BMW and M Power Owners

Not really the same sgement is it? Its essentially another step from the 3 saloon to the 3GT then to the X4.

Slightly less boot space than the X3 currently offers, same dull interior with questionable material selection and a pretty crummy rear seat comfort. The centre squab even places it more of a 4+1 than a geniuine 5 seater in my opinion.

I don't know what segment the GTs, X4 and X6 are meant to be in

I can't seem to find a good 991 without paying silly money so I have been thinking about a Z4 35i, BMW are offering a brand new 35is for £32k however I would rather buy used as I will only keep it 6 to 10 months.

Really? That seems like an exceptionally good price.

No one knows the GTs but the X is BMWS SUV range against the Audi Qs.

3 Series is a C/D segment exec saloon, against A4 and C Class.

Think of an Audi A4 to a Q5 (X3 competitor), then sporty it up (the Audi Q4 will do the same)

Saw an E46 M3 this morning, seem to be everywhere.

I miss my E46 so much, it did break a lot but once everything was sorted it was such a lovely place to be... and had enough power to satisfy me... this truck does not.

Just dropped my car off to get the Chassis Error sorted and been leant this as they messed up the booking..

What have I always said about E9x interiors?

Gone are the E46 days of the 3 series.

lol, I still have absolutely no idea why people talk about the E46 3 Series interior as if it's some kind of Bentley, compared to the E9x. To clear up, it most certainly is not.

My E92 interior was a much nicer place to be with everything feeling sturdier and more solid. Both of my E46's (which were/are in very good condition interior wise) and other peoples E46's i've been in have not been bad places to be by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly aren't the last word when it comes to interiors, and certainly don't justify the "OMG GONE ARE THE DAYS OF THE E46 INTERIORS" comments.

I am not an interior whiner, but the centre console is rubbish in the E46, from the squeaky/rattling armrest to the cheap slide back cubby hole. There's also the rattling from the HK sub if you turn the bass up too much and the steering wheel is so shiny i'm worried magpies might try and take it. Oh, and the glovebox feels cheap. So does the cubby hole by the drivers knee.

The only thing that annoyed me about my E92 and my mums E9x is that the sunvisors are made out of the cheapest material known to man (although it's not exactly good in the E46 either) and there was a rattle from my rear cubby hole slider, which was caused by the Milltek exhaust, so that doesn't really count.

Compared to the E46 though the E90/92 interiors are not as solid. Depending on your own preference of course... I find the E9x to be hollow and too lightweight all over. The leather wears quicker, the steering will go shiny as well and cubby holes and bits also rattle after some years of daily service. I don't know why you pinpointed those items in general really :p

Truth is the E46 feels like a more solid cabin. Things are heavier more sturdy and the plastics are thicker.

Yes the styling and design of E9x in some areas might be more modern/nicer but that's preferential again.

Nobody is calling it the Bentley of interiors (again, don't know why you stated this either). It certainly has faults, nobody is denying that but given how old it is, the faults are fewer than the newer model in general.

My preference is for solid interiors, which is why i prefer the E92. I've owned a E46 for around 2.5 years and an E92 for 2.5 years, with a month or so where i owned both at the same time. My mum has also owned an E90 LCI for around 3.5 years, so I have spent a considerable amount of time in both environments.

No it doesnt?

the steering will go shiny as well and cubby holes and bits also rattle after some years of daily service.

Again, my E92 didn't have anywhere near a shiny steering wheel at 65k miles, but both my E46 at 50k miles and my new E46 at 110k miles had/have very shiny steering wheels.

I don't know why you pinpointed those items in general really :p

I pinpointed the weak spots of both interiors. Those are the weak spots.

Truth is the E46 feels like a more solid cabin. Things are heavier more sturdy and the plastics are thicker.

Having taken apart both E46 and E92 interiors more times that i care to remember, this again is just not true. Both are comparable, but i much preferred the softer plastics of the lower half of the E92 interior.

I was being facetious to make a point, because there seems to be trend of people talking about the E46 interior as if it was designed by God himself.

To put into context, a family member recently bought a 2007 330D, it has ~60,000 miles. It has a shiny steering wheel. The seats feel great but don't look like they're from 2007 in various areas. The glovebox isn't anything special, just like the E46. The centre console area creaks when pressed around various plastic areas surrounding the buttons. The kickplates are thin scratchy scratchy plastic, they are not so on the E46, same goes for the plastic trim around that frame area. It's clean though and looks smarter than the average E46... The doors are light and don't have that meaty clunk.

Like I said, all user preference. Both have issues, the newer model shows those issues sooner in its life and to me the older one is just more solid, niggling issues withstanding.

Omission of additional lettering, outer - it doesn't have the model designation deletion so assuming it's not that?
Accent strips, korall-rot matt
Area-Code 2 for DVD
BMW TeleServices
Control, Teleservices
Dummy-SALAPA
Telematics access request,country-spec.

They are a combination of car items and job items I think

Area 2 code for DVD = Setting the DVD player to Euro region
BMW TeleServices = This is the remote machine to machine link system between BMW HQ and your car. Really cool stuff but more back end then front, allows for services to be layered on top of a single connection.
Telematics AR - Might be set country code and inform the teleservices system which country the car starts in. This is required so for example, pressing the distress button uses the BMW auto connect system to e999 in the UK which uses a special BMW-e999 interface rather than just dialing 112. It changes when you change country don't worry :)
Dummy is a dummy code for future use if required.

2014-08-07%2009.15.49.jpg

So having borrowed that earlier today I've just returned it and have a few thoughts on the 50 odd miles I did. For info it was a 640D M Sport with a few options giving it a list of 74K...

  • Its big...or more to the point long, feels longer than my XF, but doesn't seem to have the same amount of space inside or in the boot.
  • The steering wheel is identical to that in my M235i, the iDrive is the new version in my car, so has the updated controller, which I prefer. It has the bigger display, but other than being bigger it adds nothing to the idrive experience
  • The dash being covered in leather...well its leather not plastic...it certainly didn't feel as good as the XF dash.
  • The seats in my car are more comfortable and more supportive
  • The standard speakers are ok, but not a patch on the Harmon Kardon setup in mine
  • The plastics of the lower dash area and on the doors are the same in both cars, some of the switch gear in the 6 is of a marginally higher quality, but the stalks for instance are identical.
  • The ride in my car is better controlled and more compliant than the 640, probably as I have the adaptive setup and none run flats. The XF had significantly better setup than the 640d.
  • Power delivery was very good and it was pretty quick with the 8 speed box doing its usual brilliant job, economy not a million miles away from what I get out of mine.

All in all I quite liked it not sure I'd like one though, its just a bit "bland"

Interesting views on the 640D GC.
Discounts are significant; I think list is £67k but it's not hard to find them for £47k new, so £20k off.
