BMW and M Power Owners

I’m still not quite used to looking at the screen when reversing in my 428i. My previous car didn’t even have parking sensors, never mind a camera.

This is the first car I've had with a reversing camera and I rarely look at it as I'd gotten so used to parking based on the beeps in previous cars. I find the top down view quite useful in certain circumstances but you only get that with the 360 degree camera option I think (park assistant plus?) and I've never used the 'park it for me' option.

i didnt use it for the first few weeks in my 430i, but you really do get used to it. I don't use it INSTEAD of mirrors etc, but found it incredibly useful in tight spaces, or when reversing where visibility is better from the back of a car (ie out of a space). My 440i doesn't have it and i really miss it now, got a retrofit kit en route to me now as I really want it now!

I'm looking at getting a new car (second hand) and really like the look of the 4 series Grand Coupes. Would be either the 430 or 440 Msport. Is there anything I should know about these before buying?

I asked something similar recently, you may find these posts of interest:

Drive them both, the 430i is a great engine but the 440i is LOADS better. I swapped from a 430 to a 440 a few weeks ago :D

Well, the Mineral Grey LCI 430i GC with 15k miles has gone to WBAC, to make way for something QUITE different! WBAC were offering really strong money (infact, i got £200 more than my dad bought this car for at 6 months old and it's now nearly 3 years old). This was over a grand more than the dealer could get to on part ex.

I loved the 430i GC, the form factor is really fantastic, and a quick sit inside an m4 competition ruled them out (my fiancée is rather vertically challenged, and the single-piece seats in the m4 comp are completely the wrong shape to the point she can't sit even slightly normally!), so I kept my eye out for something else.

I then saw a bizarrely cheap AUC car come up that was actually below trade price for some reason, I managed to get my deposit down within a few minutes of it going on the site. All the history stacks up, and the condition is really fantastic.

So, I present - a mineral grey, LCI 440i with 15k miles. It cost me under £1200 to change, which is a ridiculous bargain, in my view, especially given the better spec and getting some more warranty too!

2018, 15k miles, I'm the second owner. M plus pack with ferric grey 704m (my 430 was orbit grey so they were darker), dynamic pack (active suspension and variable sports steering), oyster interior, harmon kardon, digital cockpit, HUD, high beam assist memory seats etc:

The engine is absolutely amazing (to me), and it is SO much quicker than the paper 0.8 to 60 difference would imply. The digital cockpit and HUD make a huge difference too, feels far more modern, and the oyster interior is really lovely. The car is in extremely good condition, too!

Next step, MPPSK to take it to >360bhp and give it a bit more of an interesting exhaust note :)

They LCI'd them in ~2017 i think, LED rear taillights are the giveaway.

The M plus/pro pack is a really good one to make sure it has, gives it the much nicer wheels, privacy glass, the big 4 pot brakes, harmon kardon etc. I think the digital cockpit is also a must, makes it feel far less dated. Good base spec with memory seats etc being standard though :)

On the 440i topic, ignoring the price which is bonkers on all of them, any idea why this doesn't seem to be selling?

https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/202102269499519

Having been watching them for a while, this seems to be missing barely any options (and even then, generally only stuff i'd not want anyway like rear seat heating, keyless entry) but judging by the AutoTrader advert ID and the 'Previously Seen Adverts' check on TotalCarCheck, it seems to have been for sale since late February?

Edit - says Finance not available (not sure I remember it saying that before) but guess that's a big part of why - what would prevent that being on offer? If it were a random trade car i'd assume only part history or something but as an AUC car, it must surely be all up to speed in that respect?

Edit 2 - seems to depend which link I open it with as to whether it shows finance options so that might be a bit of a red herring :p

Because it's 30 thousand quid and 3.5 years old.

But so are the rest of them that have no options except M Sport Plus and they generally seem to eventually shuffle off and sell within a month or two. (i mean not specifically but they're all strongly priced, nowhere near new and plenty have 40k+ on them)

I can't see what's different about this one that would leave them stuck with it for 6 months.

There was one at an independent dealership near me, up for £29,750 with a few options - they didn't entertain any money off and it was gone within a week - people are buying these cars at daft money.... but not this one?

it doesn't have the M plus pack which is a factor at least aesthetically...4/5 LCI GCs do, so it has the less-nice wheels. However, they've specced everything else from that pack at a glance (it lists the m brakes as an additional extra and they certainly look like the 370mms, but it's hard to tell as there's also a 345mm m sport brake that BMW don't differentiate between on the listings). it has the variable sports steering and adaptive suspension which i think make a huge difference to how it drives.

spec is rather good, and that is reasonably priced (in the current market) for the spec.

looking through the photos a second time it looks in pretty poor condition actually:

PO9PQRw.jpeg

maybe that's why? That might be dirt rather than a scratch but a bit poor for an AUC car to have that much dirt in the photos....

Yep you can see in BMW used cars there’s a date on there too - this one says 2021 02 26

Someone actually specced active cruise on a BMW

There must be something wrong with it if it’s the same price as everything else but not selling. Maybe the previous owner smoked a pack a day in the car or something similar that you can’t see in photos but would notice if you saw it in person.

Finally took the plunge and decided on hybrid turbos for the E92 335i. The stockers just dont seem to be upto the job anymore had 2x new seals and cores and there still leaking oil and cars is smoking. Also had to grab a giant intercooler, stage 2 fuel pump and few other bits and bobs. Should be well over 500HP which should be a bit mental lol. Just need to decide on the American to tune it hah. Also having a wheel colour change and new rear tyres fitted this week.

Anyone got thoughts on runflats vs non runflats on a 3 series touring?

Strange situation where I have 2 non-rft fronts and 2 rft rears - both sets pretty new. But as I’m planning to put the 403M wheels back on I thought I might get them coordinated at least. As a family car it’s probably safer to put runflats on the front right? Even if it’s a little less comfortable… or is the difference in ride massive?

Runflats are crap, are hella expensive and they put so much stress on your wheels when you hit potholes etc.

AFAIK only Tourings and the X-series cars have it by default. Maybe the weird 2 series Active Tourer has it by default as well. All other BMWs have it as an option...
I see, so the through load adds the centre seat long length thing but the seats still fold down without?

But so are the rest of them

So don't buy one then. You'll regret it in 2 years time when prices are sensible again and you realised you dropped 30 grand on a 2011-model 3 Series hatchback that wasn't even that new when you bought it.

You can get a G20 330i for £30k - yes yes it's 2 cylinders down but the fact it's about 100 times better in every other way and is actually current more than makes up for it IMO.

Unless you manage to pull an rg-tom and find the one 440i where the dealer hasn't priced it at a million quid these make less than no sense as a purchase right now. I think the time at which an F generation car that wasn't M Powered was worth spending £30k on has long gone.
