Boeing 777 shot down

If a warning was issued before flight, which we are led to believe it was, then the risk had already been identified. So the fact that a 3rd party thought it was enough of an issue to raise it, suggests it should have been considered.

According to the BBC yesterday, the no fly zone was only up to 31,000ft. Anything flying over this altitude (as MH17 was) should have been fine....

Seems like Russia are'nt doing themselves any favours.

The Buk surface-to-air missile system that pro-Russian separatists allegedly used to shoot down the Malaysian plane has been sneaked into Russia overnight, Anton Herashchenko, adviser to the Ukrainian interior minister, says on Facebook. (BBC Monitoring)

which leads on to this whole debate being a 'out of the frying pan into the fire' type of thing

Everything will now depend upon obtaining accurate and verifiable data on the aircraft's last moments and on what brought it down.

If it does turn out that the Boeing 777 was shot down by the separatists - with weaponry supplied by Moscow - then it could significantly alter the terms of the whole debate surrounding the Ukraine crisis.

Now confirmed that 298 people were on board, up from 295 because 3 of the passengers were babies who don't have their own ticket. 3 babies :(

BBC news saying that around ~100 world experts on AIDS were enroute to a conference in Australia :(

I despair :( why the hell are human beings so fond of killing their own species? For no reason at all?!

R.I.P. to all of them, surely in a better place.

Isn't that a little unfair considering that it was supplied by Moscow to Ukraine 30 something years ago and they are the ones who lost control of it to rebels?

RIP all involved.

Someone needs to take responsibility

This is Russia and Ukraine you're talking about, they'll blame each other until something significant appears and then responsibility will be taken. I'm not saying the downing of this plane isnt significant, but concrete evidence which identifies those responsible.

I agree, but you've seen the history between these 2 countries, nothing is forgotten.

Ugh this is going to be a tumultuous time for the world. This has been a bad week for world events. :(

A friend of mine who works in the ATC and has been in the Army told me that Passenger planes are "lit up like a Christmas tree" so even at 10k it would be identifiable if using a SAM.

So it was either a mistake, which to operate a SAM is hard to believe as they're quite technical pieces of kit. Or, it was done on purpose, which is frightening. Or it wasn't a missile.

I wonder how much will be covered up and how much information will be released.

Chances are the speculation will continue and the wrong culprit(s) may be blamed but investigations should continue until concrete evidence is found

Well there is an audio recording of Pro-Russians acknowledging they've shot down a civilian plane - pretty clear I think!

Well previous incident involving the former Soviet Union have been a case of denial followed by months of investigating then responsibility being taken and an apology being released.

Yeah i think it's almost certain at this point that it was the Pre-Russians that shot it down, I suspect they will continue to deny it though. The question now is where did they get the BUK from that brought it down? Was it originally owned by Ukraine and they managed to get a hold of it, or was it supplied by Russia directly?

And when was this recording made?

Are those men actually pro-russian?

Did they have a gun to their heads?

I think its on the first few pages of this thread. It was uploaded to YT with a translation and other websites had it with a transcript. It was reportedly an intercepted communications between Russians and Pro-Russians by Ukraine.

Pictures have emerged showing a convoy of pro-Russian militants allegedly transporting the Buk surface-to-air system to the location from which it supposedly shot down the Malaysian airliner. They have been circulated by pro-Ukrainian journalist Dmytro Tymchuk, an authoritative military reporter in Ukraine, according to BBC Monitoring

I'm not arguing with you, I just mean that in this situation I wouldn't put it past Ukraine or Russia
