I would quite happily live with sub-par Mercedes build quality than drive anything from BMW's new designs.

If you'd have asked me if I'd ever own a G80 M3 when they first came out, I'd have laughed at you. The design has grown on me a lot. But I don't think that will be the case with a lot of their other recent designs, they're far too out there and weird

Yeah the noise is something I will always miss, so good. In that department BMW will never come close to the AMG cars I've had.

I don't want to sound like I'm dumping on Merc too hard, I've thoroughly enjoyed my 6 years of AMG ownership, the ownership experience has been amazing. And I'll likely go back, just wouldn't get a C Class again. But the drop in build quality over those three cars has been alarming.

The plan was to buy a new shape AMG GT in a year or two, and I may still do that, but it sounds like the build quality isn't C Class specific so will be interesting to see once reviews come out and I've had a test drive or two.
It'll come across bias but my E Class is bullet proof. The only rattle I have is the god damn child seat --- it was the only non functional requirement I didn't think needed mentioning. My god that thing is going on the bonfire as soon as this kid is big enough.

I like the M3 and M4. Everything after that is awful. I recently spent some time in Hong Kong and the i5 blends in so well on the roads there in amongst all the other vomit inducing Chinese brand cars.

And there is the reason they are doing it :)
The legacy markets (UK, Germany etc) are simply so small vs China, HK, India etc

Any F series owners had sticky handbrakes?
When driving off there is a loud squealing. Dealer temporarily rectified this at the 5th visit(!!) with new brake shoes, however issue has returned.

I am loathe to visit again and have to pay the £250 excess just for them to not fix it again.
I had it when I first bought the car, but it was fixed under warranty and never returned.

Would you have to pay the excess again if it’s due to a fault they’ve not rectified?

So if you have something repaired under warranty, warranty expires next day and the issue hasn’t been resolved, you’d have to pay?

Correct, unless the manufacturer decides to offer a contribution for goodwill but this is less common after a used warranty and more often after new car warranty and entirely up to them.

Obviously it might work differently if the issue was never resolved in the first place but if the problem went away and returned it gets more complicated

It'll depend if you can get the dealer to agree the issue was never resolved in the first place.

Surely they guarantee the work they do as well as the parts in MrRockliffes example even if it’s out of warranty.

If someone didn’t have a warranty and paid to get their car fixed but subsequently found that the fault wasn’t fixed and the issue was still there, I would expect them to put it right at their expense. That the car was fixed under warranty and the following day the warranty ran out shouldnt change the situation and should be the same as a paying customer

Work done under warranty is guaranteed until the end of the warranty if you have not paid anything towards it.

None of this affects your statutory rights, obviously.

Wow, wasn’t aware of this. Is there a difference if it switches from a new car warranty to the extended warranty? I presume it’s because the rate the dealer gets for warranty work is less than a customer paying for a fix out of their own pocket

I'm thinking of changing into a 540...
Need more space va the 440i.

I'd likely trade the 440i in... hmm

After a year of owning my E46 M3, I booked the car into Kiss Motor Works in Bristol for the RACP reinforcement. They had the car for around 6 weeks and ended up doing a full underside restoration, including all hardware powder coated and every nut and bolt zinc coated. All 4 arches had the rot cut out of them, with new genuine inner wings welded into place. If anyone is interested I could do a full write up, but the photo below shows the finished result, which I am extremely happy with.

If anyone in the Bristol area is looking for a top class BMW specialist - I highly recommend Kiss Motor Works.
