Yeah - that's the problem and also another reason as to why going with BMW directly makes sense in this situation. I'm not paying anything, her insurer is and the difference in value between BMW and a specialist is not actually going to make a difference to my premium. It's going up regardless :(

Yeah, I'd question the amount they're charging, we all pay for it at the end of the day.

Check the work they've done carefully on pick up, as once you've signed it off you'll have to fight them to correct anything you're not happy with out their own pocket..

Honestly i still don't get the conjecture here regarding the claim, its cost, and the fact OP wants to go with the approved option. With a car that expensive and if it's still under a BMW provided warranty there's no way i'd cheap out and go for a specialist over the BMW option, especially given the fact it's immobile currently.

Are they hamming it up to get more money? Probably. But that's for her insurance to dispute, not OP. Why should he go through hoops to make things easier on her/insurance?

It's easy to say you'd go the extra mile, but he's not you so it's irrelephant.

It's not her premium I'm trying to be considerate of, it's all of ours, the entire motor insurance industry is a complete joke, premiums going up for us all the time because dealers (such as in this case) shafting everyone for repairs, charging a fortune and making a huge profit over marginal, menial things.

Main dealers see insurance claims as a blank cheques - It's why insurance companies write off cars so quickly these days, it's cheaper for them.

EDIT: BMW won't repair it themselves anyway - They'll outsource any paintwork to a contracted local shop.

Oh don't get me wrong, i want cheaper premiums too and i understand that dealers do take the mick but this thread and the one on BB have vilified OP for choosing the route he has.

The problems reside with insurers and the stealers, OP really doesn't have a lot of options in this situation that don't require him to take time out of his day to obtain a tyre, and possibly use a weakened wheel or exacerbate exiting damage just so he can go to a different specialist for a different quote.

The insurance industry is a joke, but for reasons much more complex than a dealer writing an inflated quote.

It's being repaired by BMW Williams own bodyshop, it's not an outsource job.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here. I've tried to be reasonable and consider other options, but I'm limited to what I can do without having to take even more time out of my day/weekend/life to shift things around, where I may or may not end up in an even worse situation if things don't go to plan.

I appreciate the advice from everyone here and even those on BB, I really do. But if you were in my situation I'm sure it would be a case of - path of least resistance/best job done/minimal risk in the future, unfortunately this is it in my opinion. I have a life to live, I just simply don't have the time to be bending over backwards for little reason when I'm not even the one at fault here :(

@Robi, the other benefit you will have is one year after the completion of the repair BMW will invite you back to have your car inspected to check the quality of the repair, not just on day one, but after a year of use. At least they did with mine. It’s how they ensure proper quality control.

I also found a couple of minor issues with mine a few weeks after getting the car back. One such issue was that the door handle light on the door they had repaired never illuminated the same after the corrective work (lots of blue/yellow colour separation). I went back to the body shop and explained the issue and they just ordered and fitted a replacement. Didn’t bat an eyelid.

That's reassuring to know! Thanks mate.

My insurer has already instructed BMW to carry out the work, so now it's just a matter of waiting to collect my car and for the two insurers to sort out the claim. Hopefully liability is admitted immediately and it doesn't turn into a long drawn out saga.

Apologies for the rubbish photo but picked this up yesterday.

2017 330D Touring xDrive.

On the drive home the things I love:
Feels nice
Quick in a straight line
Tech stuff is cool

Things I don't love:
Handles like a boat (xDrive)

Coming from the STI it was never going to feel as nimble.
