England: What went wrong? (serious discussion) **SPOILERS**

McLaren will just continue where Sven left off im afraid. If he thought any different of the tactics employed by Sven after the last few years incharge,he wouldn't have been the number 2 surely [dont call me Shirley]!

What credentials does he bring? Yeh i was fergusons #2,yeh i was erriksons #2.
Look's like the FA are resigned to having #2 as the best we can get.

He wont get sacked for Euro 08 as we've got a **** easy qualifying group

ENGLAND
Croatia
Russia (will be managed by Hiddink so could be dangerous)
Israel
Estonia
Macedonia
Andorra

If he cant win that group with the players we've got then he deserves to be sacked!

Fact is nothings gonna change with McClaren he'll be pandering to Beckham and co just the same as Sven all we doing is getting rid of the grossly over paid organ grinder and replacing him with the overpaid monkey.

England had no bottle to take pen again so called superstar missed from 12yards and that guy that I am talking about lamped had the most shots in the world cup but did he score ? England did not really play good football all tournament gerrard should be the next captain and david beckham should quite playing for england. And rooney should learn how to control his temperament

The team should have been built around Gerrard, playing him in his ideal position, and then putting other players in to suit his style, or he should have put him on the right and dropped Beckham, he played there and played well most of the season at Liverpool.

No, this is completely the wrong track to take. If you build a team round a player then you get completely stuffed if you lose them for whatever reason.

Sven had the right idea in that he knew what he wanted to do and how he wanted to play, but for some reason instead of picking the best players for the job he decided to pick the 'best' players and hope that they would adapt to the role.

I don't pretend to know much about football, but i personally can't see the blame being laid anywhere but at the feet of the management.

In my opinion svens job was to pick the 11 players for each match who would give the best team performance, ie complement each other which is what makes management in all sports so difficult imo, whereas he seems to have taken the approach of picking all of englands world class players and hoping they can play/gel together, which to be honest most people could manage to do.

The players just looked like they didn't know what they were supposed to be doing either, there was no structure in our attacking play, we seemed to hit more long balls than any other team i saw play, and they came to nothing, and that seemed the height of sven and his coaches tactical nous.

Either that or the players just choose to ignore the tactical instructions they get and do their own thing, which i find difficult to believe.

What went wrong?
Lack of strikers could be one culprit.
Another is cheating by Portugal.
Normally im not bothered what happens either way. Dont get me wrong, 99% of the time i'd prefer England through than whoever their playing, but if they get knocked out, im not normally bothered.
But i HATE it when someone is cheated out of a game. Whoever it is. And im just as annoyed at Portugal as many England fans.

Just to add though.
Who was it that was raving about Hargreaves before the WC, when everyone else was critising him? ;)
As i said, given playing time in his natural position, he will perform. And he did. Like i said.
All i can say is that its about time that this country realised what a talent he is, and finally starts giving him the credit he deserves.

speaking as Englishman were just not good enough and ever tournament we over hype ourselfs were going to win blah blah blah , im afraid weve been over taken as a footballing prem team

a lot of people should have known he is a good player when played in the right posistion, but there is no reason to expect sven to play him in position, hence the doubt in peoples minds imo

True.
But you're giving credit to people by asuming that they can see past their initial opinions. When it has been quite clear that they cant.

Anyway thats off topic. :)
I just wanted to add the bit on the end of my last post as a bit of a 'i told you so' moment. :p lol.

95% of the blame should lie with Sven (including Theo Walcot was stupid, including him with no intention of ever playing was moronic)

The other 5% with the british media. Big up Rooney and pile as much pressure onto the poor lads shoulders as possible and see if he crumbles. Then slate him for it.

My 2p worth

1.) We didn't play to our strengths in this tournament. We seemed to be trying to play like an Italian side or something  I know it was hot (boo-hoo) but we needed to be playing more assertively. Owen Hargrieves in the Portugal game and Joey Cole in previous games seemed to be the only ones prepared to play like the English should be playing.

2.) I've been a fan of Becks in the past and think he gets far too much stick. But he really doesn't seem bothered anymore. The only time he's looked passionate this whole tournament was when he came off injured and had to cheer the lads on from the sidelines. Where was that attitude on the pitch?

3.) Losing Owen was a huge blow. Sure, he wasn't playing great, but you're always going to miss somebody of his experience and skill.

4.) Lamps had a mare of a tournament. But we all know what he's capable of and would still be one of the first names in my team - no question at all. Same as Gerrard, who only performed slightly better.

5.) I think it's good Sven has gone. We need a rethink - on paper we had one of the best sides in the world (our midfield arguably the best) but we just didn't play anything even close to our potential. Maybe it needs an overhaul of tactics or just somebody who can give them some verbal in the dressing room - or both.

6.) Having to watch the games with American commentators and match analysts was very hard. It comes to something when even the Yanks were saying we're a mediocre side who doesn't deserve to have come this far, and Yank commentators who could clearly see what was going wrong and could have told Sven what to do. Ouch :(

7.) Rooney-Chav. What an idiot. I can't stand the guy, as talented as he is. I'm sick of seeing him mouthing off at refs like some Burberry wearing numbskull shouting at people in the local park. Unfortunately, I don't think you can drop him as he's always going to give you that edge. Let's hope he grows up and grows a brain. Maybe this will be good for him....who knows.

Myself having to watch on ESPN/ESPN2/ABC would have to agree with you. Marcello Balbao (sp?) is the worst co-commentator on the planet, although he's run very close to that position by the Irish guy they also use.

OT: Curio, Madison AL?

Our Squad selection doomed us before we got there to be honest.

Darren Bent scored 20 odd goals for Charlton last year, mainly in a 4-5-1 formation. His strength is holding up the ball on his own and creating space. Perfect for the way we played in the last couple of games

What about SWP?

But there have been some glimmers of hope for the future, and Lennon, Hargreaves and Carrick have really impressed me. So did Crouch. In fact I would go as far as saying England played better with 10 men after Roo's moment of madness.
