Big Bike Thread

Hi,

Currently I walk to work which takes about 20 mins, with my work I'm on my feet all day so it would be nice to cycle to work.

So thinking of getting a bike to commute, I don't want anything fancy just a budget bike probably hybrid rather than just a road bike as I may use it for grass or cycle paths etc.

Can anyone recommend a budget hybrid bike for commuting? Something with a minimal design preferably, black / grey etc, no flashy colours.

I would be cycling in the dark quite often so I have ordered a high vis jacket, but I will needs lights too.

Would appreciate if anyone can also suggest helmet, front and rear lights, and a bike lock. Cheaper the better, as long as it's good enough quality and works.

Looking to order bike and/or accessories on Amazon / online as my local bike shop is really expensive.

Thanks! :)

You'll be looking at 2nd hand for definite then at that budget.. Personally I'd saved 3 times that amount which will allow you to get somethings that's a. going to last a bit longer b. be more comfortable

Sorry but anything at £100 is going to be rubbish.

Up your budget and keep an eye out for second hand bargains. Pinkbike, local Facebook groups etc.

At £100 anything really aslong as it works.

Get something with 100mm of travel or stiff forks if you really want a mountain bike. I've seen some old rockhoppers etc go at £100, but no doubt you'll end up with some maintenance straight away. Wheel bearings, headset bearings etc.

Okay thanks. How much would I need to increase my budget by to get something decent which will last a long time and be reliable etc? Only using it to commute 20 mins each way a day.

edit: Sorry meant 5 mins each way a day (20 mins was walking time)

Get it bought (depending on how tall you are by the way, 20" frame)

That looks good! Is it a good model / brand?

I'm 5' 10" so judging by a quick google search 20" frame is the right size for me?

It's a mountain bike though. Excuse my ignorance but would it be fine for road cycling? I assume just slightly less efficient than a road bike?

However probably can't get it as I live on the south coast. Local pickup only from Manchester only. :(

Originally a £400 bike, looks in good condition with shimano hardware. Wont hurt to sign up and ask if he will box and ship it, ive dealt with plenty on there that say local pick up but will sometimes post if you ask nicely.

It'll cost around £30 to post a bike though, which is a significant percentage of the bike's value at this price point. That puts the total cost near £200, you could probably get something better locally for that price.

Something like this might be within collecting distance?
