Ashes thread - England vs Australia * SPOILERS *

a friend of mine is going to oz for the 4/5th test i've advised him to buy a green and yellow shirt!

one question i have to duncan fletcher is :

-at the end of the pakistan series (where panesar had bowled so well) fletcher went out and spoke to the press praising monty and calling him the best finger spinner in world cricket! now is the england team that rich in talent and got that much depth to it that we can afford to leave out the "best finger spinner" in world cricket for probably the biggest series of the year? answers on a postcard please ;)

i have been lucky to play with and against some of the guys that have played this ashes (alistair cook, monty and mike hussey) and these are 3 high class individuals i remember husesy used to come into the indoor school at the northants county ground every morning and give himself a 100 catches by throwing the ball against the wall! he is truly high class with a test average of approaching 90 this guy is quality (both mentally and physically)

Seeing the celebrations after the match showed how much it meant to Australia and they are fully deserving of the win. Enjoy it while you can though; come 2009 your game winners will be drawing a pension and the Ashes will be back where they belong :)

our current game winners might be in wheelchairs by 2009 but you don't have any reliable game winners so your point is moot.

flintoff/pieterson might have had their 15mins last summer in england but i haven't seen much of them either side of that series to be honest....our guys have been doing it for years....big difference ;)

Actually the ashes are always where they belong ;)

We seriously lacked some leadership this series, both Freddie and Fletch have let us down badly.I mean why did freddie go out all guns blazing today, when a calm measured innings was required.

after all the complaining on here abiout team selections Il say firstly that there is no doubt the aussies deserve this. They were so focused from the word go.

However, I'd say England will come back and win the next two tests. They cant stop here - they need to prove that they still are a great team.

On the team selection note Geraint Jones has to go - his wicket last night was embarassing really.

Although the series isnt fully over we can take a lot of positives - KP is just outstanding, Cook has a bright future, Strauss was just very unlucky with some dismissals, Collingwood and Bell were excellent.

Freddie out of form until last night, GoJo needs to go, The bowlers upped the ante this test and hopefully that will keep going.

Dont think Ashley Giles will ever play for England again - hope his wife is ok too.

Thats my 2c worth.

o... and to the ashes urn
"hope you have a nice break down in Aussie land...see you back in England next year!"

did you not see how he shaped up last nite? lol he couldn't put bat on ball, he's hardly in the form of his life by any means! i'm not being funny but chris read averaged 41 in the pakistan series is that not enough to warrant a place over jones in general! to be honest jones has had his day and fletcher really needs to start realising this, ther's currently a excellent keeper (probably englands best) at worcester and also a close friend of mine and played a lot of county stuff and regional stuff with him, called Steve Davies who is an excellent batsman too he should be callewd up to international!

Eh? KP has averaged 79 this series, which considering the team has played so poorly is pretty damn good imo. Granted Fred has been poor, should never have been made captain :(

Awesome performance by Australia and I'm so happy it was such a strong win.
To those talking about England trying to win the last two, as much as they may want to Australia aren't going to relax now, I want to see a 5-0 ashes result to make up for losing the last one.

ours again!

thanks lads, totally outplayed. first you made the wrong person captain, selected the wrong side and then played like you were going to lose. sad really it wasnt more competetive but theres nothing better than bringing home the ashes.

And now you will be celebrating with the small, half pint of lager, ah Aussies, real men.....

/end jealous banter.

Everyone knows Cricket in this country sucks. Not enough youth and unlike in other countries a kid is told to either bat or bowl, not try both or develop all skills. Something which can cause problems imo.
There just isnt a passion for cricket, just crappy football.
England got VERY lucky last year, something some people don't realise :D

How about also from the day dot in this country with regards to sport your told that its the taking part that counts..............

I'm not so sure on that, don't think it really matters. What matters is where kids go from the age 16+ and straight into Men's cricket - often filled with moaning old farts. There is very little guidance from coming out of the teens into early adult-hood.

I remember playing for Winchester District and EVERYONE in that team, when they hit 17, were immediately left with no-where to go apart from playing mens stuff. In my opinion youth development from cricket needs to go to 16-18, 19-21 and maybe even further. Of course this all sounds rosey, if people actually played the game.

not being funny but if you are good enough then you will be picked up, i've been lucky enough to play 11 years for Northamptonshire, 3years for the the Midlands with some now professional players! and those who did a-level sports will know of the Lombardian ethic (google if you are unsure) and i strongly agree, i play sports to win, i get the fun of playing from winning! australia play the same way, the play to win! all this buisness of the aussies influencing umpires is bs  , at a very early age i was taught that if u spot a weakness in a umpire you play on it, we wer taught to get the umpire on our side or if can influence him do so!

my 2 pennies worth

**at this level gamesmanship and sportsmanship are thrown out the window, you play to win on the pitch, and make friends after the game!

I am actually glad the Aussies won, last time England won everyone talked about it like it was the second coming or something. Praising it like no tomorrow, and it went on for Monthsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss. I usually want England to win with most other sports, but some reason the ashes makes everyman talk about the game for agesssssssssss afterwards, one of my mate actually quit his job last time to watch it ! England lost the Ashses for 20 years in a row, then win it once (I mean Korea did beat Italy, Southend did beat Man U, it happens), and they are kings. I hope the Aussies win it 5-0, so there won't be a hint of rubbish we got last time round.

cmon england did pick up another record, the shortest time to actually hold the ashes, 462 days! well done lads.

now if it is a 5-0 whitewash it will be the first time that has happened since 1920/21, back in the days of the timeless tests when draws never occured, so it would be quite an achievement.

Have to admit it was a foregone conclusion that the Ashes would be in the Aussies hands by the end of the 3rd Test and as per usual England gave it to them on a plate. Not taking anything away from the Aussies though, they have been simply awesome in all aspects of the game...seriously England take a damn good hard look at what their so called 'dad's army' have done to your team...absolutely hammered and destroyed them....3-0 up and it looks like a 5-0 whitewash and as much as it pains me to say it...England deserve a beating like that.
Warne yet again does his magic and destroyed what was left of your pride...FFS the guy is nearly 40 and you still cant seem to out play him and tbh he isnt having that great a series...almost on 700 wickets:eek:...wonder who will be his 700th...im hoping its KP wicket..that would put the icing on the cake for me. Hussey again keeps destroying the English bowling attack with his bat...the fella for me has to be man of the series with that amazing average...over 100 so far...and then you have Ponting whos playing the part of a captain with great ease compared to Flintoff...

Now onto England...dear oh dear oh dear...its plainly obvious that you guys won the Ashes last year by pure chance and luck...that much has been shown so far through this series...i dont give a damn about injured players...you get players in who can play just as well as the injured ones..simple as that. Cook other than that century he got...has been a total utter flop...what the hell is he doing playing??...get rid of him..Strauss??, i do feel for him..his dismissals apart from one or 2 have been slightly dodgy but thats cricket and the Aussies havent had things all their way...a few times Warne should have had a wicket but it wasnt given. G. Jones??...useless utterly useless with bat and gloves....couldnt help but laugh when Ponting knocked the bails off his stumps to get him out....got cream crackered there. Flintoff and Harmison have been pretty much big flops with the ball and in Flintoffs case the bat as well....although that quickfire 50 helped but again throws his wicket away with ease. Bell aka Sherminator hasnt been doing very well with the bat and what about Collingwood??...makes a double century then completely goes off the boil. Oh yeh the english fielding was been absolutely dire, those missed catches could have won you the game..

So far the only 2 players that have been outstanding is KP with his bat...made some very crucial runs...kinda ironic that England need a non english player to make anything of themselves...reminds me of Allan Lamb and that other big time flop Hick :p. The other player who should have been playing from day one is Panesar...took 8 wickets that lad and took them very well. Even Warne was asking why he didnt play in the first 2 tests??, by the time he did play it was too late. As for Fletcher??, he really needs to have his head checked...the guys a freaking fool for making England very very stupid with his team selections. One thing i cant understand is why the hell Simon Jones is picking the team when he cant even get himself fit enough to play??...what utter stupidity.

Anyways congrats to the Aussies, the Ashes belong to their rightful owners...to me they were just on a small tour around the UK lol:p. Seriously though the Aussies spanked the English arses pretty badly and sadly i cant see them winning any of the remaining 2 tests..perhaps a draw but highly doubt it tbh. The only thing i can see going for England is that most of this squad will be gone by the time the next Ashes series happens but then knowing the Aussies...its only a matter of time before they have some youngsters come up and take their place and they might be even better than this current lot...thats the scary thing...
