DiRT Rally Hits Steam Early Access

Well it is a sim, and real life rally drivers only give like 80%/90% of there limit on stages, as if they give 100% they almost always total there car, its best racing sim out there period, and gives great satisfaction, most of the best stage times are when your giving it 70%/80% of your limits.

There's just no room for error, you can't play and have fun, it's either perfect run or upside down in a ditch.

Well, there's hardly any room for error in actual rallying as well. I know what you mean because the game frustrates the hell out of me at times but I genuinely did improve and can go faster/make less mistakes.

I still suck compared to the top players but if you stick with it long enough, you'll get a feel for the tracks/cars and will intuitively know when to go all out/slow down and how to steer the car with subtle hanbrake/throttle control effectively. It'll help you avoid making to many mistakes or more or less recover without landing in a ditch when you do make one (not always, obviously). It's a lot of fun IMO; the feel of the cars, the engine sounds and just sliding about corners kicking up loads of dirt.

Just go slowly and learn the tracks/cars bit by bit or simply drop it for now if you absolutely can't get into it and don't feel like playing any more. It's a pretty punishing game and won't appeal to everyone.

Ok, abandoned the classic mini **** in the career mode and jumped straight in a 205 T16 and had a bash at Pikes Peak, this is more like it. I like to set the car up soft and loose (Solberg style!) and let it move around, may not be fastest times but it's more fun.

Like you may have realised career mode isn't the be all and end all. I have barely completed any competition races. I just simply pick a car I fancy. Pick a track. And play about on it. Don't care for achievements or anything just yet.

for the first few section you can literally do it without lifting :p you just need the right lines and gearing.

i have some weird snake like gearing which looks wrong but it works.:D

I don't find throttle, brake or steering inputs very intuitive on a controller, doesn't make for great times but at least I can have some sort of fun with it compared to trying regular rally stages.

The 205 is all over the place, I can't nail down any sort of set-up on it that allows me full control.

Back to reality, can't drive any of the proper rally stages, total guff, and after all that driving on gravel Pikes Peak the bloody career challenge is all crap tarmac that is impossible to drive on. FML.

Sat the other day and fiddled until I got the setup exactly right for the wheel. God I've been missing out. :D

Are there any proper car mods out there? We have got quite a decent selection, but more is always better (if they're of decent quality)!
