Cruicial M4 0009 Firmware Update

creating a bootable usb sounds too complicated after a quick google I'll just wait and buy a cd-r

It's really easy. Well the way I did it is MUCH easier than the tutorials online ;)

Open up the M4 0009 Firmware update ISO in 7-Zip, go into the BOOT\ISOLINUX folder and extract the BOOT2880.IMG file.

Download UNetbootin and load it up. Choose your USB flash drive, click the Diskimage radio button and from the dropdown box next to it choose floppy.

Use the ... button to browse for files and choose the BOOT2880.IMG file that you extracted.

Hit OK. The files will be copied to your memory stick. Reboot the PC with the memory stick in and make sure you turn AHCI off in the BIOS and flash the new firmware.

Job done! :)

Recieved the drive today, installed it and immediately updated to 0009 (via a USB stick, very easy to do) and did a clean install of Windows. Updated directly to latest Intel chipset and Intel Storage drivers. Does this look any good? Some of it is okay but other results (4K) look a bit low imo. This is on a SATA II interface on my HM55 laptop.

looks good - 2 peoples #s for sata 2 right on the page you posted so compare to them. Your read speeds look quite high (so thats always nice) ...

I was able to tweak the RAID setup of the 2 x 64GB M4's and was able to squeeze out some better numbers than I got before.

System:

  • i2500k CPU running at 4.2Ghz overclocked (stock volts)
  • 2 x 64GB Crucial M4 SSD's running firmware 0009
  • 8GB Kingston PC10666 DDR3 Ram (HyperX Blu)
  • Gigabyte SoC GTX460 1GB Graphics Card
  • MSI P67-G45 B3 Motherboard running latest beta bios.
  • Antex TX650W Power Supply
  • Antec 300 Case

But without trim these won't last long will they, performance will just keep dropping?

With trim, how long before performance on these drives starts to degrade? Seems a bit of a major negative for SSD's if you ask me. What do you need to do to restore performance? A reinstall of windows?

Why are the seq write times so slow?

my spinpoints seq's are faster than that

64GB drives have less channels, so writes are slower.

With TRIM performance won't degrade, that's the whole point of TRIM.

I know TRIM is supposed to reduce degredation. But I didn't think it stopped it altogether?

Drives with proper TRIM support, such as these Crucial drives will have a very small performance degradation compared to a fresh drive, you honestly don't have to worry about it.

If you look at this review of the new firmware on Anandtech you can see after TRIM has done its magic that performance is good as new.

So glad I got this baby whilst it was on offer.

No before bench's unfortunately.

It does seem that write speeds vary a lot more than read speeds, none the less I'm happy :D

Mine seemed slow but I just timed it with a stopwatch and its around 16 seconds from entirely off to the login screen. Guess I must be impatient :p

I followed these instructions to the letter and tried with a cd-r and it won't boot from the usb or the cd xD
