E-Scooter discussion after fatal collision

Saw someone on one the other day come straight off a cycle lane and right across the middle a crossroads without looking at all. Missed getting hit by inches.

After a few bad incidents (where they also aren't insured I guess) there will be another policy change. If they go straight across the front of a car and get run over, they will end up paying for damages to the car from their hospital bed.

It's a good idea to license them. But I wonder at the moment how many people know they need one?

There is at least one young guy around my area with one. He seems to go on and off the pavement, which isn't a problem here as we have wide pavements.

I think there needs to be a general awareness campaign for young people to look where they are going. I saw a kid looking at her phone the other day and just walked out in to the road. Nothing was coming. Everyone should instinctively look to check.

Ride a bike and you'll see this every day. The worst culprits are Mums with pushchairs who are looking at their phone and think it's ok to push the pushchair straight into the road in the bit where cyclists will be.

I had one such knobhead step out into the cycle lane without looking and just stop dead, not with a pram though she was just engrossed in her phone. Took great pride in knocking the phone flying out of her hand as I went past. :D

Actually your area is the worst - London Road and then up Trent Valley Road and then Collin Road

I know it's deceptively long and steep but instead of turning down Colin Road and up Harpfields have you considered going all the way up Trent Valley Road to Penkhull and then left at the roundabout by the Church? That downhill section of Newcastle Lane from Penkhull to the Hospital is great fun.

Youtube is full of people crashing these things all over Europe. Most of them on the pavement or on crossings. People aren't looking where they are going, they can't control them, the brakes on them are terrible. There are a few with people stepping out of shops and wiping them out as they go by.

Tell you what, why not go the whole hog and cycle up Penkhull New Road :)
Coming down it is bad enough.

Illegal but no one enforces it. Not until they crash and injure someone anyway. I've seen them riding right by police cars in town.

Escooters are a menace if you live in a student city, almost constantly looking out for them when I'm on foot

I'm talking about the ones laying all over the place you can rent, Could you imagine being blind? these scooters must make life so difficult

surprised people just just steal the motors and batteries tbh

Really? We have two universities and multiple campuses within a a mile or three and I've not had a single incident.
loads of people have been banned from driving for 12months + for riding around on them well over the drink driving limit and being a nuisance.

people seem to like riding them on footpaths here, seems they cut out once in the park atleast

I saw my first proper e-Scooter a couple of days ago and funnily enough on my street.
I cycle all around the place and they don't seem to be a thing in Stoke.
Yes I have seen kids riding them while out with their parents for a walk but never seen an adult on one.

Where I live have been running a Bird's e-scooter 12 month trial since last September. They are everywhere, driving around you see the them left on the roadside, bus stops or just random places. Think it’s £1 and then 15p per minute to use them via an app.

They seem a great way to around in the warmer months. I certainly see my son using one to get to school and back when he’s old enough.

There's a guy who lives in one of the new houses where the Victoria Ground used to be that has one of the Xiaomi ones. Comes past me when I'm walking to Sainsburys and it's a right nippy thing. Professional fella too, fully suited and with a briefcase.

This is the problem though,
My work colleague lives around 1.5 miles away from work and he had an eScooter rank just down from his house and another rank over the road from the hospital.
He came in one morning thrilled that he had spent around £1.30 getting to work and couldn't wait to get back on one to go home.
He was never able to get another one again.
