Essential Android Apps

One of the most annoying issues in Android land is that there are plenty of times where your keyboard will be hiding something you need to see. It may hide where you are typing, or the next text field you want to get at, or there may just be a bug and your keyboard won’t go away. there is a better way to show/hide your keyboard and it is a universal trick.

No matter where you are in Android, even if there is no reason at all to bring up the keyboard, all you have to do is long-press the menu button on your phone to toggle showing/hiding your keyboard

Media player
Currently use Coreplayer for music and videos, so would ideally like an all in one solution. If it can smoothly play 800x480 videos (encoded from 720p) it would be a huge plus.

Alarm
Currently use G-Alarm. Like having multiple alarms, volume settings, fade settings, and being able to select my own. Gentle Alarm seems to be highly rated, yes?

Not so good at gps, as I have a standalone and tend to ignore phone ones. For media player rockplayer should suit you. Reencode to 800x480 mp4 and you can use hardware accelerated mode to run smoothly, plus it'll take most formats at various speeds in software mode.

Alarm wise I use alarm clock plus, has never failed to go off plus it has a lot of options so you can set gentle wake using your own mp3, customizable snooze etc

Thanks for that.

I struggle posting on forums on my DHD as the reply bar seems to confuse the keyboard...there are black gaps, random scrolling, all sorts. Happens on every browser I've tried.

any good apps to replace the stock calander? It's not pretty at all.

I'd also like one that marks off all the UK bank holidays and important dates
You can subscribe to UK holidays in Google Calendar if you browse interesting calendars. Then they will just sync as per any other. The only other calendar I've been relatively happy with is Pure Calendar.

set up a google reader account online, add the feed, then dl newsrob from the market, its superb.
Thanks, got that on there now

Having a blast with Radiant HD atm, anyone played blue defense, looks good but not sure I want to take the plunge.

I see what you mean regards to the weapons, you have to choose one weapon and stick with it, you can upgrade others but it's pointless not using your most powerful.

They should change the system so that instead of buying individual weapons that you just buy the upgrade for weapon intensity and unlock new weapons by getting them from enemy drops exclusivley, but all weapons are always at equal level.

Can anyone spec me a good app for running/jogging?

It would be good to have GPS route tracker for the run to log the distance, time and the speed, possibly upload to a website to view all the stats etc and log history?
