Oh and if anyone is interested (i can't remember if i posted it already), www.dvdpacific.com are apparently doing the Gasaraki 8 DVD box set for about £17-18 + delivery (probably about another £4-5 for the slow option), which is a great price for the set.
Although it may not be to everyones tastes.

whats it about?

seems cheap enough to order anyway... blurb sounds interesting

The flames of war explode in the Middle East as two shadow forces unleash monstrous new weapons of mass destruction! But in a world in which giant robots are real, the most dangerous weapon of all lies buried within a human mind. Yushiro, the fourth son of the mysterious and powerful Gowa family, finds himself at the center of events that will change the future of mankind forever! Nothing can prepare the human race for what is about to be unleashed in Gasaraki

^ a quick trip to an anime site and that what you get.

Its got these elements to the show, Action, Politics, idiology, Alien, mystisisam, a lot of flash backs to the past.
There are dark under tones to the story which i engoyed, for the price of £20 its well worth it. bear in mind i got it when it was being released :(
If you've seen shows like Gundum wing or Masrtion succesor Nadesico, i'd say the mecha was closer to those of Nadesico. the machines them selfs aren't huge and massive there about 3-4 meters tall? and the show does dipicets them getting damaged, which in most mecha shows you dont find (from what i can remmber)

Ok thats prob enough babbling from LC Catch ya on the flipside.

I've decided to read through this thread again and take some mental notes. I've always had a soft spot for Anime but have never made a big effort to get into it.
Outside of New Dominion Tank Police, my knowledge of Anime is pretty tiny. GITS, Akira, Patlabor, Appleseed, Blood and Venus Wars is pretty much all I've seen. Oh, and Spirited Away.
I'm going to make some mental notes, and order some stuff to broaden my horizons :)
Thanks :D

I second the responses for -

Guyver and also Cybercity Oedo 808 if you are after some Sci-fi ones.

I will be buying these if I ever find them on DVD.
Unless someone knows where they can be obtained??

Guyver i've not heard anything about

Oedo 808 was released in the US on a single DVD, but it was badly bugged (i think one audio track had echos from the other track or something), and has recently been rereleased as a fixed version, unfortunately on 3 discs as opposed to the original single disc release :(
The good news is that you can pick them up for about £6-7 each (so about £21 for all 3).

One of the things i liked about it was the relatively realistic apporach to the mecha, the way that they weren't massive, or invunerable and the way that they were designed to be easily repaired on the battlefeild/near it as quickly as possible, and mass produced (same as with most tanks etc).

I quite like Gasaraki, but must admit it is rather slow in places if you're not into the political/conspiracy side of things :)
I picked it up at rightstuf for about £30 last year in one of their sales, otherwise i'd be a tad annoyed at the price now :)

Now for another recommendation, id anyone is interested Last Exile is due to be released here starting this month.
I've been picking up the US release (the UK release was only announced about 4-6 months ago), and have to say it's been one of my favourite new anime this year.
It's about a world (possibly human colony???) where the most common form of transport is by air, and there are three main forces, two warring nation states and a group called "The guild" who seem to playing them off against each other and in charge of the most advanced technology (and determined not to loose that advantage).

The designs of the airships and weapons are rather good, sort of a mix of hightech based around 19th and early 20th century methods (things like the steam muskets).

The story follows two couriers in their unarmed "Vanship" (what looks almost like an advanced aircraft based around a 1940's design), who get caught up in the middle of the conflict.

I'm just waiting for the last disc to arrive so that i can rewatch it from beginning to end :)

Oops i forgot about this. this is one of the things i liked about the show also.

I'm a bit surprised you've not heard anything about Guyver it was really big a few years back, well i guess more than a few years lol.
Last Exile is pretty good i think it has a lot of charictor deveolpment in it. Did i mention how good fruits Basket is?
Theres so much to recommend so little space and cash :(

ah, i know about guyver :)
just not a DVD release :(

my (now) brother in law used to buy the Guyver tapes back when it was new in about 94, and I remember watching them.
Not to mention watching the live action films(s) which were pretty awful ;)

Fruits basket is definately great, although possibly not to the taste of some people, especially those who tend towards action and blood :p
I bought it unseen due to the recommendations of various people and was suprised at how much I enjoyed it (I tend towards the action/humour stuff).

Bangers, I'm afraid i've not seen/heard much about the street fighter series, other than a couple of the animated films (one i think was pretty good, the other I can't remember), live action film (urgh) and games :)

Got a large(ish) order of Anime coming from the states next week with Last Exile being the first to watch. Mainly because i've managed to get a couple of friends hooked on the series, and they want to watch it before i go on holiday.

Best Anime of the year.

Bit of an understatment, some of the best designs you will see, ever. Just a shame that they haven't done any models/figures (that i can find), although the artwork book looks good. Will have to try and pick that up.

Heads up warning. Ghost In The Shell 2:Innonence is released on R1 DVD on Dec 28th. Just ordered mine. Looks like they didn't bother with a dub in the end, it's coming up as Japanese with english subs on the sites i've tried.

shame about GITS: Innocence :(
but probably not suprising it didn't change, given the statement from dreamworks was only about 8 weeks ago :( (far too late to change the plans for this release).

I hope they rerelease it properly in the future though (although I hope they don't do a Manga and release half a dozen versions ;)).

re Last Exile, did you hear about the LE item with disc 7?
It's a set of postcards based on the R2 Japanese covers, I found a site last night with some scans of them, and they look absolutely gorgeous (i was quite happy to spot that DVDpacific had charged me shipping for two items for that order*).
I think Geneom really pulled out the stops with the release, not only did it have a very nice transfer to DVD, but a very good dub, and some great extra's.
From memory the extra's included, paper vanships (disc 5 and 5), post cards, mousemat, Alvie figure, great DVD covers** and one of the best card/chipboard boxes** i've seen).

Apparently they are releasing a 7 disk set on the same day the last disk is released and will be available for about $120 after the normal discounts.

*the postcards moved the disc from a single item shipping charge to the charge for a double disc set;)

**the metalic effect really works with the covers and box.

It's good that some companies are adding little extras for free. I didn't realise that V7 was going to have postcards included, do you have the link to the pictures?

it looks like the site i got the scans from is down at the moment :(

so here are some resized ones (33% original size, about 5% of the file size;))
I can upload the full size pics, but not at the moment or for too long, as they are about a meg each and would probably kill my bandwidth :-(
