*** Elden Ring ***

Hot on the heels of launching with the mod to retain runes, I've started making a backup of the save file before traversing the mist and other known battles where I know I'll have to repeat hard won battles I've already fought to get there.

I wish the game had facilities for this - I mean a simple implementation of multiple game saves like The Witcher 3 - it would make such difference.

Currently level 29, I've done most of the caves in the Limgrave area, now I'm just cleaning up the bosses, to level myself up before progressing to margit. Getting use to the movement now. I'm no longer as twitchy, when the enemies wind up.

My best advice for any and all souls games. Death is not a punishment, its a mechanic. Accept death and use it to experiment and hone your understanding of enemy attacks and combos.

I envy you so much for only now just having your first experience lol

I'm quite glad that for all the bosses I've done so far, the boss run has been short compared to what I remember from Demon Souls. More time to spend on the actual boss itself.

Leonine Misbegotten, is the hardest boss I've beaten so far. Well over 20 attempts to take him down. Also, I'm certain he has two, two hit combo attacks that simply cannot be perfectly dodged.

Roll away first attack, roll into him on the second. If I remember correctly, I could be wrong. Apologies in advance for lost souls :D

I completed this tonight after approx 150 hours and I was at level 175 when I finished - it's fair to say I took the advice to throughly explore each area to the extreme. I absolutely loved exploring that world and trying to uncover it's secrets. I also really enjoyed the vast majority of the combat. There were some bosses towards the end of the game that were really frustrating, but some were also great fun as well. I probably was over-levelled for quite a few and took them out in no time, which probably meant I missed out on some good battles. It is definitely one of my favourite ever games. It just clicked with me in so many ways.

All that being said, I can also understand a lot of the criticism. I bought the official guide and used that on some of the quest lines - I honestly dont know how I would have completed some of them without it - some of the solutions or next steps in certain quests didnt make logical sense and I would never have stumbled upon some of the answers. I think having some of these in the game is understandable and probably welcomed, it just seems like the majority of them were like this. Some of the bosses are just cheap and it is really frustrating. They have massive AOE atttacks and could melt my health bar in seconds - usually when I have a Rune Arc equipped!

The game is huge though - even after spending all those hours in the game I know that there are several questlines that I have missed. At least I have an excuse to start NG+!

I had never played a souls game before Elden Ring. Loved it. It’s just what I wanted in terms of challenging. Once I stopped getting frustrated at not being able to run through at the same pace I do in most other games, and actually accepted slowing down and doing things differently, it was great. You have to adapt because if you don’t, you will give up. I got destroyed by the first knight in the starting area on horse back and thought “now I understand what people mean about the difficulty in these kinds of games, I must be crap if this isn’t even the first boss, I’m done”. When I realised you have to choose your battles wisely, go away and level up and then come back and it will be easier (apart from a few) the penny dropped and I started exploring instead of dying over and over because I was under levelled.

I finally beat rennala queen of the full moon!!! It took a total of about 1 hour 45 mins of just constantly trying to beat her.

I was underleveled in terms of vigor (around level 21 for vigor), so if I took the full brunt of her attacks, it would wipe my health from full. Why didn't I go and level up? Because I'm stubborn :D .

Time to explore the rest of Liurnia and level up

I'm level 80 - what's the best weapons and armour I should be aiming for? I think I might be held back as I'm using...

Lordsworn's Greatsword +15
Icerind Hatchet +5
Diggers Staff +14

For the armour, I can't see any way to upgrade it...

Banished Knight Helm
Banished Knight Gauntlets
Banished Knight Greaves
Vagabond Knight Armour

Any tips..?

to find the best weapon it depends on your play style and stats. What damage stat have you been speccing into? Str, dex, int, faith, arc?

I don’t know about armour, I’m still mostly using my starting gear as that allows me to roll.

I can finally start watching carbot animations series on Elden ring. The jokes don’t make sense unless you’ve played the game.
