BRINK

The patch is out? sweet

Also as was already noted the fact that they pulled brink from steam sales did hurt the game quite a bit...why did they do it and when is it going to be back on steam?

I think this patch and return to steam ought to boost active players quite a bit, it is a fantastic game.

And its only today I found out that tattoos are permanent after being applied...sad panda and should try to read more.

I read it was a rating issue for UK.

I opened steam and it didnt automatically start downloading the patch?

It sometimes takes a few minutes or so to kick in.

Steam picked the French download region, Marseille.

Its a stupid decision really, same with the scars. But then this game is full of stupid decisions.

Yet another 20 minutes spent on that ****ing ridiculous aquarium map. First point? Pretty easy, blow the storage door. Second point? Fair enough, not too much of a problem to edge forwards... right up until you get to the final area upstairs, then it becomes impossible to proceed and turns into your team getting destroyed for 10-15 minutes because they respawn so close to it.

Not to mention it gets tiresome being killed by some guy with an SMG over and over who seems to take barely any damage from you while killing you almost instantly. Dunno if its my ping (because for some stupid reason they didn't include it on the scoreboard) but the hitreg was pathetic.

Thats the problem with splash damage, someone comes up with some great sounding ideas that were probably mind blowing in their head, but can't possibly work in reality without either slowing down the gameplay, making it clunky or otherwise problematic. By the time they realise it doesn't work in actual live gameplay with random players and streamline/fix it most of the player base has left, so they then dumb the whole thing down to try and attract new players which drives off their hardcore player base.

ETQW was absolutely fantastic earlier on before they started trying too hard (and had the features in place to implement some of the more "great sounding" ideas).

What gets me is why they stripped away half the basic functions or made them pointlessly long-winded. Theres no numerical measure of ping as far as I can tell. You can't change body type mid-game probably because of the damn customisation feature preventing it. You can't choose load-outs and have to go through each time selecting your new gear. You can't choose new guns while dead so you can spawn with them, nor can you change class.

Tbh, I'm glad they they stopped you choosing load outs mid-game. Not so much for the other points though, I agree with them.

If you had people stopping to change load outs in the middle of a game, you'd forever find yourself a man down in a fast paced game. Or come the start of a round where speed can be essential to a quick victory on the first point, everyone would charge to change up to some thing more appropriate for that round.

I'm sure they could have fitted it in somewhere, in the warm-up mode or something, but loosing a game due to being a man down because of somebody fannying around trying to pick between which kind of red dot they want would be very annoying I think.

Not tried the patch yet, anyone else have? From reading plosts in the official forums it doesn't fix naff all, I'm beginning to lose my patience with Spash Damage

Evilsod why are you even still playing the game? You clearly hate every detail of the game, haven't said one good thing, and every other post is you mouthing off about it. Why not just find something else to play? I'll admit, the game has flaws, but they're there and will either be fixed - or wont, but in the meantime have to be put up with. So honestly either accept it and enjoy the game underneath, or play something else.

Had a couple of crashes since the patch last night but all in all seems a big improvement.

I paid 24.99 for this game on D2D think I've nearly got my monies worth.

As peeps said just needs to be on steam then this patched game will get a second wind.

Just copied the release notes from the splash damage forums.

The latest game update for the PC version of Brink is now available on Steam, containing several fixes and improvements. Among other things, this update addresses the sound dropping out on certain maps when playing networked games and adds the ability to filter servers by player numbers. As before, all you have to do to get the update is sign into your Steam client (and make sure it's not in offline mode).

If you're running a Brink server, there's also an improved version of the Standalone Dedicated Server to go with the update. You can grab the new server via your Steam client's Tools tab.

Full changelog follows below:

General:

Fixed sound dropping out when playing networked games
Improved graphical performance, especially when using Ambient Occlusion
Fixed voice packs being reset to default when you delete another character
Removed ability to use certain cheat protected commands in challenges
Fixed memory leak/crash when alt-tabbed out

User Interface:

Full servers are no longer filtered out of the browser
Added support for entering a range of numbers (i.e. 10-12) in server filters
Reduced font size in the server browser
Exiting Head customization returns to the correct menu
Fixed being unable to bind KP_Enter in the UI
Increased font size of in-game text chat
'Enter' now closes text chat prompt if empty
Fixed challenge in menu flashing even after completion

Dedicated Servers:

Improved dedicated server CPU performance
Fixed NPC not spawning for escort objectives online on servers using unsupported cvars

Can anyone confirm that the sound issues have been fixed please?

Does the patch actually fix performance? And if it does are the devs now going to move onto the broken gameplay, or just abandon the game like their last title?

Can only confirm that the patch works for me, using the latest nvidia drivers on a 460.

Had no sound issues
Can alt- tab
Can see players numbers instead of just blurred text

In about 3 hours of play.

I did have 2 CTD's tho but it's a lot better than it was

I don't mean that kind of load-out like modifying your weapons. I just mean having a selection of 2 weapons that you can select immediately. It gets tiresome swapping between the sniper rifle and pistol and SMG and revolver manually and because theres no way to change body type thats pretty much what you're stuck with all game. Its all well and good if a match needs you to swap to Soldier for a HE Charge but if it needs you to swap to a heavier body type to bring in some heavier weapons you're stuffed.

Meh, i had 3 games that started off fairly well balanced then it was followed up by that damn Aquarium level. 1 round where we pushed through to win. 1 round where we won fairly comfortably if it did take a little while to reprogram the rocket. 1 round where we on defence and won without even trying because the Hangar controls are right outside our spawn. Followed by Aquarium where you can't win unless your opponents REALLY suck. It gets frustrating.

The patch has sorted a lot, including improving the frame rate drastically. Sound issues are all fixed, server browser is much better too.

Just had a couple pub games with good players on both teams. Was most enjoyable few games I've had yet because everyone actually worked as a team, occasionally splitting into two smaller 4 man teams, one to hold off the enemy, and one to get an objective. The other team was also working really well together and the games were really close. When you get team play like that then the game really shines. I might just upload one of those matches in full because I think games like those are going to be pretty rare unless you're playing organised scrims. Having said that, I only see the hardcore players remaining after the first month or two, so play like that might actually improve.

How many hours you guys clocked so far?

Most of my friends are 45+ hours.. some over 100! Then again most of my steam friends were from ETQW.

People say it's good.. but then again they said that about Wolfenstein at first :p

You need to have a closer look at that map. Once the NPC is upstairs go to the bottom of the ramp and look at the wall. Theres a box with an air conditioning unit just above it and just above that theres an open vent.

Climb up and have a root around the ventilation system. It leads to a number of areas all of them outflanking the defence upstairs. You can nip through there and spring up and surprise them. Two of you in there while 3 more go for the npc and you'll push through no problems.

All of the most severe choke points have an outflank route, you just need to find it... Some you can only reach as a light body type, theres a cracking one in container village that just baffles peeps as to where you came from :)

Yes, they require a coordinated team to pull off. It doesn't really matter if you get in behind them unless you took a Silencer and kill every target before they figure out where you are at the same time your team is pushing forwards through the 4 mines and turrets lying around and the 5 other buffed players. And of course, if you take longer than 15 seconds to pull all this off, the respawned players swarm you from behind.

Defence can always win by just running around shooting stuff so long as enough of them do so near the objective. Some of the choke points are impossible to break through purely because of how close the enemies respawn to them.
