English League & F.A. Cup Football [19th - 24th Mar 2010] **spoilers**

Was watching it with mandarin commentary, should have seen my face when I realised it was a penalty to us!:p

Think we deserved the win, Liverpool just didn't get going. Am I the only one who bricks it everytime a ball goes anywhere near Torres in fear that Vidic will get done by him? :p

How about if Mascherano just stayed the **** away, then he wouldn't of gave the ref any option to give a penalty or even a freekick, its 10minutes into the game, one nill up, why even attempt a stupid thing like that, especially when Valencia didn't even have full control of the ball, so common enough of the bull, Mascherano decision making was plain and simply ****.

You can't blame the ref for giving that penalty, all he saw was the foul. It's the job of the assistant to help the ref, and he's obviously told him it was in the box :/ I thought Webb had an alright game, he did let things go, but it made for a better game, a stop start game would have made for an extremely boring match.

Felt for Reina though, he faced off in a penalty , against probably the hottest form striker at the moment, and stopped the guys penalty despite virtually everything him touching at the moment with any part of his body seeming to end up in the net. Great keeping. Still rate him as one of the best in the world. Dont know what they are teaching them in Spain, but with Iker Casillas and Pepe Reina they have an awesome pairing of keepers

We had a similar pen go against us against City in the Carling Cup the foul started outside of the area but Bellamy went down inside it's just a simple fact of football that when that happens no ref is going to bring play back to where the foul started

It went against us in that game and went for us today

It by no means though was the turning point in the game, we were just better
Actually, tons of refs bring it back to where it started week after week, you can generally tell because it's when the free-kick is on the line or just outside the box, and the player who is fouled is going mental. :p

I'd say by far the 'norm' is to award a free-kick on the edge, rather than a penalty.

just looked at the table and Liverpool really could be in trouble for fourth now.

You only just realised? Lol We would still be no garuntee if we did win today. I honestly cannot wait for this season to end.

We have Europa league and well imo thats it now, 4th if we get it and obv i want us will require City/Spurs/Villa all making a mess and unfortuenatly maybe one of them scews up but all three? Cant see it.

No pen. It's from where the foul was committed, or in this case, started.

From FIFA rulebook:

"If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues
holding him inside the penalty area, the referee must award a penalty kick."

No its not, it was without question a penalty, unless its a clear as day end of play type foul. IE if he hacks him down and he can't go on the foul is given straight away. If its a tug, but he's still going on its called advantage being played, he continued to foul him into the box. The advantage was given and clearly he's still being fouled, he's still holding his arm just as they pass into the box and that is the foul that was given.

As for Torres, thats why I call him the worst cheat there is, firstly I've never ever seen anyone else go up and kick the penalty spot, or any other spot for that matter on purpose, one of the worse bits of serious cheating I've seen, it wasn't spur of the moment, it wasn't in anger(he was up the other end and came back to do it) it was nothing but cheating. He should have got a straight red.

Also notice how he actually seemed to be giving the defenders a slight handful before he got his yellow card, the few times the ball got to him. Its because he simply fouls, he rams into defenders, backs in, elbows, barges, its never a simple shoulder to shoulder with him. After his yellow he didn't even go in for the challenges, he walked away and prayed it would come down. He ONLY fouls when he goes in for a challenge and when he couldn't risk it he didn't even try to challenge after that. Filthy cheat who quite literally can't play fair and doesn't even bother.

ANyway, back to the penalty, you see that all over the pitch aswell when two players are running along and one is holding back, sometimes it happens for 20 yards or more and when the foul is finally given when the player with the advantage finally is stopped from going further the freekick is ALWAYS given at the point the player is actually stopped from going on, not where the holding back first started.

It wasn't just Howard Webb's fault, the linesman should have been helping him too. The foul ended up just inside the box which is where Valencia fell over, probably why the ref gave the penalty. He probably thought it wasn't a foul/playing advantage up until the point that Valencia fell over. He had a split second to make the decision and when I first saw it I and commentators thought it was a penalty, it's only after seeing the replay 5 times that you can actually see the foul start outside the box.

He was away from Mascherano and it was a goal scoring opportunity as he would have pulled the trigger before any other player came along so deserved penalty in my opinion.

Liverpool were poor today and united the better team without even getting out of 2nd gear.

He wasn't being held inside the area though

Or are you just responding to skippi's post rather than the incident today.

Ref's bring back play when it's just a free kick, I couldn't name one occasion when one has been brought back once it's ended in the penalty area

That says it all really, its when OTHER fouls, things that stop a player instantly are on the edge but the players go down on top of each other inside the box, that the freekick is given at the point of contact for the foul. But when a foul is ongoing, you don't just pull it back to the first point of contact, you give the freekick or foul where the player is finally stopped from going on.

Like i just said, Mascherano, gave a stupid "Foul" away, 1 up, in the 10th minute of the game, what was he thinking in the first place, he possibly could have been sent off on another day, in the 10th minute......

Panalty, No penalty, ill say it again, Mascherano's decision making was ****!

and anyway, watch it again and again, he has hold of valencia's wrist inside the panalty area, Now please use the eyes god gave you.
