Long standing Utd fan here. First matches was under Big Fat Ron and his amazing suits. Of course all the Scouse, Blue Noses' Lids Yewnited and other ABU's will be saying Moyes must stay as things will only get progressively worse as we did under Dogleash, Benitez, 10 a penny manager who was at Spurs for four weeks etc. We have had our day in the sun and of course the press are going to take advantage of this as will opposing fans
Should Moyes be given more time ?
Yes he should be given more time and a little bit of perspective is needed. Professional Football is a unique bubble. You get plucked out of the real world at the age of 8 maybe 9 and then get thrown back in when your 35-40 if you are lucky with pretty much limited social skills and more importantly real world experience.
Pretty much everything went through SAF from managing the players (Kicking up the arse or putting the arm around the shoulder) Being told daily how important they are, Training at certain times, training in a certain way, Speaking to the media in a certain way and all of a sudden thats been turned upside down. The people they would goto if they had a problem with SAF are probably not at the club anymore.
I would liken it to anyone elses daily routine. You work 9-5 wear a suit have lunch at 12 - 13 and you know what you can get away with. Your new boss wants you to work 5-9, take Weds and Thursday off and work weekends, lunch break is at a different time.
The players are hard wired to work, think, eat, train, play in a different way that what David Moyes wants them to. Essentially bar Mata and Fellaini it's still Fergies team.
Major Surgery has been needed for years not just now
The key position for any team is Midfield nowadays. Go back ten maybe fifteen years and the most prized asset on the transfer market was the old number 9 who would bag 20 goals a season plus. Its no secret that our midfield in some parts has over performed (Carrick) but more importantly not been strengthened when its been needed the most. It's the engine room that allows your top three or four attackers depending on formation to perform. Look at Chelsea on Monday night. Absolutely dominated Citys midfield. While you can argue that Moyes and Woodward could have done better in the summer, some of the blame has to go back to SAF for not strengthening with a decent CM a few years back to take some of the strain and pressure off Carrick.
While we are at it, some players have just not developed as they should have done, Cleverly and Smalling spring to mind.
All in all Moyes should be allowed to build a team and then it's fair to judge. You look at the Mata transfer and you can see as clear as day the thought process behind it. A player who can retain the ball, play in numerous positions up front. Has one of the highest pass completion ratios, he can speak perfect English, hes humble. He could play in the number 10 role if Rooney did go in the summer. No manager has the right to make the perfect signing and get it right every time. Just ask Jose when he resigned Matic
But I like what he has done with the Mata deal
Building a team is not about who you bring in, it's also sometimes about who and how you manage the old guard out.
