An Elder Scrolls: Oblivion thead

Things are nigh on impossible to kill. I may have only just started out but 20 arrows in the head of a guard and they're all like, pay with your life! Am I doing something wrong?

Yes.... Guards = tough... don't get caught!

It's well worth killing them though :D, i was standing at a spot where they could not attack me, just kept on firing arrows and flare magic. I started to think that they were invincable, but all of a sudden he died :(, they have great silverswords and light, but powerful armor :)

Pick skills you don't use?

I was looking around the official Elderscrolls forum and a lot of people were advising that when you roll your character you should pick skills that you will not use all the time so that you level up slowly. I think the logic behind this is that your major skills govern your level so will go up high, but when you are a high level you will have poor skills as the ones you dont use.
eg

An archer will be using a bow all the time so their marksman skill will go up quickly but might neve use a blade, so you end up having a high level archer that is rubbish with a sword. Thier logic is that if you have blade as a major skill you are forced to train that up before you level so everything rises at the same rate.

Does this make sense and is it good practice? I'm trying to create a charming Gentleman thief that is handy with a bow so wanted to start off the best way.

Is there a console comand to get your ingame fps? I'd rather use this than fraps if one exists :D
I'd like to tweak my video settings to get the best eye candy/fps ratio as it can be a bit hit and miss whilst melee fighting with low fps :(

I've kind of gone a 50:50 approach... I purposely left a couple of skills I intend to make use of as minor skills.

The reasoning is if you increase a given skill 10 times before you level up you get a 5x multiplier on it's controlling attribute. Levelling a given skill 5 times gives (i think) a 3x multiplier.

So.....

Take the following scenario. Character A has Blade (strength) and Destruction (Intelligence) as Major skills.

Character B has Blade as a Major skill, but Destruction as a Minor.

Character A gains a level by increasing 5 skill levels each at Blade and Destruction. He therefore gets a 3x multiplier for strength and intelligence.

Character B on the other hand used a lot of Destruction and increases that skill by 10, and then levels up by increasing blade by 10 - when his main level goes up by 1 he will get mupliers of 5x for both strength and intelligence.

In other words, levelling up will take longer this way, but will make sure you use a wider variety of skills within each level, and increase more of them at each level, meaning higher levelling multipliers for your main attributes.

This in the long run means a more rounder and more powerful character.

At Level 10 character B would be considerable stronger and more intelligent than Character A would be at level 10.

I don't play the stats too much (only really thought about it a couple of levels ago, thankfully I regularly make use of a few of my minor skills), I don't go to the extreme of trying to get 5x multiplers all the time, but if you play with this is mind it will happen more often than someone who doesn't.

E.g., me earlier today:

Hope I made sense!

Open the console (`) and type "tdt" (without quotes) and hit enter.

Yes it does make sense. I think with the way that the world scales to match your level makes it neccesary to do this in a way, although that doesnt seem to be a very popular design from the devs.

I got my 2GB of geil RAM today and put that in. Now oblivion crashes every 5 mins like clockwork and after I re-load it I can't open any of my save games without it freezing. I need to start a new game then I can load my old saves :(

Anybody have any ideas what to do?

Why kill a gaurd for his armour when you can steal it off him while he sleeps ;) :p they are too tough, which of course they should be. Plus if you steal, you don't get a bounty on your head unless you get caught.

If you're thinking of the guy I am, he was moaning the main quest took him 27 hours of gameplay to complete.

To me that is pretty good (the game is advertised as taking around 25 hours to complete the main quest).

With most games that'd be it, however with Oblivion there are probably still a couple of hundred hours worth of stuff to occupy yourself with.

I could've completed the game in the time I've spent playing it, but I don't think that's how Oblivion should be played. I'm just taking my time and exploring, doing things at random when the mood takes me, it's the most fun way to do it IMO.

I picked up the CE edition over the weekend. Quite please with how it runs on my PC

Detected everything at Ultra high details @ 1024 x 768, but i set that to my monitors native rez of 1280 x 1024.

Played about with HDR/Bloom with 2 x AA and I'm undecided. Performance seems the same on both, so i think I'll stick with Bloom and 2 x AA

Shadow filtering is off, as well as soft shadows. View distance etc all at max

Inside it's flawless performance wise :) Outside it drops noticeably but is still very playable. Some areas look MUCH better than others, i.e. towns look great! but I've seen a couple of areas that just remind me of Star Wars Galaxies..... go figure!

I've chosen to be a Knight and after escaping the severs I made my way to the monk to deliver the emperors crystal. Got side tracked by dungeons along the way, as well as some fella's camp. His dog had a go at me.
Got a bit of a shock at one of the dungeons too. I had to leg it from a couple of Zombies but they followed me out of the place and through the forest.

Going to re start tonight and pay more attention to whats on offer to me as I make the initial choices. Being a Thief sounds like great fun, and I'll spend more time on the character creation screen this time too.

Ouch! Sounds like it's been giving you a real headache.....

Aside from my graphics card crapping out on me on the character creation screen once, I've been trouble free.

Just realized I havent even downloaded the latest nvidia drivers for the game. I'm assuming you have done that though?

Ive been thinking about my second character im gonna make even though i wont do that until ive spent a couple hundred hours with my first character.
But anyway i want her to be a necromancer in the mages guild then when shes the guild master she will join the darkbrother hood. But the thing is i dont want stealth is that an issue for joining dark brother hood

i started with a battlemage but it was fairly boring, just the usual hack and slash...i started again with a thief/assasin/archer style char, amazingly fun :D
