*** Car Wash / Valet / Detailing Thread ***

According to the blurb on the cartons it is but I suspect this is only the case if the car is relatively clean already

As a trio of products it might, they're designed to get you from dirty to clean but I don't think Polar Blast purports to do that on it's own:

Polar Blast is a snow foam available in a 2.5 litre which can be applied using a pressure washer or foam gun as a pre-wash stage. It covers the vehicle in a rich blanket of foam that clings to paintwork to gently loosen dirt and heavy soiling prior to shampooing.

This reduces the risk of scratches and swirl marks caused by a sponge or wash mitt moving over heavy contamination. Polar Blast can be used instead of a shampoo as long as the vehicle isn't heavily soiled, just be sure to rinse the vehicle with water first to remove the top layer of dirt.

Washed the car Saturday morning and it still looks clean today. Don't you just love it when the stars align and it doesn't rain the moment you wash it.

Nothing better! I did mine on Sunday… Extremely satisfying as I managed to do both Exterior and Interior.

Not been fortunate with weather since therefore been using my partners car ever since :p I’ll be forced to use it the rest of week but seems the forecast is being kind to me, stars aligning and all that :D

Chaps,

Is there any genius method for cleaning windscreens internally? Or do I just use the tools at the end of my wrists?

I once bought something similar to clean the windscreen of my first car, it was useful to reach and wipe symmetrically but found the low quality microfibre became saturated very quickly and useless. It was only cheap though and perhaps not comparable to the one you linked.

Thankfully, my Polo is easy to reach and is a doddle to wipe by hand compared to other cars I’ve had.

I think the key is having a couple of good quality lint free glass specific cloths.

My method below works for me..

If the window is really grubby and greasy, saturate a cloth and give it a good buff not worrying too much about the final finish.

Then with a second dry cloth a light mist of product and buff again firmly and quickly to the point you can see the product “flashing” and evaporating.

Finally with a completely dry lint free glass cloth buff again with no product but only lightly if required, key is lightly as you don’t want to inflict any micro so scratches to the glass. (Skip if you are happy with the finish already)

Another tip I’ve found helps to prevent (Condensation from heavy breathing after such work out of cleaning windscreen  ) is on the final buff have your blowers on high for your windscreen which also helps evaporate/flash glass cleaning product after wiping over it, meaning less buffing before all residue is removed.

Maybe it’s OTT but I’ve found the above steps leave behind crystal clear, streak free glass.

Yes, typed the wrong way. I’ve never got to the Polar Seal stage as I’ve not been able to get the car clean enough. At the moment I’m going to have to hand wash it first but I’d like to know why the snow foam application doesn‘t work.

@Hyburnate I’m applying the foams using a Kercher pressure washer with a snow foam attachment. It’s not the best but the foam does foam up and does apply well. The only possible issue is that it never sticks to the car and starts dripping off within a minute or so.

Polar blast is pretty rubbish tbh, you'll always need a contact wash regardless.

I've never found a foam that cleans as good as I'd imagine.
Always need a contact wash. I see some brown dribble off, but always loads left on the car.

I use bilt hamber foam. One covering then jet wash off. Then another covering and use a mit and a bucket of clean water to drain into in.

In winter I just do 2-3 spray and rinses. Gets off 99% without having to touch the paint.

Even a heavy duty Traffic Film Remover wouldn’t give you a completely contactless wash.

I think my next foam of choice will be Bilt Hamber Touchless to see what all the hype is about, especially as we’re coming into the filthy road grime seasons.

Been looking at Tyre Dressings - Soft99’s Tyre Wax caught my eye but not sure I want to clog up the tyre wall over time.

Garage Therapy Tyre Serum V2 I’ve decided on.

I have used plenty over the years but keep coming back to Bilt Hamber. The stuff doesn't have the magic "foam" for the instagram vids but it does the job fantastically.

I will soak and rinse then soak again and use a wash mit with a clean bucket of water. The water barely changes colour from dipping my mit.

As long as you have a good base of protectant on the car then cleaning is a doddle during winter. I normally do a big prep in October time.

I’ll admit, I’m a fan of the thicker foam and have previously used Autobrite - Magifoam, now onto Halfords Advanced (It was £16 for 5L and grabbed it locally when in need!)

Both extremely thick, I’d say Halfords Advanced even tops Magifoam for thickness though not necessarily cleaning power, sometimes I’ll add a small amount of Citrus or Surfex HD when required… BUT it does become a chore rinsing the thickness off the car and drive afterwards.

I’ve recently just used Surfex HD and Autobrite Citrus in the foam lance when doing a quick wash, short dwell and easy to rinse with great results leaning me towards trying Bilt Hamber Touchless.

Currently using Autofinesse Aqua Coat for my LSP.

During October like you, I plan to give the car a polish and seal it all in with a coat of Soft 99 Fusso F7 and then Soft99 Water Block over the top.

Then for maintenance washes I have a few to choose from…

Autobrite Project64
Autobrite Ceramic Refresh
Auto Finesse Aqua Coat
Sonax BSD
Car Plan - Super Gloss

To use as top ups when the Hydrophobic properties begin to slow down, should make winter car cleans a breeze.

Right gents/ladies,
I've been keeping my 12/13+ year-old Karcher going with duct tape and bubblegum for the last few years and it appears to have finally given up with it now sounding like a seized motor/pump (it dumped a load of white fluid, oil i'm thinking, down the hose and then buzzed). I haven't investigated but i'm thinking it might be worth just getting something else at this point.

What are we all using that's half decent for washing the cars (and patios once or twice a year)?
I did see the Karcher K5 Universal, seems to be a metal pump, but i've also read of people jumping to Ava which all seem to have a decent warranty compared to others (Karcher etc), although it all looks a bit too plastically especially the included gun and lance.

Is anyone using an Ava or had experience of them? Are they worth looking at or should i stick to a Karcher/Nilfisk etc?

I bought my Nilfisk E130 in 2011 and it is still going strong. Only thing I did was replace the hose on it as the one that came with it was a bit cheap but even that was within the first 3 years so the hose itself is a good ten years old.

The O-Rings sometimes leak where it attaches to the gun but that is pretty much it.

Following on from my post a few days ago about whether snow foam was any good or not, I decided to splash out and bought a new pressure washer (a Karcher K5) and a MJJC Snow Cannon v3. What a difference. The snow foam produced with this combination is as different as night and day as my previous set up. The snow foam (Polar Blast) now has the consistency of melted marshmallow rather than the watery mess that came out previously. It obviously made a big difference to how it worked so I ended up completing the three stage Autoglym process and sprayed on the Polar Seal for the first time.

The majority of folks here will know the need for a decent pressure washer and foam dispenser. I didn't so I'm putting this up for other beginners to find! Pics below...

Needed more snow foam and thought I'd pick up some of the GT range to try it out, may have got a little carried away. Also finally got myself a trigger gun.

Good choices there, I bought exactly the same last week except they didn't have the tyre serum in stock....love GT stuff... applied 2 coats of 3CS last weekend , hopefully last through to next year..with the odd top up of 2sigma.

Picture with the snow ?
I have yet to see a picture in thread of say >2" depth of snow across a car where you can no longer see car ... I guess ambient temperature also comes into play, for its endurance;
absence of that ,has not yet sold a snow cannon to me - I should also look upon the bonus of a workout carrying/setting up the K5 though
