Baldur's Gate 3

You can block access to ladders by placing a barrel at their foot.
That's more useful for trapping enemies on a roof/platform. If you've already climbed up the ladder, unless you have Telekinetic or something other way to move them, it can be hard to get close enough to move a barrel to block others from following. In that situation it's much easier to break the ladder.

Sanctuary :) then teleport or sneak attack/hide etc

I'm going to watch a few videos on combat tonight as I know I'm not using everything available to me as I don't really know what I'm doing.

So it seems I can't recruit 'Karlach' because of my earlier actions. Anyway to resolve it or will I need to load a much earlier save?

I'm absolutely loving this game. I decided on a Bard (College of Lore) though I may change that to the College of Swords later on. How are you guys rolling?

I'm playing as a Half-Elf Bard (College of Swords) with Karlach, Shadowheart and Gale as my main party members.

I started as a Dwarf oathbreaker paladin but I caused a huge, epic fight at the druid enclave between the tieflings and goblins and several story characters somehow got involved when I summoned some ogres to help me fight and may have ended up dead. Oops. This left me with quests that I couldn't complete as it kept directing me to their cold, dead corpses to hand them in.

So I've started again as a drow ranger (recently read all the Drizzt books again). Running with Karlach, Gale and Shadowheart.

Playing a half drow sorcerer, with the urchin background, my head cannon is that they basically have a xmen origin story. Street kid discovers they have strange powers they don't understand :p

Currently have shadowheart, wyll and karlach. Seems a pretty solid group so far :)

Playing as a High Half Elf Sorcerer. Rest of my party is Astarion, Lae'zel and Shadowheart.

If I've just read the tool tip right Gale can wear light armour and still cast spells. So all that lovely light armour I've sold could have been used. Slightly confused AD&D player here ...

Yup, Gale is a human and all humans get light armour proficiency and as per D&D5e rules you can cast spells in armour if you have the proficiency. So yuppers, you can armour him up :)
