Sadly this is somewhat ignorant and insensitive.

If it is a mental illness (and I would always say that people are far too negative about the connotations of mental illness) then whatever treatment works best for them is the right one.

I have far less sympathy for treating people with self inflicted injuries - alcohol / smoking / obesity related illnesses than for those who have chemical / hormonal / neurological imbalances that they have little to no control over.

I understand that there are sub-types of gay i.e. masculine gay and feminine gay, but if you're not gay/bi etc, then you're just straight. The word straight is 2 syllables less than cisgender

What if you are born with a penis, but identify as a woman and therefore are attracted to men?

Is that gay? In this scenario the transgender person would not think so, because their genitalia doesn't define them.

My friend is a man with a penis, who Identifies as a woman, but is a lesbian.

I kid you not, he is very feminine and comes across as gay (male to male) to most people, and is in fact gay (but female to female)

How messed up must your circle of friends be that you feel the need to declare that you are comfy with the gender you are assigned? I'm not being funny here, but if you have a mate in your circle of friends who is a bit confused with things, that's easily dealt with, isn't it? "Ah, that's JimBobSarahSusan, (s)he's a bit confused" and that's that. Same thing with two people, "ah, that's JimBobSarahSusan and LucyBillMikeElaine, they're a bit of an odd pair but it works for them and they're happy so good luck to them".

Even three or four, you can simply say that they're a different bunch but that's all there is to it.

I must beg the question, to what extent must your circle of friends be confused for you to feel the need to stand up and declare yourself cisgender? I can imagine a circle of people all introducing themselves and suddenly someone gets fed up with all the confused people and just blurts out that he / she's cisgender.

I would say it is, regardless of it's acceptability. It's not something I have a problem with, or condemn but then nor do I automatically place a negative slant on the term mental illness.

It does however fall into a very different realm, liking the same sex isn't the same thing as believing you are a different sex, it's much 'milder' imo.

I suspect I have a significantly more objective view of these things than the modern world would deem acceptable in most cases.

If your job isn't to be a politician then don't talk politics at work. The quickest way to cause unnecessary drama is to be seen to give a toss about anything remotely emotionally charged.

By following this simple advice you also remove the possibility of having the same opinions on something that the weird guy has and being spoken to more by them.
