De-lidded 3770k!!

@Rossi regarding the TIM, is liquid pro/ultra conductive as this is the best known to lower temps and most used in de-lidding?

Like all metals, our Liquid Metal may act as an electric conductor. This forms no problem if applied according to our instructions, as your cooler is made of conducting metal as well. Make sure "Coollaboratory Liquid Pro" does not touch any electric components. This could lead to shortcuts when turning the computer's power on. If you spill some of the Liquid Metal, wipe it away thoroughly before turning your PC on. Larger quantities can be sucked away with a syringe, or use a paper towel for smaller amounts. For final cleaning some scrubbing detergent might be helpful.

Your safest TIM would be Arctic Cooling MX-3 or MX-4.

I have some very old AS5 syringes. I'll be using Gelid GC-Extreme though. I see what you mean about sealants, I have some black motorcycle exhaust sealant which is rated up to nearly 300c. Should do it if I needed it. :p

Ok, many hours later:

One dead 3570K and a scratched D-14. Live and learn I guess! When cutting the IHS off the green surface got ever so slightly nicked. Wasn't that hard to get it off, but I don't recommend it I feel it is definitely very risky. I thought at first maybe it wasn't seated correctly, so i tried again. Motherboard beeps repeatedly then restarts. Removed battery, same again. Re-seated and did the TIM again and same result.

I called time of death at 19:01 on 19 October 2012, R.I.P. 3570K. :(

any pic on the pcb? the thermal paste might be shorting if its nicked? could seal it with some nail varnish and retry

this is why im reluctant to try it,ive fixed mangled cpu pins but this is tricky

theres a 3570k on the mm,

I might take a pic later, it's showing the golden colour underneath the PCB, the die didn't get touched as I did it so carefully. I don't think any TIM is touching it, but it's non conductive anyway? Will try the nail varnish tomorrow for the sake of £180 lol.

Seen some people be so brutal with their chips I'm surprised mine is damaged.

I don't think I can see the Members Market...don't meet the criteria.

If only I was a cross dresser or had a girlfriend...might go down the shop and get some of that nail varnish lol. I'll take a pic in a moment, I'm almost out of GC-Extreme as well.

£shop it is.

Top right corner.

Maybe the IHS is causing it to short rather than TIM? It's a long shot...

I think a stanley knife is much more rigid and better for cutting the IHS off.

I thought it was 1000 posts to get onto Members Market?

I remember de-lidding some old skt 478 Celeron years ago, killed the chip though, heatspreader made a cool keyring due to the small hole it already had on it, still have it on my keyring to this day.

Haha, maybe I'll drill a hole in this one as a reminder. My P4 has that hole too I think.

Guess I'm off to ****o as they are 24/hr and do nail polish. :D It's 1000 posts but 180 days...

I nicked the outside of the pcb just slightly but shouldn't be anything there anyway, can't even see it in pictures. Will update in an hour or two. :)

I wish... It's just how the picture came out, D5100 don't know what settings I had it on to make the colours that bad. Guess it's the light. :p

I lost my electrical tape in a house cleanup I think. I have some leftover stuff from my Accelero that I didn't bother using that should work I'll give that a try. - nevermind, can't find it and can't remember where I put it. :p

Currently holding my cpu feels about 10p worth of materials probably all it's worth now. :D

Got some insulating tape, unfortunately it didn't work. It's gone. :( Hope I do better in the silicon lottery next time around at least. Roll on Tuesday. :D

Might go for a 2500K this time around, it's not really a downgrade or an upgrade, but runs cooler? I don't think I'll miss anything the 3570 has that the 2500 doesn't.

Just caught up on this thread, @BrianB, dam thats awful news, have you inspected mobo cpu pins there so easy to bend, do ya have a magnifying glass so you can have a closer look. Again sorry to hear about your loss :(

Is that the nick to the top right corner?? Is there a break in the pcb track??! I had a mobo with a broken track and managed to repair it.

Do NOT put nail polish on until you have checked the nick(golden bit is the track, there like very thin copper ribbon which can be easily broken) and check them pins!

Dead cpu, i think that just put me off attempting this on my chip at any point ever now.

Sorry to hear of your dead cpu though. :(

As above though, keep trying any possible means of repair.
