The picture cut out for 3 or 4 seconds just before he hit the titanic - we saw some fingers or something picking up a ring (maybe), was there anything important happening just before that?

brilliant series finale(sp) loved every minute, david's certainly getting into the role far more than he did in the second series.

hope martha comes back for the forth, i did read she had no plans to stop playing her yet...

I'm guessing that the fingers were those of his wife, and that the ring stored his "essence" or something similar.

He could have instructed (hypnotised?) her to kill him, to avoid becoming the doctor's prisoner.
