Dark Souls 2 - Thread

Anyone waiting for a physical version from the rainforest place?

I pre-ordered the collector's edition and despite Amazon estimating it will be delivered on the 2nd, it still hasn't been dispatched yet!

FFS! steam is really ruining it for me tonight. Trying to roll around the Smelter Demon is hard enough without a message appearing on the middle of the screen you have to get rid of!

In your opinion and probably lots of others too. But then lots of others thought DS1 was gods gift to man and I thought it was damn awful!

I guess I'll just have to accept that Dark Souls isn't for me :(

So why get DS2 if you didnt like the first? Personally this game series gave new life to me in what was becoming a stale hobby. Hardly ever finishing games, all feeling mundane. Then i played DS and loved it.

Maybe more suited to us older ones who grew up on arcade games where the main objective of them were to kill you as much as possible but make you keep playing to get that little bit further next time thus get your ten pences.

so then you need to re-evaluate why you are buying sequels to a game you didn't like in the first place.

Older ones? I'll have you know I go back to the days of the Amstrad and BBC ;) It's just the controller set up doesn't work too well, for example clicking the left stick when running on another button makes you jump. The amount of times I've accidentally hit the soul gem button :(. I'll probably give the keyboard and mouse a try, I'm not to good on controller based games anyway! Hard to believe I started my gaming life on a one stick joystick ;)

I didn't buy anything, it was given to me as a press build release. Phew!

EDIT : Forgot to mention, the second one was supposed to be much better in the pc control department, at least I gave it a chance!

Really struggling to dual-wield Iron Keep. Gonna have to go back to shield I think. The guards attacks are barely telegraphed and it is very easy to get caught out.

In fact tbh, I have only stayed dual-wielding for two bosses, the rest I revert to shield.

For those ones I found rolling directly at them when they attacked made them miss and I could get behind to crit, they are fast buggers though.

With keyboard and mouse that statement is accurate. Having never played either of them with a controller I can say with certainty that DS2 has the better control set, albeit it has some bugs that need addressing. If you go back and read my first impressions on the controls I was actually considering plugging in my xbox pad but I persevered and got to know the mouse modifiers like shift click to interact, shift right click to use items and after some changes I found a setup I liked. This is where the bugs come in; because it is nigh impossible to do a forward + attack special move with the mouse buttons because of the double click feature: this needs fixing. But to get around that bug I made two macros for guard block and jump attack, which are the only two forward + attack specials, and bound them to my two mouse side buttons. I also changed use item to shift + double right click because I kept pressing it and wasting items with the default method. Also noticed there is two different camera sensitivity sliders, one in the key binds and one in the game options, so to get the right feel I had to complete decrease the slider in the game options and put the slider in the key binds down to about 20%.

I know this won't make you like the game any more and I'm not attempting to make you like it. Just letting you know from someone that has played both solely with kb+m this one is much improved, if you are prepared to tweak it a little.

To be honest dual wielding is pretty lack lustre unless you are using Power Stance with weapons that can stun enemies, maces/large weapons etc.

Aye, using power stance and less than 25% equip load with poison short sword and falchion, it doesn't do that much damage compared to what I see others doing when in co-op but the move sets are awesome when they all link together. The poison short sword can poison mobs after about 5 pokes, it's quite nice.

My order seems to have disappeared...

Go check your orders on the Amazon website and see if it's not just me :(.

How does bleed work on weapons? The greatsword has bleed damage listed but I've yet to see it cause bleeding, even during longer fights (bosses).

I use the ring that limits hollow health loss while exploring a new area and then use the one that cancels death effects at the boss so I don't normally use an effigy more than once per map. Have plenty of spares and I'm 2/3 into the game.

I don't use effigies at all. I go help someone via co-op when I want to get human again.

Yeah, me too. Always people needing help at most levels for Ruin Sentinels, Lost Sinner and Smelter especially... Was very annoying when steam was down last night though.

With regards to dual-wielding, the biggest problem is, as Fenris said, you need something that stuns. The guys in iron keep for example have attacks that I couldn't interrupt at all. I am using the falchion now, which I have to +7.high damage, bleed damage and a cool movement. Still using a scimitar in the other hand, but I do have the uchi now, so might fit that in somewhere.

One question- would you say poise is useful at all for dw?... I am wearing light gear, but with the drangleic leggings as I like a bit of poise for when I do use a shield.

I was wondering this last night too. As I had been playing with <50% equip load and dual wield with the elite knight armour. I came to the conclusion that it wasn't a good idea to be trying to roll and dodge attacks with such equip load because of the distance that you roll; having poise was all well and good but I wasn't supposed to be getting hit in the first place meaning poise was a stat that I only partly relied on. So I changed my items to the "Aurous Set" that raises equip load, and is also very light, to get <25% equip load. After that my dodges were much better at avoiding attacks.

As for how I play dual wield, when fighting packs I don't use lock on, that way my sweeping attacks will hit multiple mobs. Because I don't stun I have to be prudent and swing a couple of hits and then dodge away. For the bigger/more hp mobs I poke at them with my poison short sword and then watch their hp drain away. :D

How do you get bleed damage? I'd like to toy with that and poison.

I'm struggling to find a reason to stick with dual wielding at the moment. The damage output is nice - I invaded someone's game last night and minced them up in short order :D - but am not finding it that much fun in pve now the novelty has worn off. Parry verges on useless and the whole trick to playing as the swordsman seems to be staying behind people and rolling about. Pretty much the same tactic a tank class would use, but without the massive usefulness and variety of having a shield and loads of armour. This might just be frustration kicking in - I must have died 20 times in a row trying to solo the Sentinels with dual weapons, yet took them on the second attempt just be equipping a shield - but it does feel like something is missing being a nimble, dextrous class.
