England: What went wrong? (serious discussion) **SPOILERS**

Tell you what i'm looking forward to Svens autobiography which they reckon will be out in 07 (he's gagged till then apparently) theres a million questions i'd like to know wtf he was thinking.

Why take Walcott then not play him?

Why cant he see that Beckhams a gloryfied set piece taker these days?

Why didnt he show any balls at all till he was about to leave?

When he went sneaking off talking to Chelsea & Man U what was he playing at?

Ulrika, Nancy or Faria? ;)

the thing what got to me was in all the press meetings, they seemed hardly bothered about their performance and just reeled various sayings and still didnt improve

also im going to stick my neck out and say this, at the end of the sven is nothing more than a confidence trickster and a sweet talker. he conned that crap old boys at the fa that was he was a superb manager with a great talent when he was rank average, still hes clever than he looks because he got paid a kings ransom to do it.

fat face barwicks head should roll for this!

ITV playing an England montage to Johnny Cash's Hurt way to make me even more depressed :(

Got to be said though that from the looks on those guys faces at the end you cant say they didnt care about the result. The problem is more with the set up of the team by the management than the passion of the players.

It would have been great to be able to bring on someone like Darren Bent - decent in the air, fast and dangerous. Alas, we only had the option of Crouch and Walcott. Walcott would have ended up being bullied by the likes of Cavalho, and whilst Crouch seemed to hold the ball up reasonably well when he came on, he's just not the right player.

Here's my 2pence worth

- FA for sticking with Erickson when he showed at the last world cup he wasn't up to the job, has his favourites, can't motivate, can't make big decisions.

- Erickson - simply not up to the job.

- The Media, esp. Talk Sport! They have hyped up all the England Players and over-rated them by about 10%.

- Too many foreign players in the Premiership - they make many English
players look better than they are.

- The Players themselves - there're just not good enough.

As much as people rave about JT i think rio has been the best defender for us this tournament. But the both of them are world class and there's not many that come close.
Totally agree, Rio, just like in 2002 has been absolutely top drawer (unless you're the bias sports writer of that abysmal paper, The Mirror) and, in my opinion, his performances totally eclipsed those of John Terry.

And as for the major reason for failure:

-The Wags (Wives and Girlfriends), they should have been left at home, the players have a job to do, they are too busy shacking up with their wives, stupid management decision.

What, ferdinand's distribution was woefull. The reason he was supposed to be worth 30 million was because he could play a bit, bring the ball out from the back. All he did in englands games was panic and hump it.

Interviewed this week he said england needed to stop banging it long. Today he banged it long at any opportunity.

Maybe thats sven. Personally I dont think rio is half the player he was before his ban.

I may not be England supporter but I would love to see them go through.

However, I'm not at all impressed at the way England are playing and I'm tired of too much hype the media have displayed England. I do not like false hype. Media especially the papers have shown the wrong attiude to Rooney's foot injury, it's as if England's World Cup success is dependant on his present, despite that he haven't scored goal for England for long time.

I wasn't convinced at all with England 's performance throughout this tournament and for me, it was a matter of time before they'll be out of World Cup.

They played far too cautious and also far too awkwardly. I see this in every game England played. Take a look at France vs Spain recently, did you see how much hunger their players were. This is what England are missing! I think they were trying to play more professional but it's not what I wanted to see.

They should be play with some risks like France and Spain did, I would rather see them lost 3-2 to portugal than going out from penalty. Why? Because if you are 3-2 down, your team have scored 2 goals so it's always likely that your team may score another. Today, I couldn't see England going to score, even with Rooney on because they were being far too cautious, I knew that even when they were bidding their time for penalty shoot-out, they would be out because they were too cautious, therefore too nervy for penalty. You see, Hargreaves was playing bit risky, not being too careful yet he was the one that able to score in penalty shoot-out.

For Rooney or Beckham, why should I care about them...I can't be bothered with them as long as the team are playing in great organisation. Poor organisation, as Real Madrid have shown, forget about winning trophies.

Rooney didn't scored or made much difference but I was under the impression that he could make a great midfielder. Despite send off, it had somehow made England playing better, it was because Sven had to thrown in Lennon, who wanted to go forward with hunger. I'm surprised at some people blaming Rooney for England's failure to go semi-final, I don't think Rooney's present would make any difference to whether England go through or not, it was all down to players' lack of hunger, poor organisation and team formation, especially with Rooney in front.

In fact, I would take in anyone with hunger to play in place of any big names. Owen Hargreaves and Lennon have showed hunger and they threatened Portugal's defence which many players like Beckham or Lampard have failed to do so. What I don't understand is that Sven tends to place big names on team list first before any hard working players which would probably do the job better.

I was happy with England's defence, I couldn't ask for a better one but with forward & midfield players, it was a big let-down apart from Lennon or Hargreaves

Irony, Hargreaves, the one who live in Munich is the only player in English shirt that have scored the penalty so even though he lives there, he deserves his England shirt.

I'm hoping to see more aggressive style of play from England in future games because it would burn off any nervy display, England have always shown. I rather see aggessive play than aggressive foul Rooney did today!

There's no doubt that England out-played Portugal today. It seems like justice has been thrown out the window knowing Portugal are through.

Generally speaking however, England's performance throughout the tournament has been fairly ordinary at best imo.

Watching France, Italy and Germany play is a fair indication of this.

Only 2 years before the Euro cup, keep ya heads up and stay positive. Ignore the fickle media.

The blame lies squarely at the managers feet, and i dont think McLaren is the answer either.

England should have waited for Scholari, he would have came if they didnt insist on having a replacement before the world cup, theres always plently of managers going after any world cup.

He did well with Gothenburg, but since then, he hadnt exactly set the heather on fire, Lazio couldnt wait to bin him when England offered him the job.

Defoe and Beattie should have travelled, it was worth gambling on Rooney perhaps, but Owen should have stayed behind, how he could include Walcott without ever seeing the boy play seemed totally ludicrous.

The team should have been built around Gerrard, playing him in his ideal position, and then putting other players in to suit his style, or he should have put him on the right and dropped Beckham, he played there and played well most of the season at Liverpool.

Its sad to say that England were the most boring team in the final 16, there was just no attacking flair, and man for man, they should have made the final - brilliant defence, brilliant midfield, the attack let them down.

Bloody all the threads are closed! Just goes to show who the real football fans are and the louts who ruin it for the rest.
I have to say I had to get involved in some domestic disturbance with the neighbours who are Portuguese, me being Part Portuguese couldn’t let it go when some stupid English "fan" found it necessary to climb onto the neighbours roof and ripping his bricks off and throwing at the windows, he then goes out into the garden and breaks the shed down, he then ran off after went outside ***** ****head.

Not sure what everyone is getting so wound up about, they have been poor the whole tournament just like Brazil I don’t feel sorry for them, Argentina I do.

And also what the **** is wrong with people about Ronaldo, what did he do? Rooney stood on the mans nuts he deserved to be sent off, the fact that Ronaldo got involved is irrelevant. Maybe the ref didn’t see the nut crush but he deserved to go either way.

Forza Portugal!

Owen Hargreaves has made a bigger name for himself, he really should not have been on the loosing side and probably played the game of his career there.

Shame it will not be remembered for him but the Rooney Ronaldo incident. :(

was Owens 2nd great game. its funny how when you play him in position or atleast near it, he performs very well (as he does for his club!).

excellent game by him, he showed the heart of an english man wearing the 3 lions.

i hope to see a lot more of lennon in the future, he has some great pace that scares defenders!
