Hi Guys,

New to the forums, been looking to pick up a laptop suitable for a bit of gaming, nothing hardcore just WAR and suchlike. There are a few okay branded laptops around however they all seem to have something not suitable like an older gc, WXGA screen res on a 15Inch. I came across the OC Ultimate and it seems to fit the bill in every way, decent graphics card, good build, not loud and WXSGA screen.

Can I just ask what the screen quality is like as not much has been mentioned? Also according to OC's sales people they have no eta for the laptops however in the forums it is implied that they should be arriving this week, can anyone shed any light I am looking for the following spec:
Ultima Mobile - 15.4" WSXGA Laptop
4 Gb Ram
WD Scorpio 7200rpm 320g HD
P9500 CPU

Thanks for any comments.

Hi,

apart from the processor same spec as mine, The screen on mine is of a very good quality in my opinion seem's to cope with FPS well, however you might find it difficult to use in bright light (outside on a sunny day, I know we dont have many of these in the uk BUT JUST GOT BACK FROM Cyprus) was difficult to use in those conditions perfectly fine indoors.....

Hope that help's

PS Viewing angles seem a bit tight....

Can someone please try and answer these questions because I really want to order one of these in the next couple of days! :p

Is it really worth getting the P9500 over the T9400 or even the P8600?

If I get it with 4GB of memory will it be worth getting a 64-bit version of Vista with the risk of encountering more problems with drivers and stuff?

Is it worth getting the Intel WiFi Link 5300 over the standard 802.11b/g wireless?

Thanks in advance.

ok well i'd go for the P8600 as the P range have a lower TDP wattage meaning more battery life. plus its only £23 more for 200Mhz unlike the T9400 which is about £80 for 300Mhz... doesnt make sense to pay £80 for 300 when 200 is £23.

i dont know much regarding the 4gb, but for the sake of £18 for an extra 2GB, if you have the spare cash i'd go for it, regardless of if vista 64bit works etc. as you'd only lose 512MB of ram from your 4GB in xp 32 bit or vista 32 bit.

The wireless network im unsure of, are you planning to use the wireless on a day to day basis? also are you just needing 802.11b/g speeds? (11/54mbp) if you need a more reliable card and faster, the intel would be better for that little bit extra. i guess it depends on what the internal 802.11b/g card is i.e. what brand.

Thank you, sja360! Ok, I'll get the P8600 processor since it seems like it's the best value. I'm definitely going to go with 4GB of memory, but I just don't know whether I should get the 64-bit or 32-bit version of Vista. I think I'll probably go with the former.

What have other people gone for with these laptops O/S-wise?

And regarding the wireless card, I really don't know what to go for here! I'll be using an ethernet cable most of the time (in university halls), but when I move out or if I'm around and about the university I'll probably be relying on a wireless signal.

Well the main difference between the 8600 and the 9400 isn't just the difference in speed but also it has 6meg level 2 cache rather than 3 meg, depends what you need in the end of the day.

Thanks for the reply, this laptop will only be used indoors for gaming, I have a Dell m1300 xps for portability.

I am running 64bit Premium and it all seems fine, what peripherals would you be using, there seem's to be more drivers around these days. i have not experienced any issue's yet, apart from with the software for a western digitial NAS.

PS have the 5300 card in mine and it is faultless, works well with my wireless N router....for the extra £19 it's probably worth it for a little bit more speed hen connected to a wireless n router.

Am I best to get the P8600 though as this will mainly be used for normal office tasks, internet surfing etc.?

Hi,

Is there any stock update, your sales department didn't have a clue?

Also on one of your competitors sites you are able to order the 9800gt on the 15Inch for slighty extra, are you able to do this?

Also do you use AC for the CPU/Heatsink and what make of memory are you currently using?

Cheers

I doubt it, i ordered well over a month ago, not my definition of "very soon".

Don't worry about the 9800gt, its a rebranded 8800m gtx and doesn't include any of the improvements of the 9 series for tiny performance increase

the memory is
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-10666 DDR3 SODIMM (OCZ3M13334GK)
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-124-OC

its all good quality gear

Thanks a lot for the reply, I think I will order one once I know they are in stock, any ETA? Also do you reckon it is better going for the 8000 or 9000 range for the CPU?

Cheers

Well they have indicated this week, if not I will get a laptop elsewhere, seem to be plenty of these models around!

Hi - welcome to the forum.

All new laptops are on route, we expect them to arrive immenently, as ever with Far East deliveries Customs can delay things. General feedback has been good and I think most would agree they are excellent value for money.

Hold onto your cash for just a few more days and we should be able to wet your appetite with larger range...

Cheers,

Rupert ;)

Hi Rupert,

Thanks for the welcome and reply. If you are sure they are are due in the next few days I am more than happy to wait and place an order. I take it turnaround is pretty quick once they are in your hands?

In real terms is there much difference between the the 2 CPU series on offer?

Cheers

Justin

Can you elaborate on the "larger range" as I'm literally just about to place an order. Will it affect the Ultima Mobile 15.4" range  i.e. will there be more options?? If so, I might wait (will lose the 666 offer though ).

justinl01 - I can confirm they have a very quick turn around!
I bought a ultima mobile and although I had to wait for customs etc (it was the first batch) they had despatched my laptop within a day of receiving it! amazing service in my eyes.

Thanks for the information Ninja. I just wish they would come out with some concrete information rather than anytime now, that could mean yesterday or next Friday. I know there are now a few companies selling these laptops who seem to have it in stock, though OC's prices seem more favourable. Asus have just released there G71v as well which would have been interesting apart from the use of a 9700GT graphics card.

Any update would be most appreciated I am being nagged by my wife to get something in asap so I can move my other pc's.

Unfortunately shipping from the far east can be like that :(
It's simply a case of it arrives when it arrives because custom, and literally shipping can slow things down a lot.
