Doctor Who

Yes!! This is the kinda chat we should be having in the Doctor Who thread! So happy reading these messages rather than randoms chiming in with another negative slam.

I mean apart from folks posting half naked pictures of themselves. Are you quite possibly the only genuine doctor who fan to have a tattoo?

So what's the backstory to the resillion seal?

It's fair to say that i'm a classic Who fan. I've dipped in and out of the newer series over the last few years but overall it's not for me. Despite this, they're doing something right as it's introduced a new generation of kids to the show, even if I feel the adult appeal is thin.

I'm very much oldschool in my Who tendencies. I'm a Pertwee man first and foremost but have a huge fondness for all the classic series, from the 60s right through to the late 80s. I remember the Dr Who museum in Llangollen which is long gone I believe. My first tatt was easy; my favourite band. My second tatt took me longer to decide upon. I knew I wanted my favourite video game on there so worked the Half Life logo in to it, and for Film/TV I had briefly pondered a Transformers or Twin Peaks design, but quickly realised that Doctor Who essentially defined my childhood. If there was a single show that swallowed me completely up it was Who. So then I was torn between the usual signifiers; A Dalek, a Tardis, a Sea Devil maybe?
I settled on the seal of Rassilon because it's something most hardcore Who fans recognise, but its celtic undertones would suit a more general celtic tattoo design. The tatt you see in the picture above was semi designed by me; my original design which was far less tribal was rejected by my tatt artist as being too industrial and too 80s, not to mention too intricate (perhaps there are some tattoo artists out there who would argue that anything can be penned on flesh) so he re-worked the interconnecting curls that connect the two main symbols (Rassilon and Half Life) with a more contemporary tribal theme. I've always been dismissive of generic tribal tattoos, mainly because most people who have them A) Aren't in a tribe, and B) Picked the designs arbtitrarily because they think they emphasise their biceps and make them look cool. I of course don't actually need a tattoo to look cool, because i'm already a total badass, and a very modest one at that. I accepted a compromise with the final design as the tribal elements merely join up the centerpieces, which are of course not some generic rubbish picked off the parlour wall, but rather are something that has significance for me.

It is such a huge shame the revamp doesn't hold as much appeal to the classic who fans. I love when a whovian chimes in with a current day episode's reference to the lore and I can delve into researching the connection and learning more about the history.

I think Eccleson may have caused more of a blow in that regard than he realises. He left because of the restrictions involved in playing a character with such a deep history and such a heavy fan base, so much so that I think the writers are understandably scared to touch anything involving it.

Hey! Don't lump us proper Doctor Who fans in with the nay-sayers on here :p

If that was why Eccleston went (I've heard plenty of other reasons), then more fool him. Any long-running series has an established history, be it James Bond, Batman, Spiderman or NCIS...I don't hear Daniel Craig complaining about all the fighting and sleeping with beautiful women he has to suffer as Bond :D

A good episode. Is that it for Clara then?

I didn't watch today - have they finally got rid of her?

Finally!

Thank god for that if true - personally I feel Capaldi has some serious potential in elevating this series to something really good but is held back by incompetent support characters (not the people themselves, but the characters they are told to portray).

I find it annoying because I really enjoy watching him playing the main role, but the support characters are all awful and ruining the show for me.

after i heard Matt Smith was the doctor i was like ohh nooes he's too young, but after one episode i was hooked, he was amazing. this new guy whom i've never heard of, nor never seen in anything is kinda a step backwards, like a poor authoritarian John Pertwee.

the scripts were awful, childish and exagerrated, i'm a simpleton and i could've written better.

i did enjoy the last two episodes only because the fox outta Green Wing was in it :)

Glad the season is over, it's been by far the worst since the reboot.

You did see series 7 right? :(
Possibly the worst thing that's ever been on TV :p

Anyway, not a bad episode. Perhaps a bit touchy-feely, but I guess you can forgive it that due to the events within it.
Apart from a couple of poop episodes, I've been pretty happy with this season.
Capaldi is all kinds of brilliant and I'm looking forwards to more of his grumpy shenanigans.

I liked Clara when she was with Matt Smith's Doctor but the character just became really annoying once the Doctor changed, it does indeed feel like time for a new companion.
