***Dayz: Stand Alone Thread***

hi i was thinking about getting this is it worth it yet or shall i wait till its out of alpha stage??? also keep getting told of different ways to get ie straight from steam or through the armor package any input appreciated...

No, do not pay for this. Not even at £1 is it worth putting up with the sheer number of things that are utterly broken in this so called 'game'.

Every single game will have dodgy AI doing something dodgy at some point during a game, SA has "constant" dodgy AI and has done since release. You could post a video of every single game made where the AI will bug occasionally but not on the grand scale of clipping through walls/floors "all" the time. But yeah all the above games have AI where they can climb stairs etc and most of the time the AI will not bug for a entire playthrough.

LOL Trawling through youtube for odd clips of dodgy AI trying to justify the cack AI in Dayz..

That makes it even worse! They rewrote it and it's still seemingly not good enough, brings us back to the fact that they don't know what they are doing...

But that's besides the point because I didn't think we were really talking about AI in the sense of behaving like intelligent enemies - especially not in the case of DayZ where if anything the developer has the golden ticket, the get-out-of-jail-free card that zombies aren't supposed to be super smart in the first place... The "AI" in DayZ's zombies should pretty much boil down to:

* Shamble around the place in a "random" way
* If a noise source is detected head towards it
* If a player is close to you attack and follow

(and I guess the one thing we were actually talking about)

* Don't magically teleport about the place and clip through walls and other obstacles

It's not like they need to execute complex flanking behaviours and recognise when they're the last enemy standing in an area so they can react and retreat, they're zombies

This engine cannot and will not be suitable for this type of game, and the dev's know it... but here's a new hat :p

See my comment above!

i tried to point out to people other day was banned for a month off the dayz forums :p

they chose the wrong engine for a start.

now they just trying to make a engine that doesn't suit what they want to do do what they want.

it wont work well they know it but what can they do now ?

people just say its alpha when you state obvious and so do the devs. so just play other games and forget it.

Half the problem with the AI is that in the mod most of the buildings weren't enterable at all. The ones you could go in were a quick way to escape a zombie because the pathing didn't work at all.

So given that they've been "well aware" that a key part of their game hasn't been working properly since the beginning (or even before that I guess as the zombies glitched about all over the place in the mod too) - why do they seemingly still almost a year later not have the issue sorted?
It's fixable, they've already spoken about what needs doing. The navmesh is still way better than what there was before. It opens up the possibility of roaming hordes later on. Imagine hiding in a building only to see a blob of zeds coming over the top of a hill heading right towards you? Sounds like great fun to me.

Once the clipping issues are fixed for all zombie types (disappearing into the floor, walking / hitting through walls and doors) they'll be quite servicable. The guy leading the team responsible for doing it said it's not at the top of his team's priority list compared to other engine work which needs doing. It'll be interesting to see how they manage that with the introduction of barricading and other dynamic obstacles.

They have a functional engine with which to build and test all their assets while they rewrite most of it. Sounds like a great advantage to be able to test everything as you go along.

I'd be interested to hear about your experiences with the new graphics and sound engines since they haven't been implemented at all as far as I know.

Based on what evidence? I was in the 100 player test ages ago and it worked fine, considering how utterly ropey the current engine is things can only get better.

you obviously like how it is. most of us who put in thousands of hrs in hardcore see instantly how it is now and think they missed a opportunity to make the best game of this type.

"The navmesh is still way better than what there was before/ path finding ."

haha they shown a eg of how it will work better and within seconds i pointed out how in the whole town they had missed one of the main buildings you go in for loot ! LOL.

thats where actually playing your game and knowing how it works is almost as valuable as knowing how to make it !

why would they do that if they knew it is a main building?

shows they have no idea in the game.

i know there is a lot to dislike about the game but, consistently entering this thread to just see constant bashing about the game with little constructive criticism is just becoming tiresome to read.

maybe it's because 99% of the people who bought it trusted Rocket to give us the game that he promised.

A lot off us had started playing Dayz before it was mentioned in any of the popular youtubers etc. In fact I know at least 3 of us were playing it at version 1.2 something.

So to see how far all the similar mods have developed, and then to mark them against each other, there is no comparison between the mods and the official game..

TBH, the standalone has no redeeming features in it that the mods haven't already tried or do better. That's why people get peed off at the standalone.

I never bought it ;) because I didn't like that the new SA version they'd been bigging up for so long wasn't on a totally new engine as they implied it would be... Looks like I made the right choice

It still irks me though, just to see something managed and developed so poorly

exactly,a lot of people paid out their money, me being one, on the back of these promises which are fast becoming an illusion. any other business and it would be fraud/false advertising.....and before the 'but you knew it was alpha' crowd jump in, yes I like everyone else (mostly everyone :p) knew it was an alpha build when we bought it.
but still bought it on the strength of the promises (lies) coming from the dev team.
rocket might be able to get a job over at hammerpoint interactive, he'd fit in well there! :p

Experimental servers went down when they upgraded stable to 0.49. They were going to upgrade experimental to 0.50 on Monday, but there were issues with the update so it was delayed. It may happen today.

The new update is just server side bug fixes, so the two versions won't play much different.
