BMW and M Power Owners

If i do end up buying the 07 325i coupe with Idrive, I'm assuming that the navigation maps etc will need updating?! How do I go about this and is it expensive?

Do you know how much it costs to update it? Is it just a back end update or visual? Would you say it's worth it?

Dealers used to charge about £189 to update the car software. I don't think you can *just* have the iDrive software done - but take that with a pinch of salt.

AFAIK the car is plugged in , and updates the integration level to whatever is the latest one. Obviously, with every new integration level, there isn't an update for every single module. The system works out what modules need what updates then upgrades the modules that have updates waiting. This can take many hours to do - often overnight, depending on how out of date the car is.

It is also risky because the update can fail, modules can be blown which then of course can get expensive - as you have to pay to replace the modules. The best way of doing it is waiting for the car to need a new injector/fuel pump or something and as part of the repair, the car must be updated to a minimum integration level for the new parts that go in. The dealer then has to update the car as part of the repair (hopefully under warranty) - which also means if any modules blow up, the dealer/warranty will be responsible for the cost of replacing them.

Hmm seems quite the chore if it went wrong. I'll think I'll stick to just updating the maps unless the firmware update changes so much?

Very interesting, thanks Fox - I can't find a sales brochure to see what some of the features are but I'd read that the M Audio system came as an optional upgrade - but as you mentioned, I've not yet seen a car mention it being equipped.

I have seen one or two mention DSP, is this a comparable thing or is it just a slight upgrade over the stock system?

Thanks for your help.
DSP is a huge improvement over the stock system. My dad spec'd it in one of his E39s and I was very impressed with it at the time.
Granted, it's 10 years ago but it was good. Subwoofer under the rear parcel shelf and an EQ to fiddle with if you had the 16:9 screen.

Black Grills / White halos / private plate finally on after the whole cloning incident I posted about a few weeks back.

Yes it's an X6. Yes it has black grills now. It's what I wanted mmmmmkaaayyyy....

Looks like you should be involved in a very specific area of pharmaceutical trading directly to the community.

because I have a bmw?
because I have a private plate?
because I have a black car?
because I have a 4x4?
because I just fitted black grills to it?

or the combination of all of the above? :p lol.

also I think a silver skoda octavia or superb are the likely best vehicles for such activity when you think about it.

I don't get this love everyone has for black grilles? I think they look *ok* on cars that aren't black, but don't really like them on black cars. The same as I don't get why people with black cars want black wheels, blacked out windows, black sprayed badges, black grilles etc etc etc.

Contrast is what makes something interesting to look at. Black is pretty much the worst colour as you can't see any of the lines of the car, so making all of the car black just makes it worse!

'Engine Fault! Reduced power' (Full engine power no longer available, possible to continue journey, drive moderately etc) appeared yesterday after a 40 minute motorway journey and 10 minutes of town driving, 2 minutes before I arrived home. I was pulling away from lights at the time.

The message had disappeared this morning. I've been suspicious that the fuel pump has been failing as turnover has become steadily more sluggish with several cranks required the last month or two but never failed to start.

Despite the message having disappeared will this have thrown a permanent code for a garage to read? I don't fancy booking it in for a warranty claim to be told it's fine,

Thanks.
