Boeing 777 shot down

This is the BBC video that was deleted, this version has English subtitles (I had no idea the BBC has a foreign language version!). If we can trust the BBC's sources then the locals claim to have seen jets flying alongside MH17 but none of them saw a BUK. BBC claim to have taken the video down for editorial reasons, wonder if they will ever put the "finished" version back up.

The BBC runs/owns BBC Worldwide which does news and general TV channels in other countries (the money those channels make tends to get invested in more UK programming), and now not only runs but funds the World Service.

IIRC the various different parts of the BBC can call upon the services of other parts for additional resources or news gathering/presentation from that area (but I'd guess they bill each other for it).

It's worth noting that editorial reasons can be almost anything, including if the only witnesses have serious questions of reliability, or there is a better version of the same information/video available (IE they might pull a version sent as low quality for instant use, if/when they get a version that is more suitable for broadcast use).
They also often end up with different edits of the same bit, where things might be added or removed depending on what works best in the available run time.

Interesting report on C4 news just now about rumours that Vladimir Putin's daughter has been hounded out of her luxury flat in the Netherlands. Where does she go? Why the Russian gated ghettos of Weybridge in Surrey of course at get this - what's rumoured to be Putin's family home, the journo tried but couldn't confirm this.

For all his tough talk on Russia, the PM looks pretty pathetic if enemy number one owns a mansion in St George's Hill and a) we don't know about it and b) we don't do anything about it.

I'm not sure what we should do about that really - I don't think allowing Russians to live here etc.. is quite the same as say selling aircraft carriers to them. If we are to increase sanctions/seize assets then we certainly do have our share of Russian billionaires... though I'm not sure how fair it is to do so to people who merely have a connection to Putin - I'm also not sure that doing anything with Putin's personal assets is constructive.

Not sure if it's already been asked, but why have some of the passports been hole punched and others have triangles cut out (like they do when they're out of date)?

They are out of date, think I read somewhere that people will carry around expired passports because sometimes they have valid visas in them.

Correct! I flew back from the UK on Friday and had to take my expired passport with me as I only got my new one a few days before our trip.

Well I think the first thing we need to do is make sure we can find out who owns what. If a journalist wanted to find out who owned my house they'd be able to do so because my name is listed in the Land Registry, why should that be any different for a multi-million pound mansion?

It's also worth noting that at this point no sanctions have been placed on Mr Putin, only people around him.

If he does indeed hold any property in the UK (or anywhere else for that matter) it will be held through an offshore company or trust structure so that it is virtually impossible to find out the identity of the real owner.

Putting sanctions on the leader of a country is not helpful as it would mean you'll have to travel to his country for any reconciliation talks ;)

because companies can own property too...

we do know who owns any property in the UK - the person who owns a particular property is on the land register, if that person is a company then perhaps it doesn't tell you what you wanted to know

That needs to change then doesn't it? There are probably very good reasons why companies own property but we should know who own those companies i.e. don't allow secretive offshore trusts to own property. We need to stop pandering to the super-rich tax avoiders (like Putin).

short of getting other countries to change their laws or banning foreign investment in the UK there isn't much we can do to change it

It's just ludicrous to think someone would go to all that effort to make that web site and fully believe in what they are saying isn't it? Assuming they aren't just doing it for the lols and to see how many people believe it.

If it was a false flag op then I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have had it shot down over somewhere where it cannot be 100% proven that the party they wanted to frame actually did it.

Dutch and Australian forces are going to move in to secure the area by the looks of it. Wouldn't surprise me if UK was going to deploy forces too.

Pretty sure they said on Friday it was Australian, Dutch and UK. May have changed however!

edit - mistaken:

nternational special forces are preparing to go to the Ukraine, perhaps as early as this weekend.

A detachment of Australian SAS has arrived in the UK within the past 24 hours, Sky News has learned.

If authorised, they will help secure the crash site of MH17 in eastern Ukraine along with international partners.

They are currently working with British and Dutch special forces - all three nations lost citizens in the disaster.

However, the Ministry of Defence has not confirmed whether British soldiers will be part of the deployment.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Thursday he would send around 50 federal police officers to help form an unarmed multi-national protection force with the aim of providing safe passage to the scene for independent investigators.

In the background, the special forces soldiers would provide armed protection but only if needed.

The area, under the control of various pro-Russian separatist groups, remains highly volatile.

The soldiers will only be authorised to fire their weapons if shot at first.

A separate detachment of Special Forces troops will remain in Eindhoven, on an hour's notice to deploy in the event of a major incident.

While sanctions are one thing, unless we (or they) formerly declare war or are directly and criminally linked to an atrocity I don't think going after their assets or the assets of those linked to them in this country is at all right personally.
