Destiny 2... It's a coming!

I dont have a sauce for this sorry but it got posted on discord:

"With Destiny 2 coming out on PC, does peer-to-peer networking put players at risk of being cheated? Matt: The PC platform poses unique security challenges for Destiny 2, but our security Ninjas have spent several years building a plan for how to engage with this new and vibrant community. We have a variety of top-secret strategies to ensure that the life of a cheater in Destiny 2 PC will be nasty, brutish, and short. And, regardless of what platform you play on, all changes to your persistent character are communicated directly to our secure data center with no peer-to-peer interference."
"Wait, so we do have dedicated servers? Matt: We don't use that term, because in the gaming community, “dedicated servers” refers to pure client-server networking models. Destiny 2 uses a hybrid of client-server and peer-to-peer technology, just like Destiny 1. The server is authoritative over how the game progresses, and each player is authoritative over their own movement and abilities. This allows us to give players the feeling of immediacy in all their moving and shooting – no matter where they live and no matter whom they choose to play with. Why peer-to-peer? Are we trying to save money? Matt: Nope! We've invested heavily in new server infrastructure for Destiny 2, including using cloud servers for gameplay for the first time. We really believe this is the best model for all of Destiny 2's varied cooperative and competitive experiences. Engineering will always involve tradeoffs and cost-benefit analysis, but as a team we’ve got no regrets about the unique technology we’ve built for Destiny 2.(edited)

Wait what?! :P I did post this further up the page, its from the Bungie weekly update

Good article up on Bungie re networking. Looks like they have made some good changes coming from D1. https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/45919

Matt: Every activity in Destiny 2 is hosted by one of our servers. That means you will never again suffer a host migration during your Raid attempt or Trials match. This differs from Destiny 1, where these hosting duties were performed by player consoles and only script and mission logic ran in the data center. To understand the foundation on which we’re building, check out this Destiny 1 presentation from GDC. Using the terms from this talk, in Destiny 2, both the Mission Host and Physics Host will run in our data centers.

Wait, so we do have dedicated servers?

I think the next round of new information (especially for the PC version) will be at E3. Until then we're stuck twiddling our thumbs. I hate the lack of clarification on the PC version.

Yeah I just hope it is released this year. If it's a real lengthy delay I can see myself buying the PS4 version which is really annoying as I don't want to double dip, especially if I can't port my character over. Plus I want to cancel my PSN subscription.

I don't think they will mention DLCs at all, it is well known now that talking about DLC before release ticks everyone off (rightly so).

When some people read 'dedicated servers' they think of battlefield games where you look at a server browser and choose which one to connect to. For a game like Destiny that's not going to work. A bit like The Division, there are servers, as evidenced by server transfers, but you never connect to a specific game, you just click 'play'.

That's a big misunderstanding, nobody at all confuses dedicated servers for games listings. Lists on console gaming (where the majority of server concern has come from) has never ever been a thing. When players talk about dedicated servers they know that it means a separate server specifically to host games on, reducing the reliance on P2P which is nowhere near as steady. It doesn't matter if it's from listings or matchmaking. They know what dedicated servers are, and are very reasonable in their request for them.

I personally have no dog in the fight. If Destiny 2 used the exact same method as Destiny 1 (all P2P) that would have still been perfectly fine by me. The networking in D1 was incredibly solid, you could have boss fights with 6 players and 20+ enemies and it wouldn't feel laggy at all unless the host was downloading porn in Singapore or something. It had total trust in the client, yet gave all the important server tasks to Destiny servers (such as character info, drops, stats, etc).

Yeah seeing these statements is making me more confident it will be done right :) Roll on the beta!

Im guessing there has been no real news about a beta? I think @Mario is right though, we wont hear or see much more until e3. Which isn't too far away I don't think?

Official E3 timings are 13th-15th June so only a couple of weeks away but some announcements will no doubt be done prior so as not to get lost in the noise.

The Bungie weekly update has been delayed for a day, there appears to be a circumstantial announcement on the way. Could be pc related.

Are we actually excited for this? I haven't managed to play it on console, I was really looking forward to it pre launch but after it launched I just lost all interest as it seemed a bit... Idk... Not good.

I'm very excited for this. I ended up buying a PS4 to play the first game and it ended up being one of my most played games over the last few years. So now it is coming to my platform of choice I cant wait to cary on with my Guardian duties.

I'm biased as I love Destiny but I think the game is fantastic and well worth the attention it seems to get - which often drives people who dislike Destiny mad.

+1

Wasn't going to reply but I don't see the point of coming into a thread and baiting with that sort of comment? "Heard from X person that D1 was trash, didn't play it, why is there even a thread about D2 lul" People like different games, check out the info posted and then maybe beta when it releases?

Sums it up perfectly

I mean I could just discuss it on a discussion forum. I doubt I will play Destiny at this point unless it is required for Destiny 2, too many other games to play.

Why is this forum turning into such an echo chamber? People can't even think about tolerating an opinion that does not closely mirror their own.

Would you liken it to The Division at all, seems quite similar in the multiplayer team/loot/bullet sponge aspect if not theme and execution.
