*** Dell UltraSharp U2410 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor @ £447.99 inc VAT ***

Nope, i've had a few this last month ranging in quality.

Samsung F2380 was pant's but build quality was great, then this had a great panel but the pink tinting was really bad in gaming mode.

Think i'm going to give in and just buy a cheap TN and leave it at that

If you saw a "pink tint" only in gaming mode then that's NOT the green/pink tint issue people are complaining about on this thread. That's a separate uniformity issue which causes things like white backgrounds to appear very uneven in colour.. green on one side pink on the other etc.

If it's only in gaming mode then what you're actually complaining about is a wide gamut issue. This monitor has a very wide gamut - It can produce reds and greens far more vivid than an ordinary monitor. This is great, except most content is created in a standard RGB colour space and, until the day Windows implements an automatically colour managed desktop and Direct X, you're going to experience colours which look more red and green than they otherwise should in game mode, as that bypasses most image processing to reduce input lag.

You'll experience this with every single LCD monitor that has a greater gamut than standard sRGB, and that's going to happen more and more.. So hopefully Microsoft will do something more soon.

Yeah...i thought my amp actually did 1080p upscaling and so my res would be scaled down to 1080p but it turns out it's only a repeater so it just passes through the signal, although it stenghtens it to prevent lag. Cool so, I'll order this screen. The HDMI cables I have has been tested beyond official specs as well so that will be fine.

how annoying, OCUK were going to ship out my replacement tomorrow but they've gone out of stock. Wonder how long i'll be waiting now! Not quite the Dell on-site warranty experience I was looking forward to.

I only first noticed it in gaming mode, but you can also spot it while in SRGB and once i noticed it - it just started driving me nuts :(

But what about people that don't use Windows? I use a Mac, Windows and a 360 so the pink tint is a large problem for me.

I never read into the wide gamut side of things as i didn't really understand what the problem was, if i'd have known i would have avoided from the get go.

In the 360 you can't do anything unless the game developer added an option to compensate for wide gamut displays. On the Mac, the U2410 has a specific Gamma mode for using the Mac, although I think the new Snow Leopard release finally switches the expected default to 2.22 like everyone else uses. Anyway, the Mac has the same issue as Windows, but I'm pretty sure Safari is a colour managed application, so that should actually be free of the wide gamut issue.

It's something that'll be dealt with over the coming years. Basically newer screens can produce a wider range of colours than the old types, and right now we're in a transition zone where that's not always a good thing :)

That's fair enough, but it's enough of a problem for me to return the monitor and get a refund.

I'm going to go for a cheap one and get what i expect :D crap but least it will be worth it!

Well, a replacement arrived from Dell - completely free of the tint issue! So, problem solved, or it would be if it didn't have a lit green pixel on the bottom left. :( 4 monitors, 1 with dead red pixel, 1 with green lit, 1 with massive tint issues, 1 with milder tint issues. Is it too much to ask for a U2410 without dead pixels and free of noticeable tint? Right now it appears my answer is yes :( Worse, the Adobe/SRGB black level bug would require yet another screen exchange, which I personally wouldn't be prepared to do given the apparent dificulty of getting a panel without one issue or the other.

Why they'd allow a monitor out of the factory with a lit pixel is a good question. I guess they expect some people to put up with it, even though their own warranty says that's unacceptable and grounds for an exchange..

Btw - Anyone who's replaced a screen through Dell - Did they call you first to confirm delivery? They haven't called me once to confirm delivery - they just turn up at the door unannounced. Luckily someone was here, but it'd be nice if they'd advise they were intending to deliver something..

Yes Mkay! Dell are completely mad. A simple check on the production line for lit pixels and tint would save them a lot of money. What I want to know is if Dell then send them on to LG (panel manufacturer) for a refund?

By the looks of things they just keep re-sending them out until someone accepts one..

Oh. Time to give up, or will you go for #5? Will Dell keep replacing these screens ad infinitum?
No. There's a 30 day period where they will exchange for new. This, depending on the speed of turnaround, gives them about 4 chances to get it right before someone will likely eventually inform you that your expectations are above what they can deliver. I also returned the original for a refund, so technically this was chance number 2. This time the customer service guy was less pleasant than usual, but volunteered to send a replacement before I had a chance to fully think about it. This is genuinely the last chance though as it's more annoyance than I need.

Not that it'll probably make any difference to the outcome, but I think I'm going to post a thread about this, documented with images, over on the Dell forum and see what they say this time. Probably should have done that in the first place. The previous 2 tinted monitors were from the July batch, and this tint free (but with lit pixel) is from August. So they're apparently on to a new batch, and (just maybe) that's less prone to the tint issue.

What I can say is, even though the calibration report of the tinted screen is actually better than this replacement, I can tell you that the new screen not only has better consistency, but it's also visible on things like black and white images under sRGB mode (the other is tinted green in sRGB mode). Based on this I think it's safe to say the included calibration report is nothing short of "bloody useless" in terms of telling what's going on with these screens. As it stands it's more of a marketing gimmick and perhaps the money would be better spent on taking their quality control more seriously..

Alright, gonna give dell a call for a replacement. Btw MKay, Did you asked for a brand new sealed replacement?
They tend to automatically offer this during the first 30 days.

For future reference (in case I ever get brave enough to part with my money!), how do you tell which batch the screen is from? Presumably, it's on a sticker somewhere?
