Assassin's Creed Odyssey

I have to say that while I am having fun with Odyssey, it kinda feels like trash. I like Kassandra, some quests are fun, but...playing it after RDR2 just makes it stand out more, where RDR2 was immersive masterpiece with world to get lost in tied with high quality western drama, Odyssey is trashy arcade kind of fun :)

It is weird that Ubi, such massive rich company just cannot compete, not with Rockstar or CD Projekt. Hell even Kingdom Come is much more interesting and ambitious.

Looks like I'm in the same boat as you... Recently played RDR2 and now on to this. I broadly agree with the sentiment, but think you are being a bit harsh. RDR2 had imo the greatest game world ever created. This might not be up to the same standard, but is still very good(though I'd like the different cities/towns to stand out more, I can barely notice any difference between most of them), and whilst RDR2 was an unrivaled cinematic experience, this has far more going on in terms of gameplay and different things to do.(look I loved RDR2, but the gameplay was average at best, and certainly nothing special)

I really believe animations make a big difference. Again RDR2 had possibly the best animations ever, ACO's animations are just not to as high a standard and makes the whole thing seem a bit unpolished.

Possibly for the same reason that Blizzard, a massive rich company, just cannot compete with Path of Exile or some lesser MMO companies. Because the larger and richer a company becomes , the more and more they start to cater to the lowest common denominator crowd. I've lost count of the number of well revered game companies who have ended up being disliked by gamers later on.

I'm hoping that RDR2 comes to PC at some point because I have a passion for the Wild West and I love AC style open world games, so I think I'd really like RDR2, hopefully it wont be too long before it surfaces on PC

BTW, I've just worked out that sinking ships does increase your bounty. I just sunk one accidentally and immediately had a bounty put on me on the nearest island. Don't know why it didn't happen before for me.

I guess I'm one of the people who can switch between games without constantly comparing and looking for something ambitious.

Odyssey is far from perfect but I had more trashy arcade fun with it than with Witcher and its mostly failed mechanics. The mere fact that I can climb everything and an interesting setting makes a difference for me. Ubi made probably the most beautiful and intriguing setting/map with Origins which was a joy to explore, they don't have to be ashamed compared to most other games.

And RDR 2''s world and animations **** on everything that came before so it's not a totally fair comparison but guess what? A lot of people don't like it for its slowness and average gameplay. I love it but I can also have fun with Odyssey without issues and accept its quirks and flaws. Completely different games.

That is the point I was making. RDR came out with probably the best animations ever. It is understandable to come to this game after playing that and find it seems unpolished in comparison, but not necessarily fair. Animations play a big part of people's impression of a game.

When I first got in to the game I'm watching the character bob up and down riding the horse looking ridiculous thinking 'I've just played 80 hours of a horse riding simulator and this just seems rubbish'. It might not be fair to compare the games like that, but it is perfectly natural to do so.

Hah yeah the horse riding is hilarious in AC. Just pure nonsensical arcade.
I just prefer games that focus on immersion. Ubi does everything against immersion, from the UI to the animations (or lack thereof) to no weight to anything etc.

I am playing Odyssey and have fun with it, I am perfectly capable of switching between games, but guess what, comparing games in the same genre is a thing and critiquing things some games do well and some badly is a normal thing to do, particularly when they come out at pretty much the same time and I play them one after the other.

Yeah, but the only thing those two have in common is that you ride a horse and explore an open world. The gameplay mechanics, pace, settings and focus are completely different. So yeah, RDR2 wins hands down as a horse riding simulator, Origins had nice horse riding but this doesn't.
However, having jumped fron Odyssey into RDR2 and switching back and forth, I didn't even think about comparing the two except from graphics. They're just too different.

Anyone else keep getting attacked by chickens? I was just walking through a town, a chicken attacked me out of nowhere. I killed it. Bounty on my head for killing an animal!

It's not the first time it's happened

Yes I've had chickens raging at me but it seems only to happen if I kill someone and the villagers join in as well. It's been a week since I played it now, things have just got in the way. Need to return to Naxos soon!

22 hours in and I barely feel like I've scratched the service. I've just made it to Athens. Really loving this game and having a case of "I'll just do one more thing" next thing I know it was 2:30am last night.

Just unlocked the second weapon slot and I've only now just started messing around with other weapon types. Wish I gave the daggers a go earlier, very satisfying. Spears are also better than I thought now I've changed the control type

Which is why I compare them from certain standpoints e.g. immersion. I remember when Ubi also made one extremely immersive game - Far Cry 2 - it had flaws (the stupid enemy respawn) but in every aspect it was focused on immersion almost to a STALKER-like degree. I wish Ubi would take that design philosophy and applied it to games like Odyssey, it would result in better games, as far as I am concerned at least.

It's a shame that this game doesn't have brutal animations like in The Witcher 3. The amount of times Alexios has chopped off heads and limbs and yet they still remain attached is very disappointing.
