England: What went wrong? (serious discussion) **SPOILERS**

Looks like Italy are going to be the only favourite to win their qf  (and lets face it Boom,Italy are rubbish :p )

therefore as the worst team left,it seems a given that Italy are going to win the WC :D

Defoe.....Sven sent him home ?

I would have liked to see Robbie Fowler there now, as he found a bit of form end of season.

These should both have gone.

We took:

Owen ...... been injured most of season.

Rooney ........ recovering from broken foot

Crouch ........ did OK but a bit out of his depth

Walcott ......... never played a premiership match and now never played in the world cup ! wtf

Been saying the above since squad was selected.

Im not really a gerrard fan either as he hoofs it over the bar most games.

What went wrong? Svens choice of squad and his tactics although I don't think FIFA have helped. They seem more than happy to penalise any kind of legitimate tackle but let dives and cheating go unpunished. Our players, most noticeably Gerrard and Terry, didn't look like they wanted to make any kind of hard challenge, for fear of a booking or worse, and that's been one of our strong points for years. Unfortunately, the game seems to have changed from a game played by hard nuts to a game played by diving cheating fairies :(

Well anyways, I'm exstatic - couldn't be happier to see England go down on a nother Penalty shootout like Euro 2004 - very entertaining viewing!

Oh well, least we made it to the quarter finals, cant be said of your splendid team...

Just seen Beckham and Gerrard on ITV with a quick interview. Stevie G's face just broke my heart! He looked so disheartened its hard to convey what he must be feeling!

i dont feel sorry for him at all, Gerrard has always been overated, he has one decent game out of five, he always plays like that, thank god people have started seeing this now.

Him and Lampard simply aint good enough at international level

Looking at the BBC feed, we had plenty of chances we just couldn't finish :(

Rooneys sending off, well, the pushing was the read card, otherwise no way was that a sending off, he was fighting for the ball, well done man on that front but otherwise gotta calm down son.

We fought hard IMO after Rooneys sending off, Penilties, well more practice, we just arn't as good as ze Germans.

Hopefully the new Manager can build on what Sven has done and build up this half decent squad.

Come on guys, top 8 countries. Not bad eh?

CR.

Gerrard is a fantastic player, dont see how he can be overrated? maybe he aint delivered in an England shirt but he is quality.

dont get me wrong, he is good, but no where near as good as people say he is. Compare him with someone like Matt Le Tisser (spelling?), he is nothing

I think that Carrick is in a diffrent league than Gerrard. Gerrard gives away too much of the ball, doesnt create nothing either, but he does tend to score wonder goals (which everyone just remembers)

Well I'm as patriotic as they come but I do feel sorry for you tonight (Edit: to avoid confusion I'm Scottish) . The Rooney incident was harsh, I thought he'd get booked for the push, the stamping looked like six of one, half a dozen of the other to me.

I'm not sure why Ronaldo's being singled out, he wasn't the only Portugese player in the referee's vicinity. And if I remember correctly Lampard was asking for someone to be booked in the Ecuador game so what goes around comes around. Not brilliant, not sporting, but they were all at it :(

You actually played better after Rooney had gone though, probably unlucky not to win it with some of the chances you made. I thought Crouch played well, held the ball and linked the midfield well. Hargreaves was immense, Gerrard and Lampard were nowhere, both the Coles looked sharp and dangerous.

Watched the replay of the Rooney incident several times over and I can't honestly see how that was a red.

Rooney was all tangled up in the players legs, and had his back to the player when his foot went down.

If anything it was a free kick in Englands favour for the original foul on Rooney, and at worst a yellow card for the push on Ronaldo.

We haven't played well, we had years to prepare and nothing's changed, we are a quarter-final team and no more.

Rooney's agressive reaction was stupid, that was his fault, he shouldnt even be giving the referee the option to red card, and like Mr Waddle says Enland simply arent good enough. That said this latest display was the best they ahd performed in this World Cup.
