BMW and M Power Owners

Of course but it won't feel like a 55k car inside. I think Housey had it summed up well when he said how they now feel just too close a Porsche price wise.

An M135i is half the price. Is it only half the car?

Take a monster spec 335d xDrive and its about 23K less than the M3 once you've put the DCT box and a couple of other things like the parking pack on it, assuming that you can get bugger all discount on the M3. Again M3 is not quite the same but still thats a heck of a price difference.

A M135 in the same options spec as the M3 isn't 50% of the price - Closer to 75% (comparing RRP's on both)

This is assuming you want the options, most people have no interest in thing like park assist so the fact the M3 has it isn't 'worth' what it would otherwise cost.

For sure, but, in response to your original question "is it half the car". Well yes it is, given that a standard m135 has half the spec of an M3.

We all know power (bhp) is only part of the ownership experience.

I appreciate I am chronically dull but I honestly think I would rather have the 335 and the 20k.

To be honest for 90% of the time I'd rather have the 335d as well as it's a very usable car with way it delivers power and the AWD. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see the engine out the 550d in a 3 series as it'd be very close to the m3 in performance terms, although not in handling obviously...

I thought I'd ask here rather than start a new thread:

I'm in the market for a 335i coupe and have been having a look around at what's available. My 'must haves' are:

Black/Dark Grey
DCT
2nd Gen iDrive (which I believe would be a facelift model onwards)
Red/Cream/Ivory/Black leather
19" 225's
PDC Front & Rear, or just rear.
Heated seats
Folding mirrors

I've found late 2008 (Nov) ticking these boxes for £17,750 privately and a late 2009 AUC up for £18,995, which also has comfort acces, extended interior lighting & storage, BMW Assist and a few other options. Both on 36k miles.

Do these seem reasonably priced? I have made contact and enquired on both but have not reach the stage of negotiation yet. I am conscious that they are 5/6 year old cars and that my requirements for a high specification narrow my market significantly.

I would be buying the fully comprehensive warranty for any private sale and also having a vehicle inspection carried out by the RAC/AA (if forum opinion points to it being worth while) so have factored this in.

Would it be worth while to wait until the March registration? If this would have any effect at all?

Any thoughts & advice would be welcome :)

BMW Assist is likely to be not working as you require a subscription to use it after year 3. Check it on a test drive by going into BMW Online and trying to do a google search - it won't work if the subscription has run out. I have voice control and it's just awful. Maybe it's just my voice.

Good point, thanks.

I had voice control on an e90 330D a few years ago and it had room for 'refinement' shall we say :p

Any thoughts on the prices of the examples I've seen?

I still cant beleive how much these cars still cost, personally I would never be happy to spend £18,000 and end up with a 6 year old E92 but... I guess if you really want one and thats what they cost...

The facelift was not until March 2010, the better iDrive is fitted to all cars built since September 2008. It co-incided with the saloon and touring facelift not the coupe.

Of the two you've posted the AUC seems like the better deal - only £1k more yet a year newer and it includes the warranty (Which you'd buy yourself on the private car, the BMW policy is around £600 a year). Don't forget you can haggle hard on these, I got £2000 off a 2.5 year old 335i 3 years ago - it was £20k in the end which makes these seem even more expensive.

Even back then I was left with a feeling that it didn't really feel like it was worth £20k, so I can only imagine how that is now they are twice as old.

Thanks for the reply.

I found a recent thread here where you mentioned the residual value on them being almost baffling.

I see, so the AUC example isn't a Facelift(LCI?) version but has the 2nd Gen iDrive, which is one of my requirements. Would I be right in presuming the Facelift models have the different bonnet shape/shallow scoop, amongst other external/interior differences.

Ta, interesting. If you don't mind me asking how did you go about haggling such a large discount? Simply a case of being stubborn, stating your budget and holding your ground? Or a case of playing games, letting the dealer chase you and justifying driving the price down?

My purchase would be straight cash, which I would hope gives me an advantage. I have been in contact a few times with the dealer & expressed an interest and mentioned I have other examples to consider for considerably less. I don't think I have come across as keen, at least I hope not, more just curious & serious. The car's in Dundee and I'm in Buckinghamshire, so it'd be a long and hopefully enjoyable drive back and I *could* justify the distance and kill to birds with one stone and visit friends in Edinburgh.

Quite. It's insane - I'd have kept mine had I known. I can only imagine there will be a huge correction at some point and they'll all shed massive value, they cant be worth near £20k for ever especially as the 4 Series becomes more common.

Correct, mine was like that too.

No, they only changed the lights on the Coupe at facelift. The saloon got different bonnet etc.

Bit of both, the market for these isn't exactly huge.

True, it'll be an awful lot of car for a potentially reasonable amount of money, depending on how big the correction.

I'm in no real rush, there is nothing wrong with my current car and it is more of a want than need.

I'll stand firm, see if they can remove the abomination spoiler and come down 8-10%. If I could string it out to the end of the following month he may be more open to movement if he has targets to achieve.

Thanks.

Whilst I appreciate that it isn't the same sort of car and isn't an alternative you can almost buy a well specified 6 cylinder F10 - even the odd 535i pops up - for the sort of money these last gen, reasonably old cars still command. Thats a current gen, bigger and more modern car thats half the age. That really highlights how odd the pricing is on these still.
