Dark Souls 2 - Thread

Don't neglect the Adaptability stat, it might be overlooked initially cos it boosts resistance levels, which in Dks1 where pretty useless. But this time round it boosts a new Agility (AGL) stat which is very important I feel. As soon as I got that above 90, I was getting hit far less, and was rolling much further.

I'm gonna get that stat up quite high on my playthrough. Like all games, I'm gonna be a DEX build.

I am going to try and make sure this is the first game in the series I will actually finish.

I want to make my Knight all tanky, any suggestions for what stats to just concentrate on?

Take the following to their soft caps :

VGR - 20
END - 20
VIT - 29

And stack ADP until your AGL soft caps at 110. ATN also contributes to AGL, although less so than ADP, but it's worth bearing in mind if you wanna cast some spells.

Beyond that you can mix it up a bit depending on what weapons you wanna use or if you wanna chuck some spells.

Bear in mind that most stats soft cap pretty early so try to avoid sinking all your souls into one stat. The game rewards balanced builds.

Yep I'm playing a swordsman, focusing on Dex(dmg)>Adp(poise/resist/agi)>End(stam)>Vit(load increase, trying to keep mobility around 50%)

I tend to just use 2 hand light weapons as a swordsman, is this wrong?

Thanks, this is very helpful as a good place to start.

Bought the explorer ring (can't remember the name, but it's the one where you hear hidden enemies and other things) from the cat for about 5000 souls, I think it was.

Seems utterly useless. If the cat doesn't give me a refund, it will feel the wrath of my +2 halberd.

That's a bit strong dude.

Plenty of people don't like dark souls, it doesn't make them some sort of inferior gamer. Dark souls games are notorious for having a storyline that is a bit 'thin' compared to other RPGs. The plot is pretty simple and the various fragments of ambiguous story can fail to satisfy after a while. It's a shame considering how fantastic the ambiance of the game is and the quality voice acting.

I didn't say you're an inferior gamer if you don't like Dark Souls. I did however say that if you don't "get" the appeal of Dark Souls, you belong in a different gaming environment (and there's ultimately nothing wrong with that). Some people love MS3, others love Candy Crush - to each his own. I don't think highly of these people as gamers but so what? I'm sure you can find people who don't think highly of my gaming choices - not the end of the world.

Similarly, the difficulty is overhyped a bit. The game isn't as hard as a lot of people make out, particularly the post-patch/nerfed PC version. I don't remember dying once in the last 25% of the game on PC (admittedly I'd already played it through on xbox) and I'm a pretty average gamer. Within a week of release there were a bunch of people finishing with novel challenges (SL1/no deaths/no bonfires/under 2 hours).

The difficulty is not overhyped at all. In fact, the game is forgiving, dare I say, even easy but only if you know the mechanics, the timings etc. You cannot know these things after the tutorial and, for most people, you don't know them in the first ten, twenty hours often more. Unlike most other games these days, Dark Souls forces you to learn - in other words, your character levels up, gains new stats, new spells, new weapons but, more importantly, you level up too. Your hand eye coordination, your reaction time, your in game knowledge gradually increase to the point where a highly skilled dedicated player can probably finish the game with the starting equipment and little/no souls invested.

It's a solid RPG with awesome gameplay, but the fanboyism around dark souls titles can be pretty unbearable.

I think this is related to the fact that there's nothing like Dark Souls on the market. It being unique makes the fans a bit overly attached but I would say this is understanding. What's the industry doing? Why aren't there more games like this out there?

I like the game, don't get me wrong, but it's far from a masterpiece. There are some glaringly obvious flaws like soul memory that really ruin the experience in some ways.

What game do you consider to be a masterpiece?

I'm loving ds2, great game, good port (things can always be better...etc) well worth the price.

ds2 will seem easier if you are a ds veteran, if it's a first go around then it will seem almost impossible - but it's not important as everyone will play differently.

ng+ in ds1 was easy, however ds2 ng+ from what i've seen so far is a nice bump up.

I agree. A good game, but hardly perfect. A large amount of people seem to treat it beyond criticism.

Personally, whilst I liked it quite a bit, I didn't think it was in the same class as Dark Souls.

I wished they improved the dialogue system seems a bit tedious having to go through conversations to find out if the npc will give you a item

I love this in a DS game, if you want the story, then even better.

Personally, listen to the voice acting. Takes no more than a minute and you might learn something about the game...

I've had no real problem with any boss (except the three Ruin Sentinels) until Smelter Demon..
I've never had a stronger urge to smash my skull into the wall until today. At least 15 tries before I got him, one more death and I don't think my peripherals would have survived.

Played like 7 hours so far. Not any problems, seems to be a bit easier then DS1 but could be placebo as learned how to play after beating that.

Couldve done with a graphical update though

Girlfriend sent me this.

Get in! Beat the Ruin Sentinels first time. You have no idea of the frustration the first time I played it!

Lost Bastille really is an incredibly well made area, and it looks even better now.

EDIT- Spent the last hour just helping people with the Ruin Sentinels. It is a fantastic boss in terms of co-op. However, I am reminded of one thing that really annoys me-

I am sure many will disagree, but I think the Heirs of The Sun should be easier to join. Unless you specifically go looking for them, it is unlikely you will find them until you have played a fair bit of the game. You could technically get there very quickly, but nobody is gonna do that on their first try.

When I played it before, I had already done loads of co-op before joining, and after joining them, it felt like I was grinding too much to level it up.
