An Elder Scrolls: Oblivion thead

Im getting 29fps as my lowest maxed out with the driver tweak on my 7800gt, runs fine for me as it is a rpg not a fps.

Looks sweet, plays better :D

The trolls in the painting though, hard nuts to crack!

ummmmmmmmm, I think this is one for the cuboard, when a couple of next genaration gfx cards and cpu's have past i'll pull it out and play it how it's supposed to played, pathetic seriously, we haven't had one pc game that runs well since farcry and that was like 2 years ago, and since then gfx's have hardly improved that much yet we needed systems twice the power even to get 30fps, I've ******* had enough of being taken of ride with the pc games market at the moment, to top it off the one game I was really looking forward to, UT2007, i,ve recently heard that as it stands at the moment you need quad sli just to pull 40-45 fps, what the hell is going on, I,ve been playing games on the pc for over 10 years, it's never been this bad before.

Far Cry performed no better than Oblivion on the average PC at it's time of release. The only reason Far Cry performs well now is because our machines have moved on and got more powerful. When Far Cry was released everyone was moaning about the performance. It's called progress. If we didn't have games that pushed the envelope of what our PC's can handle then there would be no reason for technology to move forward.

Also for what its worth I think the graphics in Oblivion are far superior to Far Cry's. Infinately more realistic. Not only that but when you think about what is going on under the hood in Oblivion, you realise just how much of an awesome achievement it is. Far more processing is required to keep a living breathing RPG world alive than to make a few soldiers run around.

I think Bethesda have done a simply magnificent job. I'm sure if the Xbox 360 didn't exist then we would likely have some far more PC specific optimisations and better overall performance on our PC's but I don't care. Why? Because at the end of the day it's still awesome. Oblivion is without a doubt the most immersive and most impressive game I have ever played. Nothing even comes close for me.

Look no offence mate but I disagree wholeheartedly, I'm not stupid I know how pc games have performd in the past and over the last 2 years most people will agree that pc games gfx have stagnated, yet the system requirments to play these games have quadrupled, I play farcry maxed out with HDR and it looks amazingly better than oblivion, I'd also say the same for chronicles of riddick and performance wise they both it eats it for breakfast, games developers are getting more lazzy by the day, I truely, truely, believe that if optimized properly and coded better oblivion could run at 60fps on a 3gig cpu with a 6800gt.

One complaint I have is the interface. Ok, so they had to dumb it down for the Xbox 360, but why did they keep the same interface for the PC version? It's not making full use of the PC's control method capability.

I hate it when they take a classic PC game then shift the development of the sequel primarily to consoles. It's not so much apparent in this game, it's still a good game, but it could have been a whole lot better if it was developed primarily for the PC. Or at least if the PC version was extensively improved where possible so it wasn't a direct copy of the dumbed down console version.

As for Far Cry looking better, what are you on? I will admit the quality of the graphics in Oblivion are quite variable. In places it'll look fairly good, in others absolutely stunning. Then again this was also the case with Far Cry.

In those places where Oblivion looks stunning, it totally blows away Far Cry to be perfectly honest.

i agree that the interface is far to clunky and also its really annoying that you can only view about 6 items at a time as well as it only showing part of the screen, would be nice if it took up more space on screen and if you wanted you could press a little button that would reduce its size back to normal to view your character. That said theres work on a mod at the moment in the elder scrolls forum to reduce the size of the items in the inventory so double can be viewed:

http://img138.imageshack.us/my.php?image=inven6dw.jpg

6 items instead of six

the other annoyance that is getting worked on is the spellcasting, at the moment you basically have to remember what button between 1-9 you set for each spell and when in combat having to fumble around for the right key is a big annoyance, so what they are thinking is at least a pic of each spell along the bottom of the screen or side that appears with the spell picture and the corresponding number to make it easier

the other one that is getting looked at is some kind of hotkey to hold say health potions or any description and/or magika potions or any description.

going to sound like a broken record now but..

the last annoyance is the size of the map? whats that about, its about a quarter the size of the screen, and afak there is no way to make it bigger or move about it quicker.

give it a few days and im sure we'll have little mods like this that make it better for us PC gamers

I there a similar tweak for Ati cards.

not at the moment.

that mod is for the fx cards so that more resources are shifted away from the card to the cpu as the fx cards are like the very very minimum to run this game.

Trying to find some fish in the lake for some bloke, but unable to see very well under water.

Why is this?

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT! Highlight text to see better too :)

If your a mage, cast a minor detect life spell, or if not just buy one from one of the shops, or people in the mages guild. I've also found that true to nature, when its sunny you can see better, but when its raining seeing underwater is difficult. Those fish also seem subsecptible to shock attacks.

It's tough playing as a thief/assassin. I can't really gain access to any of the major towns/cities without getting raped by masses of guards. And I'm not going to jail god damnit! :D My bounty is 3810 now

Well, I did go to jail once, just so I could break out for the fun of it :D

Does anyone know which town the Dark Brotherhood base is in? I can't remember

Is there a demo for this game? It does look impressive, but I haven't played any RPG since I was a little kid. I think I played the demo of Thief once. :D But anwho, would love to see how good this is? I've missed having games that hooked you for aaaagggeeesss! At the minute I've just been playing FPS games and NFS Most Wanted. :D

Don't want to fork out £25-£30 on a game I end up hating. Do you get to fight and kill stuff in it? :o

I'm exactly the same as you. Assasin that is. I love breaking and entering and pinching stuff from peoples houses. But i'm always worried some guard is gonna bust me XD Although im not very far yet. What are you using for your equipment? I'm wondering what assasins would use..

Turn off the self casting shadow option m8, it should fix it

Thanks for that Frost, will give it a try in a moment.

The lowest frame rate I managed to get was 9 while stood in water in a cave and holding a torch :( . A bit of overclocking on the gfx and now the lowest I've seen is 20. Gonna give it a bit more later :)

As for the HDR or AA thing IMO it depends where you are as to what looks best.
So far I think AA suits outdoors best and indoors HDR, not seeing much performance difference switching between them though.

I'm not very far either, only started this character last night.

Have you joined the Dark Brotherhood? You get given a nice set of armor upon being accepted into the guild.

There's no demo but that won't be a problem. You will like it*. And yes lots of killing stuff.

*said by a guy who hasn't even played it yet :p

only two bugs i've found so far is
a) womens voice changing (a beggar changed from young woman to old lady voice in one convo)
b) sticky keys... i held down shift for to long whilst sneaking and running after this guy i was following and it went to desktop moaning about sticky keys, and i couldn't get back into the game

runs sweet on my system

amd 4000+ @ 2.6GHz
2GB G.Skill ZX
7800GT

its not maxed out, i've got all draw distances up full, 2x anti aliasing in the game... haven't got self shaddows on though... takes a fair amount of tweaking once you get out of the sewers and into the open to get the right blend between something that looks awesome and something that plays awesome... but runs very nicely anyway :)

You need to practice your sneaking!!

If you sort yourself out with theifs guild membership you'll be able to do something about the bounty on your head.

Been playing about 4 hours, only done 2 quests but gone adventuring in 2 dungeons, I think it's fantastic :D I made a kind of cross archer/mage character :)

Also, I'm playing at 800x600 with HDR, it slows a little outside but is mostly smooth.
