De-lidded 3770k!!

If only they sold something that dissolved the bonding agent, instead of cutting through it

Has anyone got a sample they could test on a few solvents?
Which solvents might damage the PCB?
If the sealant is rubbery we might need to use benzene or similar I expect.

Cutting it is far too risky.

The other problem is once the IHS is off how do you stick it back on?
The sealant needs to be exactly the right height or the IHS might not even make contact with the core.

well i sat here this morning, with an old pentium 4 prescott.. managed to gently cut around the edges to release the IHS. popped it off, to find the core was thermal compounded to the ISH. so the cpu is now naffed..
but in a positive note, i epoxied the ISH back on. drilled a nice hole through the corner of the cpu, amd i have now got it as a key ring on my car keys :-)

i have many of old chips layin around. i am offering to experiment with different solvents, :-)
all the chips i have are way outdated now, so no worries if i break them.
you give me an idea of what sort of solvents to test out, just a ball park idea. and i will give it a go amd report back. :-)

Nonsense. If you do it properly it's really hard to kill your chip. I've seen about two dead chips and probably 50+ sucessful delids in other places (OCN, XS).

You tend to only see people say they've killed it, those that don't just get on with it (done 3 here no problems).

its great if you pull it off,you all must have thicker wallets than i

id happily straighten a bunch of bent cpu socket pins anyday than delid an ib chip

There was an amusing guy on OCN that took 3 attempts for not killing his cpu.
