vegan or not this is a society problem

I try to cook fresh when I can and keep away from ready made foods where possible but I work often from 8am to 7pm. if I am in the office I have to drive too and from work as well so that is another 1hr 20 out of my day
then I actually want to see my kid before he goes to bed, and then at that point the last thing I want to do is start a full on cook. (we always have a bunch of home cooked curries and chillies in the freezer which helps)
usually we don't eat till around 8pm after the lad goes to bed (which in itself is not great health wise) and then after that sue me I want some down time.
weekends are a bit different but I don't think it's right to chastise people for not being able to do full on cooks . My wife is similar. for us at least the idea of 1 bread winner and 1 stay at home parent/house keeper is not an option so (unlike when I was a kid with my mum at home) it's not so easy to have wholesome home cooked food all the time

I come from a culture where we go to the shops 2/3x a week if not more. We buy stuff as we need it. And we cook fresh 90% of the time. Of course we don't always do it. I mean fish fingers and so on are in the freezer. We still have some biscuits from time to time etc... But reducing the UPF is so important.

As you say it's a societal thing. We've got used to bulk buying in the supermarket, you can tell as small market towns, greengrocers and butchers are disappearing. :( this is why I miss the Med a lot as that culture is still very much in existence.

As a race we've been processing foods for 100s of thousands of years but the ultra processed foods is more about profit for the supermarkets and food manufacturers, and you basically add chemicals and so on to substitute the original food, it's cheaper to mass produce stuff without the original product or high quality product.

All I urge people to do is look at the ingredient list and if there are multiple syllable words , have a think about it. I mean some prepackaged foods aren't ultra processed, but just being mindful about what you're eating.

yes processed vegan food is as bad possibly worse in some cases than non vegan but i think most of us on here eat fresh, my ninja is indispensable , obviously i have the odd cba night now and again where a vegan pizza is on the menu.
.I think we all do. Problem is societal and the big FMCG industry that are all after profit.

Heck even bread from the supermarket is awful for you.

And people that buy low fat or sugar free stuff like that are even worse for you!

I eat lots of nuts and chick peas and i don't feel my protein is lacking in fact my muscle mass has only gone up and i only use a 16kg kettle bell per arm ,its not something i over think about as its easy to get enough protein, i do make an effort to get the omegas and the b group vits

yeah i have a bread maker but those pre made packs are still 80p plus and full of chemicals, i need to do it from scratch

Yes but you're educated and not blindly following a lifestyle for the sake of it.

Chickpeas are the best though - can't get enough of them! As are lentils.

For me I need between 3.6-4k calories a day so it gets tough without taking in fatty meats and eggs for me. I know it's possible but having been brought up with it (and having done some work in an abattoir) I feel comfortable with my choices and do eat mindfully.

I do meat free twice a week though. I know it's not a big deal but I quite enjoy seeking new recipes.

as I understand it goats produce milk all year round with or without breeding.

edit... actually I stand corrected. I always thought goats produced milk without breeding but a Google shows I was wrong. my apologies

(it is just that they make so much milk that there is too much just for the young so can have young and still have milk left over so it doesn't need to be killed).

The 'kids' will still be killed in the goat industry just like baby male calfs are killed in the cow milk industry.

When I was in full training I needed between 4500 and 5000. Between working, training and family life that was a huge challenge for me. I think if I was on a vegan diet I’d have needed to add kendal mint cake.

You must be a pretty solid chap on 4000 per day.

like I said I was wrong.... although one would think there could be a market for "happy" goat milk for those who worry about animal husbandry but don't want to go vegan or even vegi

Not sustainable though is it because what do you do with the kids/calfs? Theres no nice way to exploit animals.

Similar height but you have a good 10kg on me. A solid arse 10kg by the sounds of it. It’s interesting that we are reasonably close in size (10-12%~) but our calorific needs differ by 20%~

Between 1974 to 1979 I used to live a lot in Nigeria and weekly my Mum would take me to the Abbatoir to watch our meat being killed and harvested.
When I say Abbatoir it was a piece of ground by the side of the road and she would never trust buying meat without seeing the whole process.
That should have put me off for life but it didn't.

I guess it depends on activity? A BJJ session easily burns over 800 cals and I do that 3x a week.

Also it depends on metabolism and general genetics. I have reasonably low body fat for my age and weight, muscle burns more calories than fat!

Do people “own” dogs?

I dont think so no, they're a companion, like part of the family. Hence why I don't agree with breeding dogs for profit.

Just look at the dog thread for other examples of the issues with breeding animals for us.

That being said its a bit of a grey area for me personally because at least dogs are not being bred to be exploited or stabbed for food (apart from dog fighting etc.)
