Baldur's Gate 3

No preload should be fun with me and my son both downloading at the same time. Might pull rank on this one :D

One does the download, transfer to the other PC via external HDD and you're good to go on both. :)

I think there's actually an option in Steam to install using another local PC's data.

You'd both need to have that turned on.

I am going to give this a go ..despite finding Divinity 2 either way to hard on "normal" or way too easy on "easy"

Sadly I have a feeling these tyeps of games are bit like me and Souls likes. Love the setting, character building, gear, skills etc but am just totally hopeless at the gameplay.

There is. Steam -> Settings -> Downloads -> Game File Transfer over Local Network. TBH, if you both use steam and have similar games would be worth turning it on to only download updates once.

No idea how effective it is though, but if it fails could just fall back to copy over network/external HDD like @Dirk Diggler suggested

It's very decent, especially if you have an internal network speed much greater than your Internet speed (and storage able to take advantage of that speed increase).

For example, I have a 10gb internal network (althouhg only rocking around 600MB/s transfer speed), M.2 NVME or SATA SSD attached on systems, and a 1gb internet connection from Community Fibre. With the net connection, I can expect Baldur's Gate to transfer over the Internet at around 20 minutes on release day. If I split it so both machines download at the same time, that'll go up to around 40 minutes or more. But if I download onto my main rig first for 20 minutes, then install over the 10gb network instead; I can install BG3 to the other machine in a minimum of 4 minutes after that, to around 6 minutes after (at 600MB/s transfer speed). This is a difference of 10+ minutes on a 1gb internet connection. This only goes further up the slower your internet connection is.

I'm sure those 10 minutes are very important
You betcha! You can do a lot in 10 minutes, but compared to 20 more minutes at a very minimum? A steal. And that's at 1gb/s net and 10gb/s internal. Which not everyone has.

With 500mb/s? You're doubling that at the very least for a simultaneous download. So 80 minutes at the very least for two machines. Vs 50 odd minutes for downloading on one and then installing from another device (assuming you have 10gb/s internal and storage). And even then, with just a 1gb/s internal network, you're looking at 60 odd minutes to install on one then install from one machine to another. 20 minutes saved compared to installing on both.

With 72mb/s? You're reaching 4.5 hours for 1 machine installation, or 9 hours for 2 simultaneous machine installations. Vs Just a little over 4.5 hours if you then install from one machine to another with a 1gb/s internal network and storage.

Not everyone has the fast connections, so yeah. Every bit of time saved is very important.

Thanks for this, will give it a go tomorrow and see how it goes

Have you guys decided which class you will be starting with?

I really can't decide between Rogue and Sorc :(
I was originally going with a Human Monk (unarmed) with the buff body and using the Face and Hair combo that resembles Henry Cavill and name them Cav-El, but now on reading about well, a certain aspect of the game, I'm wondering if I want to go with a Human Warlock and name them Nathaniel Grey instead.

Yeah, lots of decisions to make... :)

I’m intending to play it with a friend of mine coop. Can we take in 4 characters and “create” all of them?

Our current thoughts are a wizard, cleric, fighter and thief.
