Dumb question but why should I buy a 5870 if the 4870 X2 is the better card?

Thought the 5870 is supposed to be as good as a 4870x2? very disappointing if not.

Are they even aiming for high end performance? last time they said they were going more for middle of the road and only using the 4870x2 to compete with Nvidia's best cards.

Think i'll go for the 5850, the 4850 started at around £110 and it now like £75.

The 4870 started way higher than that and it now like £90-100..so that is like £70-80 down the drain..because when i buy it i like to sell it for £20-30 less so it doesn't break my wallet after 1 year of use.

The 5850 will hold it's value better then when new cards come out i'll sell it lose £20-30 and then buy a new card, best to wait 2-4 weeks or more for the prices to drop i think or wait for nvidia.

Good luck with that.

I'm not sure how you plan on only losing £20-30 on a card after a year.

You said it yourself, 4800s are almost half of what they were last year so how do you plan on only losing £30 if you're gonna wait a year?

I wouldn't mind selling my 4850s for about £100 ;).

The 4850 was £120 for a 512MB, you can get 1GB ones for sub £80 which skews your comparison a bit.

You're in the wrong game then son.

Going by the prices the HD5870 lowest price will be £220 on launch day and the HD5850 will be around £140 I'm thinking when its launched....

Fancy myself a HD5870 :D

Not sure where you get £220 from fella, the prices Ive seen say $400 for a 5870, when you convert that and add vat you get ~£280.

what does it matter what the cooler looks like you can't see it anyways normally :P unless the PC sits on your desk

Mine actually sits side on on a glass display shelf. Also has a custom side window. Motherboard is also inverted so the cooler faces up - for all the world to see. So yeah, I'd quite like it to look nice :-)

Not a major issue though as it'll be dumped for a water cooling block as soon as EK make one ;-)

It's based on the 5850 being $199 and the 5870 being $299.

Realistically, there's no reason they should be any more.

Why would the 5870X2 be $599 but the 5870 be $399? They're shooting themselves in the foot doing that.

We know ATi aren't intending on releasing cards any more expensive than $599 as they have stated this themselves.

So that leaves $299 for the 5870 and judging by past releases, $199 for the 5850.

If they turn out to be different, I don't get why ATi would be stupid enough to price a 5870 at $399 and the X2 at $599 unless they're planning to up the X2 price point to $799, and if they do then  LAME.
