Bought a phone off eBay: would you say this is in "excellent condition"?

Can you confirm that ebay did suggest to him that he offers a partial refund?

It's an option rather than any kind of suggestion.

I would not be accepting any kind of partial refund with that phone.

Normally I'd say a buyer is naive for thinking that such an old phone would be in 'perfect' condition, but that listing definitely plays on the fact it was an RMA replacement from Google.

A screen cracks when there are minute, almost non-visible scores in the glass. This has plenty of very obvious issue on the front. How will you feel if it cracks beyond use next week?

I would ask the partial refund would need to match a screen replacement at the least.

eBay might suggest partial refund, they've not heard your side of things.

How does he explain the front to be any other than damaged, but not declared in the advert?

The seller has replied:

What should I do?

Decide if you want to keep the phone! Do the marks look so bad when the screen is displaying something? Marks look worse against a black background, when the screen is off.

If you decide to keep - do the partial refund thing.

If you decide not to keep - tell seller what you want :p

Later on, clean your teeth before going to bed.

I would probably return the phone for a full refund. But make sure you send the phone by special delivery and keep the receipt.

I've told the seller the following:

That will not be sufficient in this case. I believe you have misrepresented the item rather significantly and so I will be requesting a full refund. I am happy to return the item to you.

The deep scratches show when the screen is on and it drives me crazy. They're actually some of the deepest scratches I've seen in a touchscreen for quite some time.

you could be like the chump poster that bought a laptop, got a £50 partial refund and still left negative feedback. haha

if he had a negative experience then negative feedback is warranted - if a seller wants positive feedback they need to ship an item on time, as described - if they've mislead you and you have to faff about returning the item or arranging a discount then negative feedback is warranted

but really, why not just put it in a case? who cares about a scratch if the price was good. the phone will be worthless in a year or 2.

price was based on it being in 'excellent' condition - it isn't

that is reasonable - seller should have no issue selling the phone again if the scratches are only a minor thing - next time he might consider being a bit more honest about it and taking pics of the front too/not describing it as 'excellent'

Obviously only had a pic face down for a reason.
Probably hoping to get someone who isn't very savy and has no clue what to do and will just accept it.
Also that crack will get bigger and bigger over time.

No that's not "Excellent"

I'd have listed that as Ok at best and then posted pictures of said scratches...

I'm always SUPER methodical with my ebay sales so people know exactly what they are getting. (Photos of any damage etc)

Dude is taking the mick if he didn't mention any cosmetic wear and tear.

What would a partial refund entail? You keep the phone and he gives you some of the money back? If so, then surely you could then buy a replacement screen for ~£20 and everything will be fine and dandy?

£21.99, you forgot about the antibacterial wipes at £1.99

Apart from the time, effort, and tiny little tools required.

I wouldn't be happy with that "solution" at all. If I bought a phone described as being in excellent condition, I wouldn't be interested in changing a screen over myself because it wasn't as described.

I might entertain the idea of a £50 refund - £20 for the screen and £30 for the inconvenience, otherwise I'd want a complete refund and I'd be sending it back!

not really - that is more needless faffing about for the OP over a problem he wasn't responsible for, he just needs a refund and the seller needs to be more honest in future
