Ant McPartlin

I understand the anger people feel towards him after all it was a stupid, illegal and selfish thing to do. Especially given that he has the means to avoid driving when drunk. Most people are 'normal drinkers' and don't understand the way alcoholism works.

Alcoholism requires dishonesty, both to oneself and to others. If he knew his mum was going to be angry or disappointed in him because he'd been drinking it makes it hard for him to admit to her that he's not in a fit state to drive. This is probably particularly true when your livelihood depends on your public image, which depends on your appearing to be sober and 'over your alcohol and drug issues' having recently come out of rehab. Society might tolerate the need to go to rehab, but it doesn't like or understand relapses. All of which puts extraordinary pressure on the alcoholic who often responds by behaving in a way they know to be wrong 'just this once'. Humans have an amazing capacity to justify their behaviour, even if they know its wrong. How many of us speed in the middle of night saying 'its quiet'? Alcoholics take this to another level.

I also think that having significant wealth is something of a double edged sword when it comes to addication. On the one hand, money does make getting help easier, removes some of the stresses that people use as an excuse to drink, etc . On the other hand to get sober a person probably needs to hit rock bottom, that's tricky with the cushion of wealth. Wealth, unless its inherited perhaps, often comes with its own stresses - wealthy people tend to have very responsible and demanding jobs.

Others have talked about mental health. I'm not sure I view alcoholism as a mental illness, though certainly lots of people with alcoholism also have mental health problems. I do think though that alcoholism presents in a very similar way to many mental health problems. Alcoholism often isolates suffers, not unlike many mental health problems. In addition alcoholics often experience stigma much like those with mental health problems making it difficult to be open and honest about their struggles and making it difficult to seek help. Like many people with mental health problems alcoholics probably need to learn a new way of approaching life and its challenges if they're to remain well. If it helps people to understand alcoholics better to view them as mentally ill then I don't see the harm I guess.

Overall I think the bloke is a criminal and needs punished for his crime but he is also a man in need of some serious help. I hope he really engages with the help on offer and ensures that this will never happen again but he ails needs to accept the consequences of his actions.

Here we go, it took ages to get the first one.

"because I'm so much better than you I haven't got a TV, anybody who watches TV is a pleb" etc etc etc

Anyway, just bought a Classic Vibe Telecaster to add to the collection of working guitars :)

I didn't say I don't have a TV, I just don't watch terrestrial broadcasts on it.

Doesn't make brain drain TV any less ****

look what we see on the telly is normally far from what a person is .. he's just shown his true self .it's the fame factor ..like the footy player spitting at another car ..
it's a crazy world and what we see is really not the truth from tv to papers .
I say let him burn and the people in the other car should just do a personal suit against him ..

The saddest thing is that he has potentially not just ended one career but two. I can imagine him feeling suicidal, let so many people down.

Just pleased he was caught in a low speed incident it could have been so much more tragic.

My god it's crazy how people react these days, he is clearly going through some mental issues at the moment, it kinda makes you not care and do stupid things sometimes, and how people react on here to someone getting in a car drunk is almost akin to being a child molester, I fully agree you should never get in a car drunk but I can assure you that you have freinds or family that have at one point in their life driven a car over the limit, it doesn't make them the devil incarnate, and I certainly don't believe being a celebrity should make things any easier for you, I actually believe it has the opposite effect, can you imagine having what primitive society beileves should make you happy and your not, and you still have to carry on playing your part pleasing and entertaining everyone, sod that.

I here you. I've pulled people out of cars a few times, different people i should add, after they've got in and tried to drive home drunk. It really doesnt make them scumbags, just idiots, any everybody is capable of being an idiot and somepoint in their lives. He's human - he deserves to be punished accordingly and he deserves the chance at least to learn from this and sort himself out, although given this happened so soon after he managed to reverse his Range in to a tree i dunno... Thank goodness at least nobody was fatally injured.

You're wrong, but carry on.

I don't doubt they're competent as presenters, but no more than anyone else I see on TV. If you kept the X-Factor in the same format but replaced their scripted pieces with another prime time presenter no one would give a **** after a couple of weeks.

fun fact; Dermot left the xfactor in 2015 to presue other projects. He was back in 2017.... Evidently, people did give a **** (*).

(*) Not me though.

Individual presenters or ones with good chemistry together can play a massive part in the success of a show.

Nobody is asking you to like them and I can understand easily why Ant & Dec would annoy some people, but they're undoubtedly fantastic at what they do.

This ^ strikes me as quite insightful. A good explanation.

I hope he can turn his life around. Its obvious he is suffering in life. Wish him all the very best.

Judging by that video and the circumstances of the crash, he’s not just a bit over the limit, he’s utterly off his face.

Unlike a lot of people, I don’t get into a frenzy about people who’ve had one pint too many but what he did was very stupid and I’m amazed his mother would even get into a car with him.

Well they don't even present X-factor, but there you go....

I used to be a bit of a "Why do people want to watch them, rubbish/mindless TV etc" person.

But actually I started watching 'I'm a celeb' in 2011 and their little skits make that whole show IMO. Haven't missed a series since then. It's only on for 3 weeks of the year though.

I don't watch Saturday Night takeaway or Britains got Talent, but as presenters they are very good and very funny.

While not wishing to mock his alleged mental issues, at his age I’d like to have been suffering the indecisions of which blinding bird to phone for a booty call, and should we “get at it” on the water bed, or the one filled with Krug champagne.

People make very bad decisions while suffering mental health issues, people make bad decisions due to alcohol, just because you didn't doesn't mean that it's not a possibility. You only have to look at suicide as a prime example of this. It's a bad decision made at a moment in life where the person is at one of the lowest points possible and chances are, if they could hold on longer they'd pass through that feeling and be thankful they didn't make it.

As for the situation with Ant, I'm not a fan of the pair and he's made a completely stupid decision for someone so in the public eye, but, that doesn't mean it's the end of anything. Look at Robert Downey Jr and his history with drugs/prison. Celebrities can and do turn their lives around.

I personally wish him all the best in his recovery and hope that he gets and stays clean, that he makes it through the bad times. No doubt once he is clean he'll be making amends with the little girl and the people involved in the accident.

Did anyone else hear Elvis, singing “Crying in the Chapel” as they were reading that, or was it just me?

The saddest thing is that he has potentially not just ended one career but two. I can imagine him feeling suicidal, let so many people down.

A twofer, can’t beat that, oh please God,
say that it’s so, pretty please with sugar on.

Please, please, please, don’t tell me that a whole slew of lemmings pleaded for his return.
It had to be just his family, right, and all on J-Wing at Broadmoor, with access to a phone?
