DirectX 12

Nvidia Running Forza on their GPU was just a bit of a side swipe at AMD.

IMO it was done purely so they could have that little concession and make something of it.

Correct. No doubt MS were a bit peeved at AMD launching Mantle before DX12 was even announced.

I'd wager it'd be far harder for Nvidia to create support for an API they'll have no documentation on to support 4XX-7XX than it would be for AMD to get Mantle on their 6XXX (Which they haven't)

It does matter little, but I don't think for a minute DX12 is Mantle repackaged (I've also forgot to mention Forza getting ported, they'd have been working with DX12 before Mantle ever debuted in BF4........)

I think it only took them 4 months or so to port it over to dx12. I read that somewhere so no Bf4 was probably running on mantle long before Forza on dx12. I have not seen the Forza demo yet. Was it playable or just a running demo.

I bet nVidia has been working closely with MS on DX12 and this is why Forza was running onthe Titan Black. It will all come out in time

a titan black just for 60fps? I thought they would have played it using the igpu:p

no one would want/need amd/NVidia then

Exactly.

Its a console only game, it will never actually see Kepler Hardware

AMD alluded to the tension between MS, Game Developers and Hardware Developers right on stage.

MS want to push their Console ECO System, they don't want Desktop Gaming to get any better than it already is.
Mantle is a huge Fly in their soup.
Which is why no one should kid themselves that in 2 years DX12 WILL be all that, it might be, but its far from a given when its creators motives are for the XB1, not the PC.

That's how I see it as well, and personally even though I don't see mantle taking over it certainly give a good kick in the rear for both MS and the Khronos group.

Just at GDC NV, AMD, and Intel had a huge presentation regarding OpenGL, and eliminated Driver overhead for a maximum of 15 times the performance with tuning.

Even excluding gaming such performance increases would be brilliant for Professional OpenGL 3D work, from CAD to 3D Animation.

Everything has to start somewhere. We wouldn't be gaming like we are if people didn't invest in the future. Not sure why people are ridiculing DX12 (funnily enough, they all have AMD)? But you guys defended Mantle to the hilt when that was mentioned but DX12 is too slow... :D

I wonder how much performance is lost intentionally in other parts/software? ram/cpu ect

That would depend on what the software is doing and how it interconnects with the graphics API.

I don't ridicule, I just see a bigger picture than both Mantle and DX. More to the world than gaming. I want the best possible for all without locking them into any OS, or hardware. :)

If NV, AMD and Intel can develop OGL that would be fantastic.

But they have to work together, its no good if each of them want to abuse it to their own ends, proprietary lockouts have no place in it, it will not even get of the ground if they start messing on with it like that, it has 0 Developer uptake as it is, and never will unless it has universal full compatibility.

I mean the operating system itself, chipset drivers ect ect

do we really need cpu/gpu refreshes? or a good knuckle down on software tweaking/writing

quad cores and multithreads have been out years yet only a handful of games make use of it

intel/NVidia/amd/microsoft are gonna drag their heels to justify us all buying new tech and keeping folks in jobs

Zero developer uptake?

So I guess the fact that it's the world's standard in the majority of 3D work is no uptake?
Or that Unreal 4, CryEngine, Source 2, and Unity use it as well?

Granted i'm OT with that, i have Linux and Steam on it, i can't find any game that i really like, Team Fortress 2 is ok, a Zombi one that i can't even remember the name of is fun in small doses.

I think it would be far more relevant with the likes of Crysis, Battlefield....

for me at least, and i don't think i'm alone, its just something a bit different occasionally on the side, for a lot of others its not even that.
