Champions League Spoilers 21st/22nd Feb

Never mind this champions league malarky.

Newcastle played out a drab goaless draw against a poor Charlton side tonight.
More than 50,000 people turned up on a very cold wednesday night. (almost 11,000 more than at the Chelsea V Barca game)

Disapointing overall , a clean sheet but no spark or killer instinct from United but still kept the 4th consecutive clean sheet since the departure of souness.

Very much like saturday we were without Alan Shearer and again showed how much we will struggle without the great man , despite how we play.
The whole squad struggle without his presence on the pitch and these failings are plain to see.
Life without him will be very hard , to say the least.

Lots of players should have made thier mark tonight and stood up to be counted but alas , it didnt happen.

Never the less we moved up to 13th and 3 points behind saturdays visitors Everton.

Haway the lads!!

ps , the worst referee in the prem again frustrated the crowd with bizzare decision making and all round ineptness right through the game.
He even blew for half time instead of a foul 1 min before half time , making the crowd get up and head for the exits.
What a clown.
The ref was Mr Token Blackman aka Uriah Rennie if you didnt know.
Imo only there to appease the anti racist mob and a detriment to our game

Newcastle played...
Sorry, tuned out of your post after those two words. ;) :p

I do agree with some peoples opinions that you should support your home countrys teams in Europe until they play against your own.
That means ManU/Liverpool/Arsenal/Chelsea fans all supporting each other.
Likewise, its one of the few times when i want to see Juve & to a far lesser extent, Inter, win.

I still tip Juve to win the whole thing.

Although i think Juve are great side their loss yeserday didnt really convince me of winning champions league. I havnt seen much of Juventus but they have a lot of talent in their Side some very world class players.

I dont know its a toughy to pick the winner but everyone entitled to their own opinion. :)

That was never a sending off, clumsy tackle went for the ball and missed, yellow at most, but the ref had almost guaranteed at least one shocking decision with his pre match comments & something has to be done about the amount of blatant cheating going on now. del Horno & Messi were a complete embarrassment:(
I though we did quite well considering, but 2 goals is 1 too many I fear...

Maureens interview last night with sky was a masterclass, totally deflected grief from his team and got the papers effectively talking about something else.

I think the sending off was a touch harsh but if you look at it, a few mins prior Del horno clattered into messi and gave away a free kick, and then he was nibling at him and missed with a tackle earlier in Messi`s run and then clobbered him totally missing the ball, they were both rolling around like a bunch of muppets, i can see why the ref sent him off tbh.

Ronaldinho and messi were a diferent class when on the ball tho, is it right that messi has a 101 mill release clause in his contract? the lad is something special.

great match ruined by poor reffing and some poor playing - up until the sending off I truly thought that we had the makings of a classic match between two great rivals....after the sending off I was incredibly proud of the way we stood up for 70 min against the 11(12 ;) ) men of Barca - but the last ten minutes you could see the tiredness coming out....I think we can score in the Camp Nou, not sure if we will go through though.

The crowd were brilliant - stood for the whole match and sang the Barca fans down right until the very end....

PS Vandle - you're always going to have more fans at Newcastle than at Chelsea - our capacity is only 44k before UEFA start turfing people out of their season ticket seats for TV/corporate jollies ;)
T'was a sell out a long time ago with tickets being put up on Ebay for £800/pair....(not tempted, even though it could have paid for 3/4 of my two season tickets for next year)

Well im fearing that Sissoko wont be playing again, any damage to the eye is career threatening, he's is going to be lucky if he gets to put on a red shirt again. Such a promising talent i hope that a miracle can happen now, just so unlucky :(

Chelsea fans seem to forget that even if the Garcia goal wasn't given it would have been a penalty and a red card. Before you say that nobody know's what the ref would have given, he actually came out a week after the game and said he played the advantage and if it wasn't a goal he would have awarded the penalty and sent Cech off.
.

he certainly did say that which to me left me with another question , if he would have given a penalty and a red card but played the advantage then surely he should have still have given the red card at the next break in play

Unjustifyed & misinformed.
Ive never seen antics like this from Milan, Juve, Inter, Udinese, Fiorentina or Roma.
Ive seen occasional diving, but thats common in all teams & leagues.
But the likes of what Barca were upto. I dont think so.

ROFFEL MAYO

Totti is on every hollywood B-movie directors list. It is a part of their culture to protest and act unsporty. I do agree tho that Spain has been worse lately.
Also dont forget the less fashonable Dutch league. I produced it on TV for 2 years and holy do they moan and shout at the ref! Diving is laughable too.

No swearing.

Gilly.

JohnnyG - MHL is where I am, did try and get in a bit earlier but got ummm...waylaid by some alcohol :D so didn't see it personally, but it's been mentioned by more than a few peeps I speak to/mail that the ref, while warming up, exchanged tidings with the Barca fans - I'm sure its nothing, but given the focus on the reffing before the match it's going to be picked up on by Blues fans, if no one else.
(conspracy mode on)
Chelsea have met Barcelona in 3 instances in the Champions League.
In each of those, Chelsea have had a man sent off.
Conclusion - UEFA dont like us :p
(conspiracy mode off)

PS - nice arse piccie in the Rogues Gallery.

I don't think they've been ahead against 11 men either.
