*** Elden Ring ***

Thanks for confirming - really tempted to go for that monitor then!

It's why I'm going to get the LG 42" OLED when it comes out. My current monitor is 3840x1600, looks amazing, but with the 4k OLED, I can still have UW with an even larger screen and because it shuts those pixels down, in a dark room you won't even see the rest of the monitor so you can still get the same UW experience when you fancy it.

This game has piqued my interest although I don't know anything about it at all. Would saying this game is more action and less talking be a fair summation? I'd rather play Ghouls and Ghosts than Oblivion/Skyrim - all the talking bores the **** out of me. I also hate grinding to level up. I played Genshin Impact on my phone and it wasn't for me. Is this game similar to that?

If it's anything like Dark Souls or Sekiro there will be very little dialogue. Any lore there is in the Souls games is usually delivered through quite cryptic references scattered around the world. In those games, too, there is no required grinding, unless you feel the need to level up.

The games are primarily about player skill and adapting to the combat. Completing the Souls games at level 1 is a goal some players like to pursue to test their mettle. I would imagine a lot of players will grind a bit to level to try to make the boss fights a bit easier, but character level usually takes a backseat to how well you as a player have adapted to the game mechanics.

Thanks for that. Just the info I was after. Are there any cheaper/older games that are similar to Elden Ring? I don't game any more so paying £50 for a game is a big no no for me (but the game does look amazing). I might pick it up if it ever goes in the steam sale in a year or two.

edit - I might pick-up Dark Souls.

Dark souls 1-3
Sekiro

Yep, for a new player to the series who wants what you seem to, I would probably recommend Sekiro.

My personal favourite is Dark Souls 1 for its atmosphere and gameworld, but that is quite old now and Sekiro looks much nicer and plays smoother and snappier. It's much more like an action game and less an RPG. If you don't want the leveling elements it is arguably the most appropriate, since whilst you can grind levels in DS 1-3 if you want to, in Sekiro you can't grind for more power in any meaningful way becasue the most impactful upgrades are locked behind game progress rather than experience points.

It is really quite hard, though. The final boss for me was harder than anything in any of the Dark Souls games. In general I think the difficulty of the Souls games is a bit overstated, but I found the last chap in Sekiro a major challenge.

Thanks for the Sekiro recommendation but I'm not really into Samurai stuff. But I will check out the Dark Souls series.

Are cdkeys a legit place to buy a game code?

This, I love playing at my PC as I can do much longer sessions, on the sofa, I can game maybe 2 to 4 hours before I fancy just watching a film. That being said, I did boot up Bioshock on the PS5 last night for a sofa session and it was glorious!

cdkeys have been fine for me.

Sekiro is worth picking up in a steam sale (where it drops to £25).

Forget being put off by the samurai stuff, it's a solid action game with a steep but satisfying learning curve.

Think I might play it through again before Elden ring now lol
