WHY?

DX 10 comes and thats it.

Who wants DX9 when you can buy DX10 for the same price?

Same price? £500 is not the same price. My 7600GT cost me £120 and runs every game at max settings right now. That's less then a quarter of what you'll be paying.

Fear 1600x1200 all in game settings maxed out with soft shadows enabled. Rig is X6800 @ 2.93Ghz stock atm, 4gig of GSkill 4.4.4.12 @ 400Mhz

IIRC My GX2 scored in the same range with soft shadows off. Can anyone confirm with the same cpu speed and game settings?

Soft shadows in FEAR REALLY tax the gpu. I would say 20 extra fps min so 41 would become 61 making the game run nice and smooth. We really need some Oblivion benchies...

If anyone plays games @40fps, must have slow response time or something as I can't stand frame rates under 60, as the games get way to choppy.

So an upgrade to a 8800gtx makes perfect sense for people like me:)

FEAR at 1280x1024 at max settings (soft shadows off as I can't see the difference for the performance loss).

Min is around 25, Average around 40 and max somewhere in the high 70s.

That and the £380 I saved does me quite nicely thanks.

The 8800 is for people with money to waste. For most people though the better option is to go for a cheaper card that will still play all their games at a good performance. Anyone who pays £380 bucks extra for a card that plays the game at an almost imperceptibly smoother rate is a moron plain and simple.

You forgot to say, that that's totally just your opinion.

And a misguided obnoxious one at that.

if they do a refresh there is no way they will drop to 45nm straight from 80. more like 65nm if that is even possible.

yep, not a chance. If there was the slightest chance that was true, defo wouldn't be buying an 8800GTX.

EasyRider, if I read correctly I am in the same situation as you I believe of an EVGA 7950GX2 and three screens. So the "stepup" for this card to solve the "reboot every time I play a game and forced to use a crappy PCI card for 3rd screen" problem has much appeal.

You got any idea as to what PCI-E card you will pair this with to drive your 2nd/3rd screens?

As sending the 7950GX2 away to EVGA is going to leave me "cardless" while I wait for the replacement I figured I could buy that shortly and at least have a useable PC in the interim?

Not everyone plays games at 1280x1024.

The mere fact that you come out with a post like this makes me believe that the people getting 8800's are not the morons.

Had a look in the mirror lately?

P.S nice clock on the 6300 BTW :D

300 mhz overclock on a 6300 is rockin! :p  ;)

I have a 5200 256mb that does the job just fine for my two other monitors.

They only ask for the card when your stepup is ready to ship.

So you would only be without a card for a few days.

Could not tell you how long the wait would be though even if you are on the list.

Half a grand for a graphics card is quite insane! Why do they always use this supply, demand first adopter pricing "ethos" (scam) ...?

But if I had the spare cash, I would click on the buy button faster than a Jack Rabbit. :D

Not bitter, just skint :)

Have you read this thread?

The GTS will more than likely come in at around GX2 pricing.

I dont game at the ickle res you play at.
A 7600 GT would crumble under the strain....

A 7900 GT is no good either.
Thats why I sold my 7900 GTX it was not good enough for the res I play

Get it?

Who is going for a SLi 8800 GTS? I plan to upgrade my case and PSU to make room for an SLi solution in the future, but not sure on what to get. Ideally I hope they release a refresh that consumes less power, makes less heat, and costs alittle less. :)

Watts Radeon X1950 XTX
Idle 184
Load 308

Watts GeForce 8800GTX
Idle 229
Load 321

For a card soooooooooooooooo much faster the power requirements are not that much more than a X1950 XTX.

4% more power usage but a massive boost in performance :D
