Ant McPartlin

When he came out of rehab for tramadol addiction (which must have been a cover up) he said great news I'm not an alcoholic! I was just drinking too much... A normal person would be looking at around 6 months prison right now. He looks absolutely bladdered standing there after the crash. Will be interesting to see if he has a job to go back to. He certainly won't be doing anymore Suzuki adverts.

Very rarely on a first offence would you be jailed, unless you had caused serious injury or death.

Licence gone and a large fine is the usual punishment for first time offenders, if you were a repeat offender then things ramp up.

People have sympathy for him because he's that cheeky chappie off the telly who makes them laugh on a Saturday night. In reality he's a 42 year old man who got in a car drunk when he had absolutely no reason to do so and could have quite easily killed somebody or maimed them for life.

I have to be honest. If i was that rich and famous, i would be chauffeur driven absolutely everywhere, why would you drive yourself?

Firstly, it's pretty hard to judge how anyone is after an accident, looks pretty bladdered... You'd probably say the same to me after I had an accident and the shock took hold while I was waiting for my wife to turn up. I've never driven a car within 12 hours of drinking.

Secondly, why would it mean the end of his career? Britain loves an underdog. Lots of celebs do stupid things and carry on, how many singers are known to do drugs/drink/fight and carry on.

Yes injury or death, but also if you are seriously over the limit.

If a case is so serious that the Court believes community service is an inadequate punishment, a custodial sentence is possible. This would normally occur for breath readings of 116 and above, blood levels of 265 and above or urine of 355 and above.

Interesting, there must be links in your local paper for Court appearances - got any?

I didnt say they were in my local area. These are work colleagues or acquaintances over the years. One was nicked twice in a week and got 6 months, yes I know he was caught twice but there were no crashes. Another hit a girl crossing the road and got I believe around 6 years. Ants crime kinda fits into the middle of these. First time caught but hit two cars and a little girl sent to hospital. I guess it's gonna depend on how much over the limit he was.

From the government website.

Driving or attempting to drive while above the legal limit or unfit through drink
You may get:

  • 6 months’ imprisonment
  • an unlimited fine
  • a driving ban for at least 1 year (3 years if convicted twice in 10 years)

Tony Adams got 4 months when he hit a wall.

Well he looked absolutely sozzled, and was then arrested for being over the limit, so your comment is redundant. I said career I should have said commercial interests, like the Suzuki adverts. Lots of famous people have lost jobs concerning cars after drunk driving offences. Vic Reeves and Churchill, Alistair Stewart Police Camera, action. You think James Cordon would still be allowed to do Carpool Karaoke if he had plowed into 2 cars whilst over the limit?

He made a terrible decision and should be punished like anyone else

Celebrity vs non celebrity don’t come into it. He chooses to be a celeb and could have caught a cab but decided to be a pleb.

The noise around those decisions ie rehab and celebrity and mental health are misleading. You can’t abdicate all responsibility as a result of any of those things. His mental health was good enough to perfom his job, he was certainly lucid enough to consider whether he should be driving a car or whether in fact he presented a danger to the public. I suspect the fact is that he made a dumb decision and is too wrapped up in image preservation to own up to it and own his mistake.

Well you've answered my question, twice in a week and hit a girl crossing the road.
Tony Adams was way over the limit if I remember correctly.
Very rarely on a first offense does anybody serve jail time unless they were way over or did something bad.

Tony was 4 times over the limit, so 4 pints maybe? Could be more I suppose, he was a professional drinker so may have had a larger tolerance. We will wait and see how much Ant drank.

I agree.

I know lots of people who have been caught drink driving.
I don't know anybody who has been to prison for drink driving alone.
Some had pretty short bans and minimal fines.

People here have absolutely no idea, you can tell the ones who have no clue on mental health and what it can do to people.
Fun fact tho, plenty of people have mental health issues and don't become alcohol or drug dependent.

I think many in here are all too aware of mental health issues. But the idea that you get more sympathy for being drug or alcohol dependent because of mental health issues is kind of insulting (to all of those who cope with mental health issues in other ways).
