It's fair to say that i'm a classic Who fan. I've dipped in and out of the newer series over the last few years but overall it's not for me. Despite this, they're doing something right as it's introduced a new generation of kids to the show, even if I feel the adult appeal is thin.
I'm very much oldschool in my Who tendencies. I'm a Pertwee man first and foremost but have a huge fondness for all the classic series, from the 60s right through to the late 80s. I remember the Dr Who museum in Llangollen which is long gone I believe. My first tatt was easy; my favourite band. My second tatt took me longer to decide upon. I knew I wanted my favourite video game on there so worked the Half Life logo in to it, and for Film/TV I had briefly pondered a Transformers or Twin Peaks design, but quickly realised that Doctor Who essentially defined my childhood. If there was a single show that swallowed me completely up it was Who. So then I was torn between the usual signifiers; A Dalek, a Tardis, a Sea Devil maybe?
I settled on the seal of Rassilon because it's something most hardcore Who fans recognise, but its celtic undertones would suit a more general celtic tattoo design. The tatt you see in the picture above was semi designed by me; my original design which was far less tribal was rejected by my tatt artist as being too industrial and too 80s, not to mention too intricate (perhaps there are some tattoo artists out there who would argue that anything can be penned on flesh) so he re-worked the interconnecting curls that connect the two main symbols (Rassilon and Half Life) with a more contemporary tribal theme. I've always been dismissive of generic tribal tattoos, mainly because most people who have them A) Aren't in a tribe, and B) Picked the designs arbtitrarily because they think they emphasise their biceps and make them look cool. I of course don't actually need a tattoo to look cool, because i'm already a total badass, and a very modest one at that. I accepted a compromise with the final design as the tribal elements merely join up the centerpieces, which are of course not some generic rubbish picked off the parlour wall, but rather are something that has significance for me.
