Break checked and crashed

What jpaul said is totally sensible. Tapping the brakes does not mean, braking. A quick tap will make the brake light come on and warn the tailgater to back off. That is much safer than suddenly braking for real.
No, this is a terrible idea.

If someone is tailgating you just lift off and coast to slow down. If they've got no reaction time window in front of them, give yourself a much bigger one in front of you. This way the tailgater can either get on with his tailgating whilst you have adequate space in front to react smoothly to any changes, or they can overtake you. Both ways allow you to get on with your day without further stress.

OP not seen since, who’d have thought that would happen…

What the Audi did or people think intended to do isn’t really relevant. The camera car messed up hugely and binned it without the Audi forcing that situation.

There was no way this should have ended with a crash like that. The End

OP posted once and then made the video private?

To ensure you have enough distance to break in time, I was told to:

Pick a fixed point, like a sign or lamp-post.
When the back of their car passes it, say (out loud or in your head):
"Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule"
Say it at your normal speaking rate.

If you didn't reach the same fixed point in the time you were saying that sentence, you have enough space.

you need to protect yourself against them crashing into the back of you too (your insurance premium goes up too), antagonising them further by coasting, or engine braking, not sure;
tapping shows you are in control of your faculties, watching in your mirror, and know what is likely to happen, it's a conscious communication.

e: I somewhat think, if you could prove he braked from 65 to 25 in less than a couple of seconds, he would be partly culpable.

Title of the post should have been "I had enough time to slow down behind Audi but decided to go past him at the last minute instead, which I could have made but had doubts, tried to bail out of it at the last minute and hit the end of the barrier instead. Can I blame the other guy?"

do you not think dabbing the brakes is going to be antagonistic to someone tailgating you??

Highly unlikely since they were already in a 50mph speed camera monitored zone. So I suspect the Audi was sticking to 50mph esp with his exit coming up.

OP may well have been speeding of course ;)

Heh! Amazingly incompetent driving.

So many options where he could have safely not hit anything. It's like he actively tried to hit something.

Also why was he in the righthand 'overtaking' lane if you are about to try and come off left in to a filter lane?

That Audi did slow down a lot for no good reason, but even so!

anyway the audi was doing about 25mph as the op overtook him when he'd finished braking.
- green studs 8m apart 1 x 1 x 200 Length (m) x Gap (m) x Width (mm) @70mph road

From what i recall on the video it was in a roadworks zone where average speed check cameras are quite likely. So speed limit is likely 50mph (maybe 60mph if there's no work going on around it).
