Baldur's Gate 3

Why turn based combat. Don't like it that much in a game like this. Too slow and boring.
Just a matter of taste, Xcom, Wasteland 3, Jagged Alliance, Pathfinder 1 and 2, Warhammer Rogue Trader, Fallout etc and D&D itself of course, all turn based combat, all very good BUT only very good if you like turn based. Turn based v realtime is a subjective thing, not just in CRPGs but in a few genres, some people hate stuff like the Civilization games for example because of it being turn based, some people hate things like the Europa Universalis games because they are real time. Its all a matter of taste. What one person finds slow and boring others find brilliant. I guess in the end, as they were trying to replicate D&D as much as they could and given D&D combat is turn based, it made sense.

I really enjoyed the Xcom games (original and reboots), stuff like Advance Wars, Into The Breach, Mario & Rabbids...so not averse to turn based. BG3 is just too slow for my tastes, too many things to learn, just not my bag. If the combat was a bit faster and more satisfying I'd probably stick with it.... but tbh I've been playing ME:A recently and much prefer it, good storyline and RPG mechanics, with actual fun, pacey combat.

Did you like other turn based crpgs? The likes of the Pathfinder games, Wasteland, Fallout?

I'm loving this so far and playing as a Bard which I never do.
Does anyone know if there's a way of ignoring the problem which Gale gives you? I don't intend to use him at all but also don't want things going south because I don't play along with his request (trying to keep this spoiler free).

I like turn based and enjoy stuff like this and Triangle Strategy but I could not get on with the X-Com style turn based for some reason. The cover mechanics are annoying.

Christ the combat is difficult, even on the easy setting. I spent far too long and too many attempts trying to kill the boss on the ship, instead of connecting the node. Also got severely beaten by a group I found behind a door in a ruin. I read you can sneak attack to get two turns before they get an attack... I tried hiding and throwing a fireball, but it only did 1 damage and then they ganked me! :D

Yeah the games doesn't expect you to do what you did really. If you follow the game advice you ignore the guy on the ship and don't go to the early ruin. There's easy fights if you follow the quest markers on the map

Yeh, but if you don't kill the demon, you don't get his cool (hot) sword, Everburn!

I posted an easier way to get this a page or so back, it's in a spoiler tag but have a read if you want to get the sword.

For the general adventuring stuff I'd recommend getting the party maxed out with 4 people fairly quick, that does make the combat a bit easier, more turns for you, less focus fire on your party etc.

Been a long time since I played Fallout. I just find the combat very passive and uninvolving. I like turn based games where you are making most of the decisions, this, where the dice are doing most of the work, leaves me cold.

Anyway, I'm not trying to dunk on the game, it's just not for me :)

For those finding combat difficult as I did, pick your battles :D but also scrolls/spells can be really useful when you are outgunned or outnumbered, I‘m favouring grease, fire and acid to make a moat between you and the foes.

This may be useless advice but certainly helped me!

Understandable, I was just curious whether it was BG3 specifically you werent clicking with or turn based CRPGs themselves.

I guess dice rolling is kind of essential to D&D really :D , not too long for you to wait for Starfield though so hopefully, fingers crossed, they wont muck it up !

Its decent advice, plus get everyone equipped with ranged weapons, they can swing a fight. Use the terrain around you, funnel the enemy into tight spots and then grease up or ice the ground, use as much CC as possible. Remember you can use bonus actions, so dont forget that you can heal almost every turn as well as attacking. Get height advantage where you can. Do these things and you can win even when heavily outnumbered.

You aren't meant to fight him. Its possible with certain tactics but straight up fighting him is not recommended.

There are a lot of good top 10 tips videos on YouTube. Some basic tactics are.
  1. Dip your weapon's in fire/poison/toxins before the fight.
  2. Use the environment
    • Choke points
    • Grease, then set it on fire
    • Throw a water bottle to make a puddle then electrify it with spell/magic item
    • Throw a water bottle to wash away ground fire/grease/acid etc
    • Barrels containing explosive/flammable materials
    • High ground especially for casters/range
  3. Don't horde consumables such as potions/scroll/magic arrows. Use them.
  4. Concentrate your fire on one target at a time
  5. Spells like sleep or hold can be useful to CC enemies allowing you to ignore them for a few turns whilst dealing with other enemies.
  6. Sanctuary combined with placing barrels is OP
  7. Surprise the enemy by attacking from hiding when you initiate the battle
  8. You can heal any one by throwing a healing potion NEAR them (applies to other potions). Does effect all in splash range so good for buffing the party on the cheap with a speed potion ...
  9. Some enemies are immune or resistant or vulnerable to certain types of danger. Right click and examine (mouse over press T) to check. Pick and choose your weapons/spells accordingly. So using ray of sickness to smash a door down probably wont work. Using Melf's Acid Arrow or hitting it with a maul will, assuming you are strong enough to overcome the doors inate toughness.
Here's one I just watched

A couple of other useful tips:
  • The Bless & Bane spells can make a huge different in determining how often hits will connect in combat.
  • Using the Hide action in combat can be useful for allowing a character to take a breather from being attacked - unlike regular D&D, it's very easy to move behind something and hide because the AI's vision is extremely limited.
  • Arrows of Roaring Thunder are really good for forcing enemies into hazards or off elevated positions.
  • A lot of ladders can be destroyed, allowing you to climb up somewhere and then stop enemies from following you.
